Excellent playing! Btw, have you given SisterMoonshine a response yet as to joining us in our Steely Dan collaboration? Would be great to get you on board! But if not, it's cool. Just subscribed, too! LOVED your Debussy. Ever think of tackling his Arabesque #1?
Fantastic dude! I was trying to find a video of Fagen playing the Melodica and came upon this. Good job dude, wish I could play the keys like you, keep at it!
From young person to young person: Jay, your taste in music inspires confidence. You must also be a man of strong character, caustic wit, and trustworthiness. Godspeed and keep up the noble work my friend
I was driving my cab in the late nineties when I first heard the entire song...The lyrics were so compelling and ended so abruptly, it prompted me to write a novel suggesting the rest of the captain's speech was interrupted...It may never see the light of day, but it was fun! Great chops you have, guy...
Awesome song, did Heavy Metal brought anyone to this song? i had that soundtrack since i was 15 when it was re-issued on CD when the film finally came to video.
i'm a jazz/rock/blues/soul musician in london. just wanted 2 say u got good feel,u swing and funk. u hear allot of technical shit on u tube but like duke says 'it dont mean a thing if it aint got that swing. like your arrangement of wonderwall 2 but the guitar sounds forced, dont really fit. keep grooving brother. peace
Jay, this is exquisite. I have already heard this song a few hundreds of times, and will probably do that with your version as well. :) Just a correction, in the title and the description and the tags, change Fagan to Fagen. That way more people will find your song. Thanks for making this, and please make more Fagen/Dan videos!
dude, this is awesome. you did service to this one, as well as "my rival", which are my favorites you've done. for the last 5 years i've been trying to sight read so i can play dan and fagen song's. these songs hit deep. i play rhythym guitar though. Are you in a band, or do you write anything yourself?
Very nice Jay, you really seem to grasp your mu's! I've been playing your vid and tried to play the guitar part to it. Reasonably well so far. I let you know when I get it right.
Wait a minute - you ended up transcribing the entire piece by ear - WHAT!?!?! That is no small feat!! Please tell me you're pursuing a career in music!!
Jay, you have the touch. You're a natural musician who understand natively chord structure, the jazz harmony mindset and have a sense of timing beyond your years. Your taste in music is impeccable. Don's "True Companion" is one of fusion jazz's most underrated pieces ever. Aside from this song, I hope you decide to study music theory and consider composing. 5+ out of 5 stars from a fellow Jay!
The first time I heard this song I was in a theater watching a movie (which today would not recommended). Donald Fagen wrote it for the soundtrack and by memory, I realize that this was the first time I heard him. Is still leaving me breathless.
Um, no offense but Heavy Metal is one of the best cut classics of the 80's. To dis it like you just did shows a very narrow taste in art. We do have some common tastes that we *can* agree on though and this is one of them. Be open minded when it comes to art and remember its subjective but having respect for the arts is most important.
Great JOb --Something very cool about your Steely Dan/Donald Fagen Covers-- -I'm impressed and Just curious --How long you've been Singing----Your Vocals are so rich especially on the Steely --Songs!! --Love it!
Now thank you there! I put an insane amount of work into this. And you must not live in the U.S. I assume. Because it's morning here at the moment. But g'night anyway.

that's quite right on. Have you tried writing any music similar to Fagen's?
TShane0423 3 years ago
I've tried; I'm not entirely sure if I succeeded. Donald Fagan is really a brilliant songwriter though; his songs are really well structured...

Great song, and an awesome tribute, as usual. Thanks.
