Hi there, I plan on replacing the tensioner on my sister's '97 Cavalier, and I was curious id the engine mount bolts can be removed without a impact wrench?
Stupid question as obviously you would have said as such, but how similar would an 02 Sunfire be? So far all the videos you have of a Sunfire are similar across a good number of years. Any chance we're looking at the same luck here? Or just a small amount of differences?
I have a 97 Chevy Cavalier and the belt broke last night. I took the bracket off that sits next to the coolant reservoir and above the belt pulleys. When I did, the engine block dropped and shifted about 1.5 inches and I can't even muscle the block back into position to re-insert the bolts for the bracket. Is this common?
@sirmelancholia At the very beginning of the video we show you how to place a floor jack under the motor for support to prevent this from happening. You can place a floor jack under the motor to help push it up and back into position so that you can attach the bracket. The video will show you where to place the jack. Let us know how you make out. Regards, 1aauto.com
@1aauto I appreciate the reply. I had a tough time with the video because I was watching it on an iphone. It was also 9:30PM and I had just worked a 14 hour shift when I was making my one hour drive home. I honestly didn't have my head in the game. I wound up having a tow truck dispatched and had the car towed to a service center to have it fixed. I wish I would have thought of the jack idea though.......
97 sunfire 2.2. The serpentine belt isn't sitting correctly on the power steering pulley or the tensioner pulley. its sits on the lip of this pulley. Its causing belt to tear or rip off.
Can you get a video made showing how to replace the power steering rack on a pontiac sunfire gt 2001 2.4L . This one was awesome helped save me quite a bundle. Cheers. Keep up the good work
I noticed you mentioned you probably don't have to remove the engine mount to do this. So I tried doing it without removing the motor mount..and it's actually fairly easy to do.
For myself, it was very easy to remove the two bolts of the Serpentine Belt Tensioner without removing the upper engine mount. With a standard ratchet and 15mm socket you can get your hands around the sides of the mount and remove the bolts pretty easily, or at least this was the case with my 97 standard Cavalier.
Thanks A Lot! This video really helped me on my 1996 Chevy Cavalier. Being 17 and never actually working on a car except for an oil change and brakes, I did it in one hour. You guys are a great help!
I have a 98 cavalier with a 2.2L engine, on this car the idle pulley isn't the belt tensioner like on your car, there is a belt tensioner directly below the power steering pump. I have removed the engine mount bolts and have lowered the engine as it seemed to be the only way to possible get close enough to remove the tensioner, the problem I am having is that I just can't get it low enough to actually get a ratchet and socket or a open end wrench on that 15mm bolt. Any suggestions?
mine is a 2.2 , 1998 cav. , I have two pullies one stationary, one moveable, but it doesn't matter, thanks for the video, I am not here to give you a hard time, I just didn't understand what was going on...thanks for the video anyway...

@LoveMyZJ You should be able to also use a ratchet and a socket to remove them from your car.

@JinsokuMan On your 02 Sunfire the process should be fairly similar. You should only have one bolt that holds the belt tensioner in place.

@syphon901 You may want to check the alignment of all the pullyes. It sounds like one of them isn't in line with the others.

@Csabika30NY This is on the 2.2L. I am replacing the tensioner. I believe you may have the 2.4L which does have a different tensioner.

Air tools means you're cheating. ;)
Ratcheting wrenches save time too.
Some good how to's for sure.
