  • i was doin a bit of research on RED DEAD REDEMPTION UNDEAD NIGHTMARE and it gave several refferences to deadlands can some one actuly tell me what kind of game deadlands is and what console its on cause i cant seem to find any information on it

  • Comment removed

  • @gh3rockzzV2 Are you serious!? What Console is it on!? It's a pen and paper roleplaying game! Jesus Christ, Kids these days.

  • Savage worlds is one of my fave mechanic for a RPG.

  • Hey, this was really Well done! Adding to Favorites mostly so I can 'reference' your style for inspiration if I ever break down and do something similar.

  • Funny Kurt that you say you won't use Savage Worlds for Call of Cthulhu, and yet the Call of Cthulhu adaptation to Savage Worlds has just been released. Would be interesting for you to check it out and tell us what you think. From what I understood, it is more action-packed than the traditional CoC as the PCs are stronger and can at least beat some of the horrors they meet. That is before they die horribly or go insane..

  • Kurt must have changed his mine, check us out next week.

    Cthulhu lives!.

    Rob

  • Looking forward to it!

  • This is one of the reviews that convinced me to buy it. If anyone's on the fence -- my video response is for a contest where I'm giving away a free copy of the Explorer Edition. Otherwise, I recommend the game if you're wanting a good generic system that plays fast but still has some depth and crunch.

  • This review unsold me on Savage Worlds. It may be good, but it sounds like it's not for me.

  • So I picked up Savage Worlds: Explorer's Edition yesterday and I loving this rule system! It's really simple to pick up and can't wait to try it out.

Looking forward to picking up a couple of the supplements, like Necessary Evil.

  • Not too sure why you wouldn't use this system for a Call of Cthulhuesgue game or a political game, I think it would work just fine. Other than that a nice review!

  • im playing original deadlands and from what people have been telling deadlands reloaded sucks, but i might want to check it out just to see what its like

  • It doesn't suck. Its just different. Its a lot quicker but it loses some of the flavor of the original system

  • I put off switching to Savage Worlds for my Deadlands games for nearly 6 years because I loved the flavour of the Deadlands rule system and didn't want to lose it. Now that I'm old and don't have a ton of time to prep and prepare games I gave Savage Worlds a shot and honestly I don't want to go back to the old system. SW is so much less work for me as a GM and they put enough tweaks and nods to the old system that you don't really lose much by way of flavour. And the DL:R dual system is pimp

  • Very useful information -- thanks! I can see where SW would be a fantastic pick up game; I'm not sure it would work well for many of my campaigns, which are much more socially based and less combative, but this would make for fun swashbuckling.

  • Best freaking system ever. Its so hard for me to play other systems now, I prefer to SAVAGE IT UP the FAST FURIOUS AND FUN WAY.

  • I understand what you mean. After getting familiar with the way Savage Worlds handles a lot of things (such as minions, wound levels and the Wild Die), it's hard to go back. The temptation is there to use Savage Worlds for most any campaign you want to run. Sure, I still have other "favorite" systems that I will use, but Savage Worlds is my default option when considering starting a new game.

  • This game (Savage Worlds) has really stuck on me lately. I find myself looking at it the way some people look at GURPS: as the "go-to" system I want to use for my wide range of campaign ideas. I love its underlying simplicity and the way it alleviates a lot of cumbersome bookkeeping while at the same time giving plenty of options to the players and GM. It is now squarely in my "top 3" RPGs and one of the most refreshing and satisfying games I've played in years.

  • The cool thing about the Savage Worlds system is that if you're of the mind to try before you buy, Pinnacle actually has a "test drive" version you can down load for free. That, combined with one of their "one-sheet" adventures, gives you a good idea of what the game is like. An excellent move for Pinnacle

  • Agreed. Pinnacle does an excellent job of providing player support, freebies, previews and "play-test" materials on their website. There are so many of the Savage Worlds setting books that I want to buy...if only I could afford to.

  • Savage Worlds is a great idea for people wanting a rules-light generic system. It's like having a really easy version of GURPS (in terms of flexibility, not system!). Deadlands Reloaded, in addition, is a great way to introduce new players to the great Deadlands setting. Sadly, however, as all my group would agree, once you've played orange-book Deadlands, you'll never go back.

  • Thank you for providing the final "nudge" that I needed to pick up Savage Worlds. I am really enamored with the system currently, though I've not had a chance to play it yet. I was also a fan of the original Deadlands RPG and really want to pick up Deadlands Reloaded since the Savage Worlds system seems to be a vast clean-up and streamlining of the clunky system the original Deadlands used. Thanks again!

  • $9.99 is the MSRP, for that it is a must for any game collection.

I currently run a Savage Worlds game, using the Necessary Evil supplement for the increased list of powers. It is a great game that does what it was intended for really, really, well. Not meant for complex social interaction, but then few games are. Not meant for crunchy, tactical, combat, although there is more than enough. Overall it is an amazing system.

  • yeah, deadlands is an awesome setting. the huckster is a great character, but also try out the martial arts chinese immigrant kind of character; that works really well.

Necessary evil is great too, i love being able to buy powers into a suit/ring/glove kind of thing.

Played Twilight 2000 for about 5 hours today. the post apocalyptic russian setting just works so well.

Savage worlds is the best game engine i have ever played.

  • One minor quibble - when you pull a Joker for iniative, you are able to act fast, gain a bonus to your action roll, and gain a bonus to the amount of damage you do if applicable.

You do not gain multiple actions.

  • I wasn't too happy the first time I saw the Dead Lands Reloaded book but this review has convinced me to take a closer look at the Savage World system. Thanks.

  • A very fair and balanced review. I'm a recent convert to Savage Worlds and I'm enjoying it (running a Pirates of the Spanish Main campaign and about to start playing a Deadlands Reloaded campaign). You're correct, there are some things that I don't think Savage Worlds can do, but what it aims to do (Fast! Furious! Fun!) it does extremely well.

  • Watched again... Isn't that "The Savage World of Solomon Kane" lying on the table in front of you???

  • My favorite RPG (since the original edition) and I absolutely adore Savage Worlds (and own each and every setting that has seen publication)! Thanks for covering them!

  • Thanks for the review, Kurt. I've been a long time SW freak, so it's good seeing that the word is spreading.

I have to disagree about your point that it wouldn't be the best game for pure social interaction. The game is generic, and alot of the Edges could be renamed and tweaked for the proper setting. You could do V:tM with it. But, if the work it takes to convert is more than you really need, stick with the original.

That is more of less a good conversion guideline.

  • Good review Kurt! I feel the same way about Savage Worlds. I only have a surface knowledge of Deadlands, but you do make it sound tempting.

  • I love Deadlands Reloaded. My copy of the book is signed by the creator even. I disagree that it is only suited for action though. I did a game that did have some good character interaction and some Cuthulu like stuff. Sure it is set for high action(and there was plenty of that too) but you don't really need special rules to develop a character's personality and other stuff.

  • SW is my go to system of choice. Thanks for helping get the good word out to the masses!

  • Good stuff. Ive got most of the SW stuff just not deadland. I think Rippers is my favourite.

Any chance of an A/State review?

  • Nice review Kurt.

  • Good review. I really like Savage Worlds although you're right -- it is more for action-oriented games than games with a lot of character interaction. That said, I have yet to find a generic system than fits every genre perfectly. Savage Worlds is the perfect system for pulp, like Deadlands or anything Indiana Jones related.

  • Nice review. Thanks a lot. I'll check these games out.
