WARNING: In a lot of ESCs the heatsink is hold in place against the ESC itself by the plastic wrap, so just cutting a window could cause the sink to move off or not apply enought pressure against the ESC so it would overheat (not enought heat transfered from ESC to sink). I recomend using a zip tie to keep it tight pressed after cutting the window.
Last week after a crash (not big deal, repaired and flown again :D) i saw my heatsink come out of the ESC throught that window, fixed with zip tie.
You make the best R/C videos, I am an advanced flyer and still love to soak in the info. A watt meter is a must if you fly electric! Keep the good videos coming.
Also, tell me the secret to getting the wife to go flying with you, my wife hates my planes! haha.
Although i really love getting all this helpxxx information, id rather have it served together with some longer footage and you actuall talking in front of the camera. To me it just is a little bit irritating, especially because i enjoyed the videos where you´d just got out and fly something (be it for testing or just for entertainment) so much.
Touch it to your LIPS!?!? Ya, right, and lick a flagpole in Nebraska in January.
Don't touch it to your lips, drop a dime and buy an IR Thermometer. The IR can "see" the temp of the motor inside a ducted fan, buried in a cowl, or right in a firewall.
LOL, kissing your plane after each flight is just an unnatural attraction .... To a burn!
The 90% rule is good - except for the ESC. The sensible way is to use throttle in the range between 30% and 70% if you can help it - better go full throttle than 90% (as far as the ESC is concerned, it does less work and does not get as hot since it's just switching the three phases then but doesn't have to "chop" the flow of juice for throttling back).
Sure you know that, but I think you didn't mention it in the video..
Cheers to your good advice and great flying - from Austria ;-)
You actually are supposed to have an air outlet at least 1.5 times bigger than the inlet. Ram air does not work . As a matter of fact, making your inlet bigger will reduce cooling efficiency if you do not make your outlet proportionally bigger as well.
I fly my stuff at 50% throttle or slightly over, :D
@RCSuperPowers Dude, you shouldn't be saying "Hope this is helpless" or "If you want more helpless" towards the end of your video... The word you're looking for is "Helpful" ;)
@RCSuperPowers yes. Please, no more humor. More seriousness!!!!
Dave, seriously, you're videos are super helpful. It's kind of like listening to Zeppelin, I hear something new every time. Love at the end you guys cut something in from earlier or a previous vid. Fav. . . "Oh look, birdies!" LOL
Don't change a thing, except maybe the frequency of the videos. More is mo betta!
You guys are really making this hobby so accessible to folks. Really doing a great thing.
@legoliker7517 yes, me too. I wasn't being serious. . . an earlier poster didn't like the humor evidently. Of course, if you've seen any of Dave's videos, you'll expect light hearted humor as part of their video style. Big fan of theirs.
@AndyviousTV Dude! He only says that because of his stile, you seriously gota watch his year old videos and then you will understand why Dave says things like that!!!!
Or just buy yourself 30-50 amp meter and avoid all this voodoo when you have no idea if you use 60 or 250% of the motor specification.
Divide chinese specifications by 2 and you will find everything is exact, their language is different and so are their units, simply chinese amp is some 40% smaller.
@PlatinumGordon yeah I guess I should have said Multi meter... All of the "volt" meters I have are Multi meters. I just wasn't sure if such a thing as a meter that did the math for you (not that it's hard) and displayed the watts being used in real time.
On a side note.. be carefull when cutting the plastic wrap.. some ESCs use that heatshrink plastic wrap to hold the metal cooler in place against the ESC itself and cutting the plastic wrap carelesly might make the cooler to move or not make propper contact against the ESC so it would cool actually way worst than before
@sparrowlt lol if it fell all you have to do is tape it on or put epoxy. the epoxy will melt though if you overheat it but if the epoxy melts that means ur pulling more amps from that esc then it can take
@hotblume Of course.. if its loose is easy to fix it back ... but the problem is that it could come loose without one noticing and then it can fry in flight.. so after cutting the window i would check if its fixed ok
@sparrowlt Fair point. I leave enough of the heat-shrink all the way around the edge of the heat-sink to hold it tightly in place. Just 1.5-2mm is enough.
@MegaRcmaster Indeed. Now it's stock footage from old videos with new audio (though the trademark humor is still there). I used to love RCPower's videos, maybe Dave doesn't have time to fly anymore?
One nice trick on the ESCs is , apart from cutting that cover plastic (wich not much people do weirdly) getting some PC RAM adhesive heatsinks.. and stick them to the naked ESC metal surface heatsink.. the adhesive is like thermal paste so it will conduct rather well the heat to the copper (or other metal) finned heatsink wich will have more surface to interchange the ESC heat with the sorrounding air .. of course without ventilation its pointless
Do you have any tips for sea planes? im unsure about placing the inlets, any material i could use as a swamp or similar? it would be nice to keep it dry, but cool as well.
haha love it, very true i would like to see what would hapen if someone took the radiator out of their car, ahh dear nothing more funny than when you tell your friend that he is about to blow up his esc and he ignores ya then he flies and the BEC bugs outand BANG told ya so.
Well Offcourse I run my car at 100% all the time! :O Otherwise I could have gone with a lesser car :P Ehm okee.. Informative video (Y) I've never fried any electronics on my planes.. Just servo gears
in car aerodynamics for things like track day cars best airflow is achieved by having and air vent/exit that is 4 times larger in area than the air inlet because the air get turbulent when going through the vent and won't exit properly
Dave have a look at GPU memory heatsinks they are the perfect size and sticky to attach.put one of the on your speed controller and you will never have heat problems again

90% ? I like to over power my planes, so normally I fly at about 50%.

Here's another tip: Take the metal part with ribs from of a heatsink from an old computer and stick it onto the speed control.
Here's another tip: If your motor has holes in the back and if your mounting allows, screw on a fan from a old computer.
