Love all Visage music and what else was huge during that scene,,,,,but i don't feel bad that Steve Strange is border line PATHETIC because I bet he was such an asshole during his popular days...whereas, robert smith and dave gahan are still going, bc they are good guys and taltented forever.....Love Visage...but they were just a bunch of pathetic fucking junkies.....fuck them...they deserve their braindead way of life.....Viva The Cure, Depeche, Echo and the Bunnymen, Moz, etc
@MarkBade Hey man, who was not a junkie in these days? I don’t if you know that Dave Gahan was close to death due to drugs in the late 90’s, he was probably more junky than Steve Strange or maybe not; does it really matter? The main thing is they were great artists from another times; artists took many drugs but they had to give them up if they want to keep on living!!
@1967nj Good spot. I believe there was a bit of "controversy" over this when it was shown (it is DEFINITELY mimed). I even recall some gig where the play back tape they were miming to failed and caught them out! Still, doesn't deter from what is probably their best track. Good to see Billy, Rusty and Midge too (sorry, khorrumg, but it's not John McGeoch - he didn't even play on the Anvil album)
This was proto type industrial if you ask me, especially the German version. Love love love that screeching guitar which I am guessing was Midge Ure as it's very Ultravoxy.
Midge Ure is the guitarist in this video. This was right around the time he was Thin Lizzy's touring guitar player, as you can tell from his image. looks nothing like he later would look in Ultravox. Billie Currie is one of the keyboard players here as well.
Miss the 80s, nobody gave a crap or took themselves seriously, you dressed up like the biggest Pratt, went out and had a good time. Now everyone's a fucking clone and music is shite.
best ever Visage track - when The Anvil album (heh!... as it was called) came out I was working in Our Price - couldn't stop me putting this on the deck... the segue between Damned Don't Cry and this track is superb. Not seen this (ahem) live performance before - great post
@LiteracyLabyrinth noooooooooooooooooooo this is SO much more solid! I think this is one of the best tracks ever from that phase of electronic music. You are, of course, entitled to your opinion... ,-)
@TrainmasterCurt Billy Currie was away from Ultravox and with Visage temporarily as John Foxx had just gone solo. He also was a part of Tubeway Army with Gary Numan briefly before returning to Ultravox when Midge Ure came on board to fill in Foxx's place. Rusty Egan was the percussion programmer for Visage
Well said man. Who gives a shit, right? Back in the 80's nobody gave a monkeys, a good song was a good song. Hell, half of my record collection is homosexual!
@death2hiphopnRnB Oddly enough, I was having a chat with a bloke last night about some of the tracks he likes. They were all Homosexuals! Who gives one! Who cares how many legs you have? One eye? 19 stomachs? If you make good music, who cares? One of my black friends used to have 2 piles of vinyl- black & red neck......WTF? Who cares, just enjoy! I am not gay, but I am disabled! Thank God I'm normal!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL!
@martynpank I don't get it, people are saying this looks gay or something? What's so gay about it? It just seems dark/futuristic to me. Is it only because the decade and the "New Romantic" associations?
@xreddragonx I don't understand why you have singled me out? I'm not homophobic! It's true that the music came from the 'Gay' scene in the late 70's, early 80's. But the New Romantics took bands like Visage, into the Main-stream. As I mentioned before, I could not care if you have 15 heads! If you make good music, I will buy it!
@martynpank What do you mean "single you out"? Yours just happened to be the most recent post mentioning the gay topic, so it's where I hit reply. I wasn't having a go at you at all. I was just simply wondering, aloud(typing-wise), what people find "gay" about the clip. Or whether they are talking specifically about the video clip being gay, or talking about New Romantics in general (for the record some of them were hetero).
@xreddragonx Some people are very quick to label! I think some people label it as, like I said, the background is from the gay scene! .........But then, how many people sing along to 'Relax' By 'FGTH'? Hey, it's all music to me! LOL! ........& you wouldn't beleive some of the 'Shit' that I like!!! LOL, Again! Take care, Bud!
@death2hiphopnRnB Are you really sure that S Strange is gay? In my opinion, he must be something like Bowie. He played with bisexuality while he has likely fucked hundreds of different girls; this is the Bowie’s mark. He must have fucked with the mysterious and extremely sophisticated 80’s girl on back vocals!!
But just about every band on that show was instructed to mime. That's just how it was, same with on TOTP. I don't know why, and it's not the band's fault, but that's just how it is...
I know that's how it WAS. I would have to say it's both the network and the bands fault. Network for thinking it was a good idea, and band for agreeing to do it. I play in a band that is by no means "anywhere" yet but we've made some ground .. I assure you i would never agree to do a miming gig, no matter how much exposure it would bring.
i can see rusty and billy but no midge, i guess that was dave on lead but i thought he was a bassest. i think visage were a free for all with pretty boy steve at the front. great times
@TheGodParticle I thought Dave Formula was on synths, not sure who it is on lead in the vid but Midge played it on the album. Anyway, whoever he is, he doesn't "mime" the lead parts very well either... Midge played lead I think cos John McGeoch wasn't able to play on this album. The lead guitar is great on this track, credit to Midge.
