The last time southern rap was worth listening to was with 2Live Crew, then when Outkast and Juvenile came out it was ok even if abit commercial. Chingy was the last decent act that wasnt soooo commercial and wasnt devoid of rhyming skill. But when Nelly and all the other pop rap acts started diluting the rap game, it really got wack.

I can see the downfall of hiphop steadily increased with all the stuff post 2000, and it just snowballed from there. A real pity because it wasnt always this bad

In all fairness I dont consider very many southern rap artists as anything more than glorified commercial pop rap. And definitely none of the new skool like young jeezy, or lil wayne, or any other so called rapper of today with a young or lil at the front of their artist name is just plain wack.

The last young anything to be a good lyricist, was Young MC with his bust a move classic, which went pretty mainstream anyways. So chingy is actually a step up from here even if leaning on pop more.

Well I can see where you coming from, Im also a big follower of ol skool, Grandmaster Flash to the late Biggie n Pac saga, but I have to say alot of good 90s freestyling rap is about nothing & just spitting lyrics about nonsense. So I always took 2live with a grain of salt, hell even Cube and Ice T will throw in a sex jam rap every now and again. Anyways I like freestyle too, like Heiroglyphics, Channel Live, Das EFX, Pharcyde and many others. But newskool is overrated to me.

Yeh I know its harder to rhyme but its also harder to flow, to be in synch with the beats and allow the music to also compliment the mcee's style. Have a listen to Channel Live and KRS1 in this one. You will see what I mean by flow as well as rhyming talent.

Things have just been devolving for too long and I really have tried to get into post 2000 southern rap, which seems to have taken over hiphop in general as the major influence of today.

But even a few years ago when I was trying to dig what Ludacris was putting out it was difficult to really embrace it like so many talented artist before him. Nah man its just not speaking to me as hiphop in the past. Ah well enjoy your new school. I tried and I'll still to what i like best instead. Peace.
