@rlui123 gnu/linux supports more devices than windos and has better applications. windows vista 7 doesnt even have a tabbed file manager or software package manager that allows you to download over 20000 programs including games. Windows is pretty much vaporware
Better apps? Yeah, the day GIMP replaces photoshop is the day linux beats windows in it's market share. And a package manager? True, windows doesn't have one, just windows update. That alone will pull up needed drivers if you just reinstalled the OS without having them backed up. And I can tell you from experience, that most of those apps for linux are cheap rip-offs of the read deal on windows. Same for the lame linux games. Need I say more...?
@codeythesilent lol yeah its going to install the device drivers for your network adapter but you cant connect to the network to do that. I dont know what makes you think everyone needs photoshop, you can already run photoshop on GNU/Linux anyway. If you look at market share for super computers, windows has like 1% . Your comment about apps is pretty dumb, look at cross platform apps, what your saying doesnt even make sense. Talking of cheap ripoffs hows the tabs on IE going
@kostashow I wish I recroded my calls with MS, I called one they gave me another one phone number, I called that and they gave me the first phone number, eventually they made me email photos of the box and CD and still after all that I cant even use the copy of XP a business paid for so they bought another one. I'd been running Kubuntu on that computer np,first I used that copy of xp for 30 days, it didnt pick up anything, audio, graphics, network. GNU/Linux is the most compatible and best power
Penguins freeze to death because they're isolated from the rest of us. I'd like an apple to eat while I'm in my warm house with windows so I can watch those retarded penguins freeze their asses off ;)
Or maybe it has something to do with the fact that market share simply means what product is servicing people out there, with windows being the top dog, and linux being dead last. It has nothing to do with the economy.
@codeythesilent Ok, the next person to tell me that the economy and the market have nothing to do with each other gets a big You Are Smart award. Accompanied by the You Know What You Are Talking About eBook as a token of our gratitude. Sorry, codeythesilent, Windows hater haters are exempt.

I almost feel bad for my bro Bill Gate... ALMOST! this video is nice and funy, but it is not objective, compiz is a nice tool, but the powerfull behind Linux is core. Anyways, nice video. Once a guy in the Subway told me that all that "stuff"of the cube was stolen from Mac by Linux l0l
Linux is made by thousands of people all over the world who work on it for free because they love doing it. Microsoft only has about 500 programmers working on their OS who do it for the money. That's why Windows has more problems.
hmm kinda one sided, im a linux user myself but from the title i kinda expected you to show the progression of windows interfaces and linux interfaces (well a select few of them since there is so many) but the windows interface was given no time compared to the linux interface.
maybe its just because i wanted a video i could point to show the two oses side by side and clearly show how much more superior liunux is. oh well... it always funny to see windows failing in demos
@MetalShreader Driver Support, and backend stability is more important than a bleeding edge UI. I'd rather have a windows 95 looking machine with awesome driver support and an awesome stability/good runtime than a good UI on an unstable OS.
@egadw ok, I don't see the big deal with your statement, it's linux. Based off UNIX, it's one of the most stable operating systems in the world. Besides, you kinda have to show the UI to see whats going on, and get n00bs interested. I see your point though.
i run ubuntu on my netbook and in all honesty, a lot of the kick ass visuals are really unnecessary...it all comes down to support, which microsoft will always lead the way in...ubuntu is great but the bugs can get more annoying than the slick interface is worth.
@ToxeCryz in fact Mac suck in opensourceware but for graphics it's thousands times better than linux ... so each one have its one specifications and constitute a way to go !
@ToxeCryz No it isnt, the consumer oriented Ubuntu is by far the most closed, ever tried installing drivers reliably on it, no? Yeah, thats because you just can't.
@ToxeCryz You do realize that the Mac operating system is partially open source, being based on BSD, right? I would say Windows is the "most closed." LEGALLY the Mac operating system is closed in the sense that other companies can't sell it on their machines. But there is a fairly large hackintosh community out there, in part because there really isn't any kind of copy protection on the OS. Many of the same components of linux are in Mac OS X. I love linux though, I use it second to my Mac.
@ToxeCryz ... we dont need only open os we need open drivers too ! And even those closed drivers that supposed to be illegal to apply to linux ! Why the hell is illegal to use what iv paid for ????
I paid for a printer for example ! Why it is illegal to use its god damned drivers on linux? and why they are not making a driver for that os? The word closed driver should not exist.
If a software guy or Manufacturer went linux they would be cut off from microsoft no directx no windows no profit. As 90 percent of the market is windows, Its it no wonder why dell sells Linux laptops that cost more, when Linux is free. If games went linux windows would be finished. Its not about how nice it looks or if gimp works but what can I do with it.
No, the problem with linux is linux. You just can't get mass market by calling stuff x3taa23, ff8e2e, K-Somewordilikedbutdoesn'tmeananythingtoanyoneelse and expect your grandmother to remember what they do.
@LeDiscret91 well if it is, it's a highly modified version of KDE... it looks realllly nice, in fact, i would so love to have a distro of ubuntu that's set up exactly like that.
i'ts "compiz fusion" a graphic addon for gnome.. i don't know if it's also for kde.. i'm not very expert.. but if i was able to install it i'm sure it will be you too.. just google for a while.. or if you are able search in a repository.. i don't remember what.. :-S
Post scriptum: i warn you.. it's nice but you have to turn on nvidia or ati drivers for the hardware acceleration..
i'm with mniaras! yes linux is full of shitty tricks and rotating 3d cubes.. nice.. but if u want to play crysis.. or if u want to modify a foto or a video with adobe cs ( don't try to say that gimp is better or equal to photoshop!) i think there's no platform worse than linux... i love macs but with window 7 microsoft did a great job!!! is beautiful, simple, compatible and it doesn't suck all yours ram like vista..
@mapios: ever tried KdenLive for videos? you should try it, you can do good edits with it.
Gimp scares people I know.
Maybe it can't do as Photoshop CS 4, but it has interesting effects and it grow faster than Adobe's one. If you really need Photoshop, use Wine and it works :)
no i've never tried this KdenLive... maybe when i posted my comment i was angry for the content of the video..i hate people that attack microsoft and i hate the "legend" of the blue screen.. i'm using windows since windows 95 and i've never seen the blue screen... nevertheless i have 2 laptops one macbook 2.4ghz (it's better than my home pc that is infinitely more powerful) and another with ubuntu (it's very fast) but photoshop via wine means no hardware acceleration and i'm an architect!
Windows 7 looks much better than KDE. W7 is more useful than Linux operating systems - I'm Linux user but I know that those systems are not better than WIndows 7. Aero is more beautiful than KDE4 or GNOME. As I said I'm Linux user but I'm a realist.
@mniaras You are not a linux user, KDE and Gnome are the graphical enviroments, the special effects shown in the video are achieved using Compiz Fusion.
You can't play Crysis and so other games on Linux because they are unnecessary forced to use private libraries from Windows. GIMP is powerful but you need to read a lot to lear how to use it at 100%. Now think about the important things in a computer system: security, office suites, Internet browsing, all platforms have that.
@mniaras So in many years as user you can't understand the difference betweem KDE, Gnome and Compiz Fusion? In addition, I dind't say anything to promote GNU/Linux, my previous reply consist in technical information, how could that be a fanboy argument? Please take your time to read again and then, if you consider it pertinent, post a reply. Greets.
@mniaras Ok, Mister experienced user, Aero contains inside itself the nice graphic effects, in the other hand, the GNU/Linux effects shown in the video are not the result of KDE or GNOME, now you tell me.
Anybody ever look at Windows 7? Notice it looks like KDE a couple years ago. Microsoft copied quite a lot from KDE and Linux. Down to the sticky notes and widgets. Well I guess the only way the can be "creative" and make a better OS is by trying to be like a better OS. I used to think Microsoft had thousands of programmers in some super building but now I'm think it's just 10 guys in some office somewhere. Instead of working, they just copy stuff and push it as if it's a new version.
I can't really say anything about OSX as the most recent Macintosh I'm familiar with is OS7 but the first time I saw Windows 7 the first thing that popped into my mind is that it looks very similar to whenever I switch over to a KDE session. Microsoft copies everything (look at Windows 3.1 and say you couldn't confuse that for Macintosh at the time) so I'm sure they'll copy Macintosh today since it's on some levels superior. I'd like to play with OSX sometime but I can't find a disk anywhere.
If this Video shows any thing it is that the Linux desktop environments have come as far in the last 3-5 years as MAC and Windows did in the last 20.
Linux is no longer playing catch up. Instead it is now the one both Apple and Microsoft are poaching from.
However like jonvanflan says Linux down fall if how fragmented its.community is. Though I not sure Google is the right fit to make it more main stream.
You failed to show any of the advanced and really beneficial features of GNU/Linux. Also you fail to point out that you are showing off the software that runs on top of the Linux kernel, you are in no way showing of the Linux kernel, that would also be boring. At least you gave credit at the end, but it's wrong to group it all as "Linux" now "GNU/Linux" is a little more justified, but it still fails to fully give credit to the authors of the software you are showing off. Linus is not one of 'em.
TheJakeDTH, just be quiet and enjoy the video...why is it that there is always someone that always has to say negative things about perfectly good things....lol....jk....seriously
Ugh. This is why Linux might not succeeed (hopefully Google can change this). It's too fragmented. It's like that movie "Reds". All the commies just argue, but most people can agree about how to be greedy. For Linux to prevail, people need to be a little less catty and more cooperative. Windows 7 is Microsoft's last shot at an OS, and I think it pretty much sucks and will have lots of bugs.
Well, by not suceed, I mean on the consumer desktop. In terms of appliances (TVs, blu-ray players, cell phones, devices) and the data center (application servers), Linux does rule all. It ain't goin' nowhere!
easy, go on google, linux, download, install it on a cd, all drivers of your pc will be automaticly installed.. etc.. i got linux 4 days ago on this pc =( and even with shity pc like mine it rocks =D ^^ but its not ment for gaming even do now with programs like "wine" it is possible to install games =D
Now, make a DWORD value named 'CrashOnCtrlScroll'. Double click on the value and set it to 1. Exit regedit and restart your computer. To cause windows to crash , simply hold the right hand alt and press the scroll lock key twice.
Microsofts representations are for marketing purpose...
If the new presented system would work perfectly, it would interest nobody, but if happens a BSOD, or something unusual, the whole world carries articles about this event...
If you think clearly, can you imagine that thousands of programmers, specialists cant put a perfectly working operating system together?
No... But if they would, they wouldn have a job after...
This is not true. Linux GUIs are very stable. I noticed problems only on systems that have RAM or GPU issues. I don't think Microsoft EVER made mature OS, since all of them, no matter how good at using Windows, require reinstallation one day. Linux boxes don't slow down. Windows does. Linux is powerful. Being long-time user of both those systems, I can say that Windows is nothing special compared to Linux.
It only looks good, i would say the linux has evolved the wrong way... After having all those tricks working for a while, the linux box starts to crawl.
Linux beats windows on security, but windows beats linux hands down on GUI and GUI Stability.
My productivity of every day tasks has greatly increased since using Arch Linux. I have not loved a piece of software so much for a long time. If only I could get Cubase 4 to rewire FL Studio through Wine. That would be the cue for me to completely switch over. For now, I dual boot.
I used to use Mint Linux. It was extremely awesome. The only problem was that I couldn't run MS Office programs on it, along with many other windows based programs. If they came out with Office (not open office) for Linux, and also Steam for Linux, I'd be using Mint right now.
I know I can just use Crossover or Wine, but it's just not the same.
Gentoo is pretty nice, but ArchLinux gets rid of all that shit, such as unneccesary deamons and unneccesary software. Plus it has the pacman package manager ^_^
I am currently trying to decide which distro to try next (I am trying to find a distro which suits me best). So, your advice might be quite helpful. Thanks for that!
ain't got portage, and got everythin compile with one cflags settings so there is no actualy any optimization coz u got both packages for intel/amd as one imagine what happend if u compile anythin with 3ddnow for intel ? wouldn't work, that's just an example, also for secure servers you got same thing, need to recompile again from sources if you want to have safe code
and don't wine about compile time ? today ? on machines with 4 cores ? ...
escellent !! Linux Rules !! I love it !! we need some more applications at the level of adobe creative suite thats all we need ! LONG LIFE THE OPEN SOURCE !!

As 90 percent of the market is windows, Its it no wonder why dell sells Linux laptops that cost more, when Linux is free. If games went linux windows would be finished. Its not about how nice it looks or if gimp works but what can I do with it.

No, the problem with linux is linux. You just can't get mass market by calling stuff x3taa23, ff8e2e, K-Somewordilikedbutdoesn'tmeananythingtoanyoneelse and expect your grandmother to remember what they do.

ilovehd831 2 years ago
@ilovehd831 I think KDE
LeDiscret91 2 years ago
@LeDiscret91 well if it is, it's a highly modified version of KDE... it looks realllly nice, in fact, i would so love to have a distro of ubuntu that's set up exactly like that.
ilovehd831 2 years ago
i'ts "compiz fusion" a graphic addon for gnome.. i don't know if it's also for kde.. i'm not very expert.. but if i was able to install it i'm sure it will be you too.. just google for a while.. or if you are able search in a repository.. i don't remember what.. :-S
Post scriptum: i warn you.. it's nice but you have to turn on nvidia or ati drivers for the hardware acceleration..
this is nice but i still loving win and mac! :D
mapiosh 2 years ago
i'm with mniaras! yes linux is full of shitty tricks and rotating 3d cubes.. nice.. but if u want to play crysis.. or if u want to modify a foto or a video with adobe cs ( don't try to say that gimp is better or equal to photoshop!) i think there's no platform worse than linux... i love macs but with window 7 microsoft did a great job!!! is beautiful, simple, compatible and it doesn't suck all yours ram like vista..
mapiosh 2 years ago
@mapios: ever tried KdenLive for videos? you should try it, you can do good edits with it.
Gimp scares people I know.
Maybe it can't do as Photoshop CS 4, but it has interesting effects and it grow faster than Adobe's one. If you really need Photoshop, use Wine and it works :)
MrShoy 2 years ago
no i've never tried this KdenLive... maybe when i posted my comment i was angry for the content of the video..i hate people that attack microsoft and i hate the "legend" of the blue screen.. i'm using windows since windows 95 and i've never seen the blue screen... nevertheless i have 2 laptops one macbook 2.4ghz (it's better than my home pc that is infinitely more powerful) and another with ubuntu (it's very fast) but photoshop via wine means no hardware acceleration and i'm an architect!
mapiosh 2 years ago
since when an architect uses photoshop...?
there are specialized programs for architects... not necessarly in linux, but photoshop...?

Windows 7 looks much better than KDE. W7 is more useful than Linux operating systems - I'm Linux user but I know that those systems are not better than WIndows 7. Aero is more beautiful than KDE4 or GNOME. As I said I'm Linux user but I'm a realist.
mniaras 2 years ago
@mniaras You are not a linux user, KDE and Gnome are the graphical enviroments, the special effects shown in the video are achieved using Compiz Fusion.
You can't play Crysis and so other games on Linux because they are unnecessary forced to use private libraries from Windows. GIMP is powerful but you need to read a lot to lear how to use it at 100%. Now think about the important things in a computer system: security, office suites, Internet browsing, all platforms have that.
MullenThomas1507 2 years ago
@MullenThomas1507 I'm a Linux, and BSD user from many years, but I'm a realist, and you are a fanboy.
mniaras 2 years ago
@mniaras So in many years as user you can't understand the difference betweem KDE, Gnome and Compiz Fusion? In addition, I dind't say anything to promote GNU/Linux, my previous reply consist in technical information, how could that be a fanboy argument? Please take your time to read again and then, if you consider it pertinent, post a reply. Greets.
MullenThomas1507 2 years ago
You should learn to read - where I wrote that I don't see the difference between KDE, GNOME and COMPIZ?????
mniaras 2 years ago

BigBananaMan 2 years ago 2
don't think they copied from KDE
win7 (look at the taskbar!) is a shitty copy of mac os x ;)
Sauer196 2 years ago

Linus is not one of 'em.

rocha57ruben 2 years ago
Ugh. This is why Linux might not succeeed (hopefully Google can change this). It's too fragmented. It's like that movie "Reds". All the commies just argue, but most people can agree about how to be greedy. For Linux to prevail, people need to be a little less catty and more cooperative. Windows 7 is Microsoft's last shot at an OS, and I think it pretty much sucks and will have lots of bugs.
jonvanflan 2 years ago
Well, by not suceed, I mean on the consumer desktop. In terms of appliances (TVs, blu-ray players, cell phones, devices) and the data center (application servers), Linux does rule all. It ain't goin' nowhere!

how to make bsod(blue screen of death) on your pc
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\i8042prt\Parameters
Now, make a DWORD value named 'CrashOnCtrlScroll'. Double click on the value and set it to 1. Exit regedit and restart your computer. To cause windows to crash , simply hold the right hand alt and press the scroll lock key twice.
gehax 2 years ago
Microsofts representations are for marketing purpose...
If the new presented system would work perfectly, it would interest nobody, but if happens a BSOD, or something unusual, the whole world carries articles about this event...
If you think clearly, can you imagine that thousands of programmers, specialists cant put a perfectly working operating system together?
No... But if they would, they wouldn have a job after...

MS has been poisoning us for decades!
athlon866 2 years ago 6
This is not true. Linux GUIs are very stable. I noticed problems only on systems that have RAM or GPU issues. I don't think Microsoft EVER made mature OS, since all of them, no matter how good at using Windows, require reinstallation one day. Linux boxes don't slow down. Windows does. Linux is powerful. Being long-time user of both those systems, I can say that Windows is nothing special compared to Linux.
ivanvajar 2 years ago 3

How would you rate Gentoo against ArchLinux?
darthirakli 2 years ago
Gentoo is pretty nice, but ArchLinux gets rid of all that shit, such as unneccesary deamons and unneccesary software. Plus it has the pacman package manager ^_^
Why?
TheLaughingMan84 2 years ago
I am currently trying to decide which distro to try next (I am trying to find a distro which suits me best). So, your advice might be quite helpful. Thanks for that!
darthirakli 2 years ago
ain't got portage, and got everythin compile with one cflags settings so there is no actualy any optimization coz u got both packages for intel/amd as one imagine what happend if u compile anythin with 3ddnow for intel ? wouldn't work, that's just an example, also for secure servers you got same thing, need to recompile again from sources if you want to have safe code
and don't wine about compile time ? today ? on machines with 4 cores ? ...
