The castle levels are the best part of the game. They are a distinctive departure from the rest of the levels and bring a gameplay style reminiscent of screen-by-screen C64 games like Montezuma's Revenge.
I agree it was a top game, got it for the wii, but do not have the patience for it anymore, however I forgot about the power ups, when you can shoot your punchs it speeds things up dramtically
Great review mate the sega master system 2 was my first console, really enjoyed this game as a kid steel love it to this day, it def gets the second spot on my favorite games of all time right after DKC 2, and subbed.
@cyrax752 soo true. but life is always against SEGA and thats why sega company is crazy as shit right now... i mean what kind of drugs where they taking when making sonic generation... im not saying the game is bad, it is good btw.... but SEGA now is not the SEGA that i know and grew with.
No it's not a stretch, the original Super Mario Bros. was repetitive, lacked any themes, story or context, lacked any variety in gameplay or powerups, and comparing graphics, it looked like shite. Now, Super Mario Bros. 3, that kicks Alex Kidds arse, but just because the Mario franchise is popular doesn't make the original a golden game that will be forever known as the best, it's not, it's just an average platformer. Sure it was influensial, but that doesn't make it better.
Loved this review! I agree with you that Alex Kidd is better than Super Mario Bros. even though I love it, I think to unlock the continue mode you need $400.
At 07:30, you say you could'nt get out of that cavern where you found the mind reading jewel, its actually pretty straightforward to escape from there. If you walk to the right, an opening will appear and you will be able to jump out.
But I agree though, its an awesome game and like sonic was for the Mega Drive/Genesis and Super Mario was for the NES, this is the Master System's signature game. Very underrated indeed
@MysticArksRevenge Yes, things might have turned out a lot differently. What if Nintendo never made the Wii and was making games for a 7th gen Sega system?
I liked this review! You bring up valid questions, such as "when does Miracle World come into play". Nice that you put your own thing into it instead of just copying AVGN like everyone else. Nice work.
@Wrim Hey thanks for watching! There are a lot of folks on here that have their own unique take on game reviewing, most of which are better than mine!
Alex is the Better game, and a better comparison to Mario than Sonic. Until Miracle World 2, I do not recognize any Alex Kidd as being part of the same Series. Paper Mario and Mario Galaxy and New Super Mario are different series, so Shinobi World, Lost Stars, Enchanted Castle. Enchanted Castle Touched on a lot of Things in Miracle World, but Wouldn't you agree it didn't tap into the Spirit of Miracle World? Alex has Blonde Hair because I hav Blonde hair and I AM ALEX KIDD!
@vintagevideogamegeek I can understand your Coleco feeling. I used to hate the NES because SMS so obviously was the better platform for bring us closer to the Goal at hand, Bring the Arcade action home. Back then I was the Master System kid among tons of friends that had NES's. So I do hav Nostalgia, but it usually is coupled with an understanding of an aspect of NES Terribleness. So Goonies 2 is one of those where I would never want to play, but has that Terribleness I like. HAHA.
@vintagevideogamegeek HAHA! Hilarious. Yeah, NES had those select key titles like Castlevania and Contra and Metroid and Zelda... but seriously most of the time I watched my NES childhood friends become quite irritated at most of the games for NES. When I would leave their house, even TEDDY BOY or GHOST HOUSE on SMS looked good. Castlvania - I can't get passed Death, Contra isn't all that fun alone or without 30 lives, and Metroid and Zelda I never liked enough to finish, until Wii.
@stringanime Teddy Boy? Never heard of that one. My friend Dinky Dana holds the world record for Contra. He beat the thing several times over without the 30 guys code.
@vintagevideogamegeek It would take a game champion to do that in Contra. I can beat the Contra Hard Corps, I don't see why people think it is the Hardest, maybe it was just so much fun I had more motive to try Hard. As for Teddy Boy, it is the Crown Jewel of SMS Card games. It is 50 levels of fun and craziness. It's a good Arcade Port of SEGA's original. Even though it is impossible and repetitious, For some reason I like it and think of it as Alex Kidd's cousin. Jump, Shoot, Dodge, Collect.
@vintagevideogamegeek Honestly, I could have Dealt with the game better, if it had a Stage Creator like Penguinland. You have played Penguinland right, that is a good puzzle game, and coming me, that is saying something. What real made it cool for the time though, was the Level Creator with save feature.
Wow, this game looks really fun! I wish I had a Master System to play around with like when I was a kid. The motorcycle part reminded me of Adventure Island for NES when you get a skateboard and have a lot of fun for the 5 seconds you get to use it. Haha. Have a good one.
I stopped watching at :45 and picked up five copies. jk Great review as always. I'm a fan of Alex Kidd, but I'm glad that Sega made Sonic the icon for them. Alex Kidd's colors are amazing when you compare it to the NES.
@Gamester81 LOL. Yeah, Sonic succeeded where Alex failed. The problem was Sega tried to straight up copy Nintendo at first. They must have thought, "hey, they have an unattractive guy in overalls for their mascot, why can't we?"
It's nice to see an american gamer prase an 8-Bit system & game that's NOT AN NES.
Do you ever plan to review a game that is of F-Grade/Piss Poor quality? I'd quite like to see that from an extremely melo & good tempered person such as yourself.
Great review and thanks for making me feel like an idiot... after all these years I didnt know you had to pause the game to use items ha ha!!! Ive played it loads in the past too ;o)
That willteach me for not reading the manual.... cheers ;o)
As a jaundiced SMS outsider, this does look pretty neat I'll admit - pretty great for a pack in. Hewey999's hilarious playthrough of one of the sequels almost put me off the series however. But this character's ears are arguably bigger than his face and erectile tissue in his hand. I'm sure he can hear me say that - from the past. Thanks for clearing up that circuit diagram BTW. Very crisp video production too, stylish!
@futurematt5 I just watched his review of Shinobi World. I had never seen it until then. I think I may want to pick that one up, even though it doesn't look as good as Miracle World.
Great review and game. Please don't take this the wrong way but.....I think I could listen to you read a phone book or something else that doesn't mean anything and be perfectly content to hear you speak........is that gay?.......lol.........keep making vids man.
I agree with you, it's an awesome game, tried to beat it, got to a water level in the castle when you have to not touch the spikes or something, couldn't pass that.
I wrote the combo's for Rock, Paper, Scisssors so, um, i'm cheating? :P :D
@AdyShearer Here's my take on that...it's only cheating if you use the Game Genie or something like that. If you use a code that the programmers slipped into the game, it's not cheating because it's part of the game. That being said, I always try to beat a game straight through without any help. Sometimes I get stuck and seek out a walkthrough. In this case, the paper/rock/scissors thing has not real bearing on the game so I have no problem looking up the answers.
Since I don't own a Master System, I dowloaded this game on the Wii's Virtual Console after hearing so much praise for the game. For whatever reason I just could not get into it :( Perhaps if I played it on the original hardware I would like it more.
@starsoldier1 To be honest, the only one I've ever played besides this one is the Enchanted Castle on Genesis. It was many years ago before I really started collecting. I wasn't impressed with the game and ended up selling it on eBay.
Hear Hear! i could play the first level over and over again i think it's the music and there is nothing better than using that helicopter! however i always ended up crashing lol and I've just relised something , in the versions i've played alex kidd he eats a burger rather than, what is that ? thanks for an amazing review man :)
This is for sure an awesome game. Better than Super Mario Brothers though? I dunno about that lol. I completely agree about the paper, rock, scissors thing. Awesome video.
I played this game at the house of the same friend who had a ZX Spectrum. But it was built into the console, not a cartridge. He must have had the second model of Master System.
The paper rock scissors part was daft. I could never figure out whether it was meant to be a "chance" element, or a memory test, since they always made the same decisions.
I totally agree with you when you say that this is the better game compared to SMB1. Both are awesome though. One thing that Mario might do better for me are the controls though, Alex seems a bit more floaty to me. But otherwise it added so much to the platforming formula. i love this game, and i get a bit further in the game than you but i have never won it, the only thing that annoys me about the game is on the cartridge game it blanks out the burger at the end of each level, but on the consoles with it built in it has the burger. does anybody know why??
@measuringstick I think it's because the built-in versions were released over in the US and they wanted Alex to eat something they considered more "American" than a rice cake.
@vintagevideogamegeek oh that's what it is, i just thought they forgot to add it or something, also i never knew alex could fly, all these years and i never knew
