I had the honor to have Samuel Hazo himself conduct us for this piece for my county band my junior year. By the end of the piece, I was shaking like a damn crackhead... it was THAT intense. .___ .
this song really reminds me of some kind of competetive sports movie and during it they go through some hardships. but near 3:20 that part reminds me that after all they have been through they have reached the finish line. don't you think? :)
@404jipjip It was made as a tribute to the Olympic Games. The intensity of the competition and the athletes struggle, and then the happiness they feel, is exactly what it was written to express. You can see that description in the author's words here:
@404jipjip Sorry, the link wont work. If you search samuel r. hazo into Google, however, it will take you to his website, and if you go up to Grade 4, and click Olympiada in the dropdown menu, you will be able to see it.
it kinda sounds like everything's on the treble side and there's no real bass for some reason...obviously bass instruments are there but it's like when you adjust your radio and turn the treble up and bass down
This recording is tuned really sharp for some reason. I tried playing my horn along with it one day and I said, "Wow, I'm really flat!" So I whipped out my tuner and it turned out I wasn't flat at all!
@somonoi It is an absolute BLAST to play. I had the very fortunate experience of being able to play percussion on this piece while being conducted by none other than Samuel R. Hazo himself. If you ever get the chance to play this piece, I'm sure you'll love it!
2:50 to the end is just the most beautifully constructed thing, ever. I have never been so physically moved by anything like this. Cannot stop listening. Total propage to Hazo and his mad skills! :D
the Tuba part in the beginning is killer! it's a standard B Flat (in the arrangement in play it in) for about 14 measures by myself. Well, now i can hold a note for well over 25 measures. but this was in high school!
How's the timpani part for this, is it difficult? I'm trying to look for a challenging song to play. Any suggestions? : D I love this song by the way ; D
@jena012893 my concert band is doing this song this year.im on timp. the timp part is repetitive, its basically repetitive. but the pattern is syncopated at times. so its a moderate challenge in my book. no tuning changes except for bringing the drum tined to the higher G down and then glissando it back up to a high Bb leading into the Recapitulation. but u dont have to play that drum from that point on.
Epic to play and listen to but the composition itself is rather weak... and this recording's funny in that it's pitched up almost a semitone... I tried playing with it and it was way off :P
@jngrand Hal Leonard offers free downloads. Search on their website Olympiada, then click on the audio button. under the audio player, there should be a link called "link to audio file" or something. click and the download should start automatically.
The tuba part in this is amazing. The only part that i ever had a problem with this song is the first note. It's like a tied dotted half note for 16 or so measures
We played this for marching band also. it started with Hazo's Ride, and then Whitacre's Sleep, then we ended with this song. it worked FANTASTICALLY! One of our best shows. we cut the fanfare out of the beginning and made our own transition. at 0.52, the symbol rhythem there was what we used to transition from sleep and that is where we began! That was the part everyone got out of their seat for! :)
We played this as the opener for our show for marching band my freshman year. I am now a senior and this song was by far the best song we played through all 4 years. I LOVE THIS SONG!
I am in marching band, so I enjoy work like this. The various parts of this song are absolutely amazing, and transition well. Powerful song! LOVE IT! <3
This song is one of my absolute favorite pieces to play in concert band, we played this sophmore year and the ending in so intense, my other favorite song we played in band would have to be Lux Arumque
I love this song! We played it at an honor band and Mr. Hazo directed us himself. It was amazing getting to work with him, and he is awesome. It was the best performance I've ever been a part of.
