I cant remember about the CI on them, i do have some manuals around. Will post what i find. The ci did change from the 91 up. Up to 548 from memory. Sadly I no longer have one.
All of them differ to ride. The 92 had a mad motor that was like a light switch and pulled 4th gear racing starts. The 96 was more torque and better ergo's. This one had a flywheel weight. Both were unmodified, just good carbs pwk 38.
The 93 went ok at first, then we put a new ignition on. WOW.
The cases are pretty much the same however the 550 barrel will not bolt straight on without mods. There is some relief work needed to get it right.
Also the 500 isnt a straight swap either from what my very good sources tell me.
The 540 is the same bore and stroke as the 550=548cc from memory. There is a freakish run ktm did with a slighty smaller cc around 538cc, these rev faster but are rare.
What is the difference between the 500 MX & 500 MXC, is it just the gearbox 4& 5 speed? Also did KTM produce a 550 stock or is it a Big Bore Kit/Bored & Stroked. Any info would be appreciated.
KTM produced the 500, 540, 550, and finally, the 440, all on the same cases. The only differneces were bore and stroke. All were stock sizes. The old MX was like the new SX, the DXC was replaced by the MXC and the EXC stayed the same. I belive the MX had no lighing coil and a close-ratio transmission.
Trivia: The 540 was the meanest one of the bunch. It is said the KTM made the 550 because not many people could ride the 540. I had a 540, my riding buddies had a 550 and a 440.
dxc 540 is the meanest? iv got one. and yea its fast. and fun, by that i mean the best damn thing ever. but its not hard to control really, so damn torquey. its all throttle control. id rather ride it in the woods than a 125 2stk. course im the only one that thinks so lol its too wild and for my buddys to pin. and too big for them to start!
Wheelying down a steep hill like that proves how fucking fast these bikes are. I had a 500 MX and that shit had some scoot to it, too.

Thanks for info, much appreciated.
Did the 440, 540 & 550 each have a 5 speed box? Also if each use the same cases, my 500 MX could be converted to 5 speed?
