  • VG-10 is one of my favourite steel too. In my camping and hunting experience is one of the more rust resistent steel in use and keep the edge for very very long time. Few steel can do the same!

  • good lord that's an ugly knife.

  • @LWRCftw I know I have no idea what the fuss is about. I think they're hideous...

  • @Themisfitboys CPM s30v by far

  • i have one question why is there a zip tie in the spidie hole

  • @awsomeknifes It's a quick deploy "trick" to emulate the functionality of the Emerson Wave. Search on Emerson Wave or zip-tie mod and you'll find plenty of info.

  • OVER 9000 ft elevation!

  • This is stupid. Do you seriously expect a piece of steel to grow moldy with rust over night?!

  • @equitably you've obviously never left a knife outside in a wet environment, my leatherman wave was just about unusable after only 1 day left on wet grass

  • @Vudo865 True. But then, I never bought 'made in China' either, when it comes to knives.

  • @equitably fair enough

  • @equitably

I have had a D2 Benchmade get rust spots after 6 hrs, due to sweat.

  • So fucking flaming.Nuttin Fancy its a fake at it's greatest.nuttin but a cyber salesman.How Fancy !

  • whats more rust resistant vg-10 or h1?

  • @knifeguy98 H-1 Is Chemically IMPOSSIBLE to rust or corrode, nothing beats it in rust resistance.

  • Dammit nutn your gonna take a lot of money from me, cause your really getting me back into knives!

  • I don't believe you left your knife open in the snow all night. But I'm glad it didn't rust!

  • hey does anyone know the difference between VG-1 and VG-10 steel?!

  • @usmc11able Just the metallurgical content, as for performance? they are very similar.

  • Well i never plan on leaving my tenacious outside in the snow

  • excellent vid love the outdoor ones

  • @ Danthesoccer, so cut it off?

  • @knifelover21 They use some indicator, that I am not sure of, to check and see if you do that...

  • Thanks for this. I love VG-10.

  • idk if its me but my cold steel kobun in aus 8 can slice better then my endura 4 ffg vg10 i sharpen both knives equally but idk if hallow grind slices through certain materials than full flat ground or maybe im just going crazy but i seem to put a sharper edge on my kobun than my endura

  • "oh your knife is rusted? Cool!" lol

  • hey i bought a spyderco yesterday and i wonderd which blade it was i couldent find

  • vg-10 vs s30v?

  • @Themisfitboys if you know how to sharpen s30v ftw

  • @Themisfitboys I agree with Mrhalocoust, if you can sharpen it S30V is great stuff.

  • @Themisfitboys s30v

  • @Themisfitboys potato potado to me i like vg10 but some like s30v

  • my tenacious is has a good amount of rust spots on it and i haven't really used it at all. unless a cardboard box or two induces rust :P

  • LOL...He woke up crocket to ask if his knife was rusting...I would have got up and thrown snow balls at the tent.

  • Very cool video. youtube is full of crap most of the time, but this was worth watching.

  • Not sure how I missed this one! Great data point!

  • Just picked this sucker up. My knife infection is full blown. I need to be isolated.

  • It looks like you double-tented, amiright?

  • That knife is really holding up.

  • As you pointed out in an earlier Stretch2 review with VG-10 and ZDP 189,

"greatness achieved." Nice field test. Thank you.

  • I spilt some water on my endura in the middle of the night and when I opened it up it had a LOT of rust spots on it D:

  • the best part was in the end of the video you set the knife BACK in the snow

  • There's a vid on youtube where a dude put a bunch of different knives in a tub of water for over 24 hours. This was one of the knives he put in. None of them really rusted after 27 hours besides a very high carbon custom knife. He then added a ton of salt to the water and after about 5 hours he saw just a hint of discolorization on the tip of the Delica which he wiped off with his finger. The other knives had more rust or about the same. So rest assured that VG10 is very rust resistant.

  • @TaskForceSixTwoSix yes because when you put a steel underwater it doesnt rust as fast as if you put it on snow because underwater is less air to react with the water and the steel to build rust

  • @TaskForceSixTwoSix btw that was cutlerylover

  • @mrpaterson101 No, it was a Polish immigrant living in America called "Gavkoo" I think.

  • @TaskForceSixTwoSix that's a much better test then an "overnight in the snow" test.. Don't want to sound like a troll, but this video's testing is pretty useless..

  • That's a Delica, not an Endura.... Why did you set your knife down IN THE SNOW? o_O

  • My Tenacious is now rust proof since I cured it with Eezox. Amazing stuff.

  • lol i love ur dog

  • Is that marry ellen gulch in american fork canyon?

  • I'm not saying this is fake but just about 2 seconds in it sounds like you here a knife click open and being through into the snow a little bit after

  • what do you use to sharpen your knives pls get back????

  • @timberland1108 he has an video about his sharpening technique and stuff he uses.

  • @timberland1108 Edgepro Apex, but i would reccomend the spyderco sharpmaker WITH The ultra fine stones.

  • i got my delica 4, black blade, wet in rain camping and it got rust spots all over. wiped of and is fine now other than some darker black spotting, surprised nothing happened to yours.

  • is this a delica or endura

  • @MrHawaiihunter It's a delica.

  • @MrHawaiihunter which do you prefer?

  • /watch?v=jZR8QdMjgJw see how different these results are. What do you think is the reason for this?

  • hey nutn do you prefer the flat ground, the hollow ground,or the one with zdp-189 steel

  • Hey Nutn, what do you think about the ZDP-189 steel?

  • tenacious or endura 4 for an edc/tactical knife?

  • You should duracoat that zip tie ;)

  • hey um i was wondering what other knives had vg 10 steels

  • @nutnfancy you should do the leatherman c33x it is the most amazing edc knife

  • i left my victorinox climber outside the all winter by mistake. and guess what, No Rost! i dont know how to show u guys that im not lying but just trust me. probebly the best rost restistant steel i ever seen on the internet and in real life

  • holy crap that's an awesome view bud.

  • what a beautiful dog thanks of including her in the video i bet she loves hiking - all three of my dogs love to get in the mountains but Jake the Rhodesian ridge back he gets too excited and have to keep him on a leash because he wants to chase deer or skunks etc etc

cool review- good knife- great value - Peace and health to you

  • Extremely high quality. Too bad it's foreign made. Otherwise a terrific blade.

  • dumass steel doesnt rust in cold if there is no salt :DDD

  • 1:51 that's a good idea for a light in your tent

  • i would love to go up in the mountains camping i prolly will when i get my license

  • @wmc1982 I am not married if you are interested...... and I love dogs too. hahaha

  • I love the blue going to get an Endura 4 FFG and Delica 4 FFG in blue very soon..

  • does any of you guys oil you knife blades with gun oil? i messed one of gerberknife in salt water then i went home and oiled it and i looks better. so i oil all my blades, i wonder if thats good or bad.

  • @bocephus1996nein yeah has has said in one of his vids and talked about it. He uses rem oil which is fairly common. also you can use vegetable oil for kitchen knives

  • Well done Nutn... I've been checking out knives online for ages & finally found a spyderco I like. The specs said the steel was VG10 & me being a total noob had no idea if that was good or bad. Quick search on the nutnfancy video upload list & now I know. Thanks for your great efforts... much appreciated.

  • Whats with the zip-tie on the opening hole? Is it there for better purchase or something?

  • @veitchy88 Its a zip tie mod for faster deployment. Check out our friend Cr0cket20, he has a video on how to do it, titled "Spyderco Tenacious - Making your knife different". Its a great, easy mod. -- Veri

  • @nutnfancy Wow. That was fast. Cheers.

  • @nutnfancy Spyderco considers the "Zip-tie Mod" as a for of tampering with the product with the intent to damage it. Your warranty is voided if you do this. 'Modders' beware.

  • @Danthesoccer Could you show me something from spyderco saying this?

  • @Kylef7735 Actually, when I sent my Spyderco Dodo back, they saw that I had been using a zip-tie as a method for faster deployment and would not repair the spring.

  • @Danthesoccer No way.

  • @Kylef7735 That's fine, if you don't believe me, it will be your loss. I couldn't care less...

  • @Danthesoccer Did you Leave the zip tie on when you sent it in?

  • @Kylef7735 Absolutely not! I would need to be stupid to do that!

  • @Danthesoccer Im confused as to how they knew.

  • @Kylef7735 They could see the scratch marks, and slight indents it made into the steel on its edges (the width of a ziptie) and could tell. They could also see the unusual abuse to the spring that it cause.

  • @veitchy88

It's a cheap, DIY version of the waved Spydercos. Some people call it a "ghetto wave". The waved blades and the zip ties will grab the edge of your pocket and open the blade as you pull the knife out.

  • @veitchy88 veri is right but as cutlerylover calls it its "the poor man's wave" and the wave is a hook at the front of some spyderco models that opens it as you are withdrawling it from your pocket

  • @wmc1982 I'll let him know, and thanks! =) -- Veri

  • @wmc1982 He's been married like 22 years (something like that) with two children. His wife and kids are in a few of the videos.. -- Veri (Nutn's sister)

  • What Flashlight is that hanging in your tent? seen swinging from the roof at around 1:45, It looks like the Gerber Infinity Ultra that I just got and I'm curious if you use the same light. I got mine for the long battery life on a single AA cell. thanks and your videos rock dude.

  • @kgradio

To me it looks like a 4Sevens mini 123.

  • ummm yeah thats great the knife didnt rust but if you take proper care of your shit you shouldnt have any troubles with damn near any kind of knife steel

  • How is 440 stainless steel

  • you should a bug out vid

  • Leave it in a sweaty pocket in the south east after eating mexican food with a lot of jalpenos on a 105 degree July day.The acidic sweat will rust carbon pocket knives like Case or Shrade in less than 8 hours. My VG 10 Spydies wont rust quickly as Aus 8.

  • what is your verdict on the zip tie mod?

  • @edistocjw He has yet to do one, but im expecting it sometime.

  • what do you think about s90v steel?

  • @94offroad Ive never heard of s90v, s30v however, is awesome.

  • im more curious about y u had that much snow in your tent

  • @jabara83 It was the Vesti, not the actual tent.

  • @jabara83 it was outside of his tent in the rainfly enterance

  • Screw kershaw I work in a humid sweaty gross smelly ass kitchen I need something that won't rust and cut that manicial cardboard

  • I have the same sleeping mat! its grey on the back right?

  • @bfgguns Ive had plenty of knives rust in 12h from being wet while a few days might be more interesting 12h still tells a lot.

  • salt water

  • H1 FTW !!!!

  • @shanehey H1 has incredible corrosion resistance, but since it is a non martensitic, work hardened steel, it initially is incredibly soft, and will actually dent (not just roll) from heavy use. I prefer X 15 TN to H1 any day.

  • @RebelWrestler45 Yes you are right but my H1 knife has seen alot of hard use and it holds an edge decent.

  • @shanehey Unfortunately my tasman salt has seen a decent amount of use, and has not held its edge well. I still have a big divet in my blade after cutting zipties off of a bundle of metal chairs. The blade slipped, knicked the chair, and put a deep dent in the blade. However, for a light use knife to go along with fishing tackle, H1 all the way.

  • that looks more like a delica to me

  • @ClickClack717 Yea, he annotated the wrong video, but its the same materials.

  • @TheSOGDog

Yeah sorry should have said also put another knive beside it and let it rust for a week with the VG-10 knife. Then look how good VG-10 is compared to the other steel (any steel you want to compare it with). After this weak it would be interesting to which degree both knife rusted or only one...

But yeah now we know that 8CR13MoV isn't as good as VG-10 but who doesn

    t know this?

Still a good video nutn' just my opinion.

  • AUS8A is a HORRIBLE steel.

  • im falling in love with the new endura when i get the money i think im gonna buy it in all the colors except brown cause it looks bad

  • how much was it

  • whaat does the ziptie do

  • @HITMANMONSTER It catches on your pants as you pull it out of your pockets and deploys the blade.

  • @HITMANMONSTER you can hook the tab on the inside of your pants pocket and open the blade a one handed sweeping motion.

  • love that FFG

  • I don't know if 12h are enough to get a "reality check" on the steel. Try a week or better a month.

  • @bfgguns Why would you leave your blades wet for a month

  • @LordChrisHimself

Well you're maybe out there for a longer time, not just 12h. I would at least test the steel for a week to see how rust resisting it really is.

Otherwise the video is a good example, that vg-10 is rust resisting for 12h.

  • @LordChrisHimself I used to race sailboats from March to November. Constantly being sprayed all day, 5 days a week by salt water, for months on end. It would quickly ruin lesser knives. I ended up with a gerber dive knife that still needed regular maintenance. You asked why, and that is my personal example. I know its definatly not your average wear and tear situation.

  • @otter6613 Spyderco makes dedicated Salt knives which some people prefer over the Endura/Delica regardless of exposure to moisture and salt.

  • @bfgguns but 12 hours is enough time for a knife to start to rust, its happened to me

  • @bfgguns If someone is the type of person that leaves their knife out in the weather for a week or month in the weather then I doubt ur the kind of person that needs to be worrying about having a vg10 steel spyderco.

  • @crownroyal111 It's not about leaving the knife out to rust. It's about trekking in rough conditions for some time, using your knife heavily and not having the oportunity to take care of your knife properly. That what 'bfgguns' was talking about.

The nutnfancy leave in the snow test was pointless: VG10 is a stainless steel which means it will NOT rust no matter how long you leave it out in the snow. LMFAO!

  • @CavalerVlah Stainless does not mean that it will "never rust" it means it will Stain LESS, think of it as 2 words (not being a dick here it's just a very common misconception) Stainless steels, even the best, will rust eventually.

  • @lexacor My bad, you're 100% correct. Just got carried away and exagerated. Thanks for pointing it out.

  • @CavalerVlah I think your statement about stainless steel not rusting shows your experience level. Many many different steels labeled "stainless" will rust. It just depends on the level of abuse. This actually is an ok test, although not great. I have had many a tool rust when it was labeled stainless. Even a leatherman and they are very good tools!

  • @84SuperDom Wow! I know that very well when i posted my comment, i also presumed (wrongly, looking at your statement) that most people watching videos like these will know something about steels. Of course stainless steel will rust away but we're dealing with VG-10 brand which is THE ultimate knife-making stainless steel at the moment. I presume you know that they have a very low decaying rate.

So... that's why i said the test of leaving a VG-10 out in the snow overnight is pointless.

  • @crownroyal111 you can lose a knife, you also can find a knife. finding a knife in primo condition is a magical find.

  • @bfgguns It will not rust no matter how long you leave it in the snow. VG10 is a top grade stainless steel (perfected by the japs and they keep the fabrication process and the recipe under wraps until recently).

VG10 steel is the choice steel for knives atm. It has a high carbon content which gives a very good edge retention, having anti-corrosive properties and very tough.

If 'nutnfancy' had dropped me a line I would've saved him a trip up in the mountains to test how the knife fares in snow!

  • close the zip tie on the other side of the blade to get a better thumb stud.

  • I have to pic up one of these spiderco blades soon.

  • wicked scenery Nutn! I would ask where it is but I know you don't give away your spots! Always like seeing Allie the mountain dog in your vids :) Keep up the work mang

  • hey i just ordered a leatherman charge tti for $104 at ebay it hasnt come yet but is it good

  • What is that zip tie mod for?

  • Comment removed

  • @avador22 It's so it catches on your pocket and deploys the blade as you pull it out. It's pretty cool and you can do it on anything with a Spyderhole

  • @LordChrisHimself not only on a knife with spyderhole i have a normal folder knife with a thumbstud after watching this vid i was thinkin it maybe would work on a thumbstud , and it does ! the only thing is u need to carefully choose thickness on your ziptie so it fits between the stud and your knife and pull it as tight as u can , might need pliers to do that tough ... but it works and i'm happy ! :-D

  • My Spyderco Tenacious is rusting. Does anyone know how i could get rid of it??

  • @no1livez4evr Go get yourself some Noxon metal polish, that thing got all the rust off my carbon blades.

  • @Cventures where could i find it?

  • @no1livez4evr Should be able to find it at pretty much every hardware store. Should just be around the other metal polish and its only like five bucks for a bottle.

  • @Cventures ok thanks

  • @no1livez4evrtry taking it apart and pour cokeacola on it

  • @no1livez4evr try WD-40 if not go to sears & get some metal polish or if you have a grinder get a buffing wheel and buff it off

  • @Sleepinwithefishes ok thanks

  • HELP!!

Afew of my knives have small rust spots all over em, is it something i should just look over?

  • I'm not surprised at all. I had a VG-10 all steel Police (fully serrated) when I was in the Marines. When I was in SOI, (School of Infantry) we went to the field for two weeks. Police came with me. It got a lot of good use, but more importantly, it rained and was HUMID the whole time. There was not more than ONE day it did not rain. That knife stayed wet, covered in my sweat and did not rust at all. Spyderco makes great products, for sure!

  • @mr200k46 Now that's reality check!

  • I use 4-inch "cable ties" for my knives, and carefully melt the edges with a butane lighter...easier on the thumb. This treatment worked wonders for my hard to open Pika ll.

  • you're damn right nutn, this steel is fantastic, I love this steel very much, thanks for this nice vid.

  • Please tell more about the black tie (?) you have at the top of the Spydiehole, thanks.

  • Nice dog.

  • Spyderco makes great knives!

  • Looks like Nutn finally changed his outlook on Emerson Wave style opening mechanisms.

  • Dear nutnfancy. I know you think you're a good mountain/outdoorsman... and you are... but I want to see you tackle Canada :)

  • Awesome test!! is bead blasted better than black teflon coating for rust protection.

  • i like the silicon imopregnated cloths for rust prevention, keeps you from having to judge how much oil is too much. i also apply them to a sword before cutting for lubricity and to keep from getting discoloration from the medium being cut. they work pretty damn good.
