We had a discussion about that in an SCV meeting, the white union troops refused to sleep near the black troops so the built cabins in the site zone of the fort, along with leaving the cannons outside the fort. Afterward thepropaganda machine had drawings of the fight showing unarmed union troops in the low ground, surrounded by women and children being slaughtered by the confederate troops up on the high ground. Almost like Rueters news reports with stuff animals in bombed areas.
