Throughout the years there have been greats in pianists but I am firmly convinced there is no one like Lyle Mays and I would be surprised to see one in my lifetime ever again. He plays as if the instrument was crafted primarily for him and I am in awe of his talents and ability to create music.
Lyle Mays is a musical genius and can play with anyone. There are two videos in here with him and Alex Acuna playing together. Very cool. Monsieur Steven....you are correct. Amazing is a simple word, but does not do Lyle true justice. How about breathtaking, exquisite? How do you say....abiento? Is it until next time or later? Forgive me. Forgot how to spell it. God bless Lyle.
@JohnRoss1956 Lyle and Pat write magnificent music together. But...since I'm a piano player, Lyle holds a special place in my heart and always will. I wish I could play like him. PMG hasn't been to South Florida in quite awhile. I miss seeing them. God bless you.
WOW! I was so sad when I couldn't play my Streetdreams cassette (yes, cassette) anymore, so TGFYouTube. Have to go find the CD. Lyle Mays is amazing - should be more of his playing everywheeeeeeeeeeeere. What a great group here...
Lyle Mays is one of the best and finest keyboard/piano/musician/performers/composers of our time. I love to listen to him play. There is no one like Lyle. He's the best!!!!
Me too! I'll take a hug from him. He's awesome, genius, the wonderful man with the million dollar hands. I am so sorry I didn't practice piano like I should have. I will start again very soon. Playing is one of my loves in life. GOD BLESS YOU for posting and GOD BLESS YOU LYLE!!
Lyle is my greatest source of inspiration when I play piano, since the first time I listened him with the PMG... and later on its own discs. Real pure anthology albums, in my opinion.
Only good things and a very very long life for Lyle!
Beautiful! Some of Lyle's tunes have this elusive sort of spirit to them, whimsical, like you're not quite sure of any "core" to the song, but it buoys the spirit nonetheless.I was just listening to "Slink"-it's a perfect example of this-it constantly "slinks" away from you,but it keeps you comin' back, tryin' to dig the thing it alludes to-like it infers rather than answers anything.Great artist!
My Hero, A musician of highest spirit, a mind blowing balance between intelect and emotion, A master of Harmony and counterpoint, and a Hair that I envy.
So frustrating to have now news about him, not updates on the Pat Metheny site.

Saw Lyle in Rome.
Strangely, he was playing a Gatenwald
an Patito De Lucia was on bass (Rodby hadn't hooked up to ECM yet).
Dave Samuels was on a Sagenschulkind (fretless can).
Blew my mind. So fluid it was nearly gas. I chuckled, giggled somewhat
and spanked my wiplet.
Lyle smiled sideways with a 'typical' gusto
we all just HAD to laugh... then... the doorbell rang...
"Who?! at THIS hour whatsmore... I shifted, uncomfortably on the sofa... why was it ALWAYS this way? Lyle hadn't called to say..

The term "amazing" is to restrictive for Lyle.

Surfed in because a memory of meeting Mr. Metheny surfaced.
...and that sounds like a little Feat melody, correct me if I'm wrong. "Representing the Mambo," from the album of the same name.
Or was it the other way around. I had the little Feat CD ...???...

Thanks for this!
I agree about the vibes though - why?
Fictionary was such a great trio recording, especially "Lincoln Reviews His Notes"
Lyle doesn't need anybody else, no sax, no vibes, no guitar...just a trio please.
