If you like country style music you would probably like Helen or Tanya's version. I personally don't like country so I don't like their versions. Anyways, for those of you who are ripping on Miss M's voice. F*ck you! She has more talent than both of them. I would like to see them do a 2 hour show as good as she did. Bette is incredible. BETTE! BETTE! BETTE!
This was the 1972 B-side of Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy...Very theatrical version...It would be unfair to compare this to Tanya's, Helen's, or Shania's versions...The Devine Miss M. stands alone in this great rendition!
Slow? This isn't a dance song. The richest and most beautiful version of this song as far as I know. How can anybody miss the restrained power behind Bette Midler's performance? There is an understanding here that remains unsurpassed, pseudogospel showboating aside. If anybody's ass is getting kicked, it's the second-stringers performing it. I love Helen Reddy's version but this one strikes deepest.

All I know is I'm listening to a 1973 album and it sounds nowt like this... how to ruin a song let's follow the steps.... one, two three, Bette congrats...
Well, I've been a person who marches to my own drum. I don't like singers because they're popular--I like them because they can sing! Bette's voice is subpar in my book. Helen's voice is angelic and arguably one of the prettiest female voices in pop music history. I'll stick with the dinosaur!
Philip0460, I'm glad you love Helen and Tanya but there is no need to show such disrespect to those who prefer Bette. I don't care for popular singers either. I love singers that can convey the true meaning of a song and give you a transformative experience through their interpretation. Singing great is good, sining great with the emotion of the world behind your voice is Bette Midler.
I've said it before in re: Helen Reddy: "I am woman, hear me bitch, this stupid song has made me rich!" Helen Reddy makes me want to listen to Anne Murray
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Helen Reddy won the Grammy Award for Best Vocal Performance Pop for "I Am Woman", so yes, it did make her rich, so what? Anne Murray has a wonderful voice, as of course does Helen Reddy. But, again, Bette Midler's voice irritates me, sorry.
could you please explain to us all why if bettes voice annoys you would you watch this.Unfortunately you are obviously one of those who is a somewhat hateful person who likes to heap sh--t on others for no good reason,if you don't like don't watch simple.
Who cares that Helen Reddy's version sold a million copies? since when does popularity equals quality? Bette Midler's take on the song is the definitive version.
You know who cares that Helen Reddy's version sold a million copies? AMERICANS! It shows that they loved her take on the song by buying so many copies. If you know anything about music, Bette had to turn her single of Delta Dawn over to the B side (Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy) because Helen Reddy's version was getting rave reviews!
Again, Tanya Tucker recorded the song first as a country song. Helen Reddy recorded it thereafter as a pop song. All because someone records a song first doesn't make it their song. For example, "Respect" was first recorded by Otis Redding--but most would say it's Aretha's song. "I Heard it Through the Grapevine" was first recorded by Gladys Knight & the Pips--but most would say it's Marvin Gaye's song. "Delta Dawn" for most Americans is Helen Reddy's song!
I disagree, Reddy's may have charted higher but Tanya Tucker has lasted in the public eye and hearts of country music fan whereas as Reddy has not in her own adult/pop genre and semi-retired by the early 80's
Well, I beg to differ. Helen Reddy has a star on the Walk of Fame, starred in movies (i.e., Pete's Dragon), was the first Australian to win a Grammy etc. She still has a core group of fans who still love her. I, for one, have posted videos of some of her songs on YouTube and still love the Queen of 70's Pop!
I'm not denying that but Helen has as an amazing amount of signature songs-"Angie Baby", "You and Me Against The world" and of course "I am Woman." Those are Helen Reddy's songs alone but this song, Delta Dawn, is all Tanya's.
oh yeah, Helen Reddy is incredibly talented and able to do different genres as well.Older people expect that i've never heard of her but I grew up with next door neighbor/best friend who loved "You and Me against the world" and it was our song and when she moved away we lost touch so to hear it brings back that great childhood era.
"Then remembering will have to do, memories alone will get us through, think about the days of me and you."
It's funny you picked that song out of the 11 top 20 hits she had on the Hot 100! That was the song my mom dedicated to me. And now that she's gone, it has special significance to me as well!
To all you haters, this is Helen Reddy's song, period. So if Helen Reddy sang "Wind Beneath My Wings" (thank God she didn't, yuck), would it then become Helen's song? Delta Dawn was Number 1 on the Hot 100 and went GOLD for guess who? HELEN REDDY!
If you read my earlier posting, I admitted that Tanya Tucker recorded it first and it was a big hit on the COUNTRY charts for Tanya. HOWEVER, when Helen recorded the POP version, it went straight to Number 1 on the Hot 100 for her. So, true, if you're a COUNTRY fan, which I'm not--we don't have much COUNTRY music in New York--it's Tanya's song; but since POP music is the cross section of all kinds of music, Helen's version is the HIT version!
That's an awful lot of words to qualify the statement "This is Helen Reddys song, period".
Maybe you should put an asterisk after "period".
Also, down here in the "country", someone doing a song before someone else usually qualifies said person to claim said song as their own- at least to a degree more so than the late comer. (You'll have to forgive- I'm not from New York, so maybe I just don't understand these things)
Country music is listened to by a segment of the population. R&B is listened to by another segment...rock music another segment etc. HOWEVER, pop music is the music that crosses over to EVERY area of America and America embraces it as its own. I'm not demeaning country music, it's fine. In most of America, however, pop music is where it's at.
Jeeez, issues much? They both did an awesome version of the song, though I have to admit I don't know a thing about Helen Reddy. But she did do a good job on this song, as did Tanya Tucker. Call it even and stop talking about this.
In my original posting, I never said I didn't like Tanya's version. All I said was Tanya's was a hit on the Country charts and Helen's was a hit on the Hot 100. What I did say was that I DID NOT like Bette's version because it sounds like she's singing at a funeral!
Yeah, but to say that 'pop music is where its at' annoys me. Pop is crappy half the time but danceable the other half. But I do agree with you about Bette. She's really freaking me out here.
Helen Reddy's voice is amazing and right on pitch. Bette's is shrill at best. The people have spoken--Helen took the song to Number 1--Bette had to revert to the B side and release the Boogie Woogie Boogle Boy to finally get a top 10 single
First of all, this is Helen Reddy's song. Helen took this song to Number 1 on the Hot 100 pop chart in 1973. Secondly, Bette sings it like a funeral dirge. Then towards the end she screeches through it. Can someone PLEASE post Helen Reddy's version???
actually. technically, it's bette's song. she heard it in nashville and memorized it, then did it on johnny carson. tanya tucker then did it and released it before helen reddy.
Tanya Tucker did release it before Helen Reddy, true. Tanya's version was a big hit in the country music circuit. Tom Catalano produced a rhythm track of the song for Barbra Streisand to record because he felt a female artist could make it a pop hit. Barbra refused to record the song. Catalano gave it to Helen and the rest is history.
she's screeching because it's Bette goofin off on stage and having fun. If you heard the recorded studio version you would definitely not hear her 'screech'
this is absolute crap! i have nothing against bette midler but tanya tucker is the best and no one will ever be able to do it as well as her but nice try, no not even nice try cuz this sucked
Midler is a true American legend. This brings back such memories, I had her "Live At Last" record in 1978 and I remember my Dad askin me to play it at parties! He thought it was radical to have a record with the "F" word on it!!! Respect to the Divine Miss M
Thank God Tanya Tucker recorded this!!! Otherwise, the world would have never recognized this song. I LOVE Bette Midler, BUT....TANYA TOOK THIS SONG AND MADE IT HER OWN!!!!!!! Just like she does with every song she records!!!!It would be like Tanya recording "Wind Beneath My Wings"....it just would'nt work as well as when Bette does it! JMHO
