  • @Themayseffect You can even absolute negative temperatures, which are hotter than infinity. Even wikipedia 'll back me up on it (just google "absolute negative temperatures"). Temperature is very difficult to define, and just defining as "an expression of the amount of vibration of particles" is flawed. Can you define the temperature of 1 electron? How many do you need to be able to define it? I see temperature as being an emergent parameter, caused by microscopic degrees of freedom of a system.

  • No thermal energy would mean that atoms are not being jostled around by their neighbors, distorting the space-time that keeps them apart or EMFs that let them connect. The atoms would be suspended without movement within whatever EMF that happens to surround them with nothing other than their wave functions in total darkness - which includes electrons. All electrons are equivalent so that a very quiet one is synonymous to an electron that is dancing within the sun. A wee bit counter-intuitive.

    Absolute zero means that all particles reach their ground state; the nucleus certainly has a ground state, but for say deuterium, there is only one binding energy, so it's always in its ground state. The atom itself has a ground state, and is associated to the proton - electron interaction. Being in a ground state says nothing about motion, it only means you cannot further extract energy from the system.

With refers to the movements of an atom or ground state of kinetic energy of an atom as you could say. The electrons in electric metals would move even faster because they have less space to travel between atoms. I'm bad at physics but I believe that electron can not stand still because its a wave energy sort of. And energy can not disappear only transfer?

  • Assuming absolute zero someone could be reached, molecules would break apart. The bonds required to hold atoms together (O to H in water for example) generate a very small amount of energy, or heat, thus raising the temperature slightly above absolute zero.

    So everything would degrade to individual atoms as all bonds cease to hold molecules together.

By the time galaxies formed (I might be wrong, feel free to Google it), they were probably far enough apart that the problem was just as big as it is today. Though they would've been closer, I doubt that they were closer than a few thousand/million light years.

  • @swordfish1946 no, the universe is exapanding, to quote Phil Plait "at 74.2 km/sec/Mpc". Not 100% on the speed of light vs megaparsecs, but I'm fairly sure light is travelling faster than that. To get nitty gritty, the universe expands in all directions from all points in the universe equally, not localized to any one place. So maybe overall the universe is expanding faster than the speed of light, but in the same way my hair grows faster too.

Some people (especially solid-state physicists) call it "degree kelvin", which is wrong, but nobody really cares. I have even seen "°K" as a symbol for kelvin in solid-state physics textbooks, instead of "K". So yes, it's a fairly often mistake, but not a very serious one.

  • Now that E does NOT equal MC^2, and the Higgs Boson candidate frequencies are 95% exhausted and the LHC will likely confirm no discovery of the Higgs particle, what is next? The standard model will be completely broken at this point and a replacement for Higgs will be needed... Will someone just pull more crap out of thin air and try to sell the new theory as "the way it is" or will scientists ever be able to say they are not sure but they THINK a certain theory has promising data?

    A) The crap does not come out of thin air. It must have self-consistent mathematics AND it must mathematically produce results consistent with existing observation.

    B) The Standard Model will undergo a transition to the next most likely candidate, but likely keep the name (it has done so twice already). If you want to know what's next, check wikipedia for higgsless models.

I have already looked at Higgs-less models. I was trying to get a feel for what other people think will be the most likely candidates and why.

  • Well, this covers a fair bit of ground lol I didn't see much about electrons at/near 0 K beyond Heisenberg & zero-point energy - sort of wandered of into enthusiastic astronomers trying for the nth time to explain that there was nowhere for the big bang to "happen" because it WAS everywhere as we understand it. That being the case, it is affirming, and amusing, to see the amount of agreement, as well as the differences, which they come up with. Human nature is as great a part of this series as the science.

  • Basically, if you do achieve absolute zero, you would need to put it in something. Say you put it in a box, then that box would also need to be cooled to absolute zero, so the energy won't spread, and then you'd need an even bigger box to contain that box...

  • I'm ignorant and totally has no acceptable amount of knowledge on physics. But using my "incredibly" common logic, if everything came from the Big Bang, wouldn't every light technically come from the Big Bang event? I would say no but I'd like your opinion.

    Also, if the Big Bang followed the Law of Conservation, and if you compact everything in the galaxy into one entity, how big would it be? and would it have the same mass and energy as that entity that everything started from?
