since firing terry brown Rush has never been the same - Moving Pictures& permanent waves were their last great albums - geddy's infatuation with brit new wave poisoned their prog rock roots and they've never come close to the heights they reached with brown - even when the material was good over production ruined the final results - Presto and Counterparts are the only albums of theirs since M.P. that I can stand to listen to - or concert albums where you can still capture them at their best.
Real fans stick with the band regardless of what they do. They are artists, and they express their creativity differently when they are going through different phases of their life. It's cool if people don't like it, though. Everyone's allowed to have their likes and dislikes!
@savantiflag I actually agree with you, you dont have to love everything a band creates, but you should at least respect all they do if you are an actual fan. Personally, i like every single one of their albums except their first one, but i still respect its creation because they were just starting out. And as for hold your fire, i didnt like it at first, but after a few listens, it is in my top 5 rush albums. It really grows on you with multiple listens.
just rush pushing the envelope... always nice to see a band work in a different direction. but its always got that thread of class running through it. which only can be delivered by rush......
I'm a big Rush fan but I could go the rest of my life without listening to this album...I remember when it was coming out, reading that it would be a return to their earlier sound but it was just more over produced synth and wimpy distortionless guitar. Same goes for Hold Your Fire and Roll the Bones.
@fizbin321 It makes them interesting, though. It's one of the biggest things I admire about them ... the fact that their sound did change throughout the decades, and they didn't find one sound that everyone liked, and just stuck with that. They reach so many with different sounds and styles. It isn't "wimpy". Sometimes I'm just in the mood for calmer music. Working Man, 2112, Hemispheres... all of it's great... BU2B, S&A... great. But sometimes I love some synth or melodic music like this!
@fizbin321 I like this album so far, but I kinda agree, I mean, Moving Pictures, A Farewell to Kings, Hemispheres, 2112, Signals, those were all masterpieces. This one is pretty good, but the album that I'd listen to the most would most likely be Moving Pictures.
Listen to what "RUSH" says! "The more that things change,The more they stay the same"!
