  • i love the song, and just to watch him onstage hes on some good shit

  • sooooo high up there. he's flyin lol

  • rite on there honky tonker play it there honker lmao

  • Not one of his best that is for sure.

  • Not one of his best that is for sure.

  • Is that Wrecks Bell playing bass?

  • @Pickininvt

No, it is Richard Bennett. He was also associate producer on the Guitar Town album, worked on the arrangements and co-wrote some of the song. I don't think Wrecks ever worked with Steve, unless it was before his breakout in 86. They did travel in the same circles. of course.

  • @darlincommitme Richard Bennett on bass? You sure on that one? I thought it was Reno Kling on bass and Bennett on lead guitar.

  • @BluesBurner

Yeah... I think you are right, I looked up his picture and that it is definitely Reno Kling in the video with the bald head. He didn't play on the album, though, it was Bennet on 6-string bass and guitar and Emory Gordy on bass. I was making assumptions because I didn't know what he looked like. Is that Bennet on guitar? I have only seen pictures of him older with a beard, so I am not sure.

  • @BluesBurner

Just looked up some more pictures, and am pretty sure this is Mike McAdam on guitar and Kling on bass. Bennett didn't really tour with him much, I do know that.

  • @darlincommitme Yeah i think your right. I know Bennet didnt tour much, i wasnt sure who this guitarist was but yeah McAdam is right i think. But i know Kling from looks and if that aint him hes got a twin lol

  • @BluesBurner

Kling does have a distinctive look!

  • great song love the little urge its gives u jus makes u wanna pick up an ole guitar an play

  • I love that twangy guitar he uses in a lot of his misic.

  • Now I don't mean any disrespect to the man or to you guys, his fans, He oozes talent & what great music, but doesn't he look wasted up there? It's in his eyes. He kinda looks like those guys who get drunk and can't focus their eyes & aren't quite tuned in. Especially between 1:00 & 1:10 and again around 2:25. He looks like he might be pretty high and he looks like he feels like shit. Not trying to insult him , he just doesn't look so good. Anyway, just an unimportant observation.

  • @Msdistarr

No disrespect - it is pretty well known that Steve was an addict at this point in his career, so I would not be surprised. He started as a teenager and didn't get clean until 1994 when he got locked up.

  • @darlincommitme I really didn't know to much about the man. I was unaware of his addiction. You say he started as a teenager and didn't get clean until 1994. I am amazed he is still alive. He must have an angel on his shoulder. It would have been a shame to see such a talent end because of this disease. It's a horrible illness. I think it touches everbody's lives one way or another. Kudo's to him and thank you for your reply.

  • @Msdistarr

There are two biographies if you want to know more. Definitely an angel or two. I think his parents understood the disease, and were supportive as they could be. He's said if he wasn't sent to jail, he would be dead. Success made it worse, since he could afford stronger drugs. He has a few songs about addiction - he calls "Goodbye"a ninth step song, and it was the first song after he got clean. Also "Cocaine Cannot Kill My Pain," "South Nashville Blues," "Have Mercy."

  • Not a student, would not be prudent at this juncture.

  • I love the groove on this song. It just bumps along like an old Chevy on a dirt road

  • I like Copperhead road and i like Steve Earl the folk singer, BUT I really miss this guy

  • Interesting comment, had to think about it for a minute... I concur. This is the stuff that made me into a fan in the first place, although I have to say I've liked all of his stuff all along, and still do, regardless of what genre of music he's into. He does it all well.

  • Steve hocked this custom gibson in 92.

    I'm lookin for it.

    I don't even know what it's called... it's got gold roses...no pick guard from what i can tell... it's smaller than a J200... maybe a modified J?

contact me if you have information on it's where -a -bouts.

    no bullshit please.

  • don't know it's whereabouts but hope it's out there in good shape and you can get it!

  • This was filmed in 1986, after Guitar Town came out and before Exit 0 was released. The concert includes songs from both albums.

Based on Lauren St. John's biography, at this point Steve was using, but maintaining by snorting heroin and pills. Things realy started to get out of control during the Copperhead Road tour, and he started speedballing and smoking crack becuase the heroin wasn't enough anymore.

    Thank God he survived!

  • And it was 1994 when he was finally locked up and forced to get clean. He basically gave up music between late 1990 and 1994. There are some videos from occasional dates in 1991.

  • Yeah there's a cool video on here of Copperhead Road, 1991 from the Texas Connection where he's the thinnest I ever saw him. Damn shame, but glad he's back from the dark side.

  • There are also three videos here from a solo gig, I think it is at McCabes in LA, at around that time. He looks like hell, but sounds surprisingly good, considering. Search for Hometown Blues, Saturday Night and Sunday Morning (by David Olney) and Close Your Eyes. The latter is very powerful, and made me realize how much that song is about what he was going through. As you say, thank God.

  • That vid of Close Your Eyes never fails to make me weepy. To me, it's like he's singing to himself, in some awful dark place, and it makes me sad. So glad he's still with us...

  • steve earle rocks

  • Vuy this DVD -=- I promise you won't regret it . Just great stuff by the real deal...

  • I bet it was after.

  • is this before the drugs and jail, or after? Anyone? Bueller?

  • This was while he was right into the drugs. If you see the DVD of this, they take an intermission and come back and you can tell he is right stoned. He rubs his nose at least six times like he's just finished snorting a line and there is one song where he is off beat when clapping his hands.

  • This is Hillbill Highway.

  • this is great

it reminds me of simpler times

  • I was there when this was new, he looks so healthy, heroin and prison took it's toll. but the music got even better

    The Revolution Starts Now!

  • @batpappy Damn right, it starts NOW.

  • Politics aside, one of the top three song writers of the last 25 years, maybe the best since Dylan!!!

  • he's always been very opinionated....i admire him for that. he's definitely not afraid to tell you what he thinks. guess i don't have a problem with listenting to him spout off because i agree with him...lol.

  • I was just over at Amazon and they have a dvd called Steve Earle - Live from Austin, TX...its an Austin City Limits show from 1986.....17 tracks, 65 minutes.

  • LunaCat59: I have the cd you mentioned, Steve Earle - Live from Austin, Tx...It's awesome! My favs. are "The Art of Zen Mandolin" Copenhagen, 1997 (2 cd set), also "Steve Earle & the Bluegrass Dukes, Tonder Music Festival, Denmark" 8/26/06, Steve Earle, Townes Van Zandt & Guy Clark - Together at the Bluebird Cafe, 2001.

  • Twang it out Steve! I Love it!

  • I saw this years ago. I've been looking for a copy of this Austin City Limits featuring Steve Earle for years. No mention of it on the Austin City Limits website. Does anyone have a copy? I'd pay good money for a copy.

    Thank you.

  • I wish they'd put it out on DVD also

  • re SE's politics - he calls it like he done seen it, more power to him for speaking the truth. No one's ever gonna mistake him for an amoral bought-and-paid-for opportunist piece of dreck like Alan Jackson

  • I like Steve Earle and all, but why drag Alan Jackson into here? He's a great musician as well, no need to just get pissed and single somebody out.

  • @crazymofquebec steves thinks he s a sellout

  • @phildirt3

Are you sure Steve called Alan a sell-out? I think the commenter you were responding to did, but I know Steve sang at an ASCAP event honoring Jackson last fall. I think they probably respect each other. And as Nashville goes, Jackson isn't so bad.

  • @darlincommitme thats sort of what i got out of what he said but not only dont i think jackson s a sellout i dont know if thats what steve meant

  • So much for liberal tolerance. Has it occurred to you that Alan Jackson might just really believe what he says, and be successful because he is really good at what he does?

  • why is it all intense artists looks like they just got out of jail

  • I find it heartening that the debate over SE's politics is one of the more balanced and polite I've seen on YouTube. I saw him at a Blues & Roots fest over in Australia some 10 years back. Some of the crew there (Michelle Shocked, Iris DeMent)made Steve look like a shrinking violet on the political front. Country & Folk have a strong tradition of protest, but maybe lowbridgehight has a point, good strong lyrics can say a lot on their own without extra sermonizing, & SE sure can write good lyrics

  • Now y'all this is a foot-tapping song... !

  • I LOVE THIS SONG! Probably my favourite he does.

  • The drummer is Harry Stinson- he's sung bgv's on at least dozens, if not hundreds of records...

  • You know, from certain angles Steve Earl kind of resembles Steven King, especially at the beginning. Love his music.

  • hey y'all.. shut the fuck up and just rockout. jesus hebrew christ. godbless.

  • The reply showing below is to LOWBRIDGEHIT's comment on page 2.

  • It just don't get any better than this !!!!!!! Thanks

  • That drummer can flat sing some backup harmony!

  • i love this video! i have the entire Austin City Limits show that this is from on DVD, it's incredible...i've nearly worn it out...i love Steve Earle still, but wow, he was so powerful back then and what a doll....this video was from the 1986 show, i think...

  • Geez, this must have been from the late 80s...way before prison. He was so beautiful.

  • This is such a cool song because it actually deals with a real, historical cultural phenomnenon--the migration of Appalacian miners northward, specifically to Detroit.

  • Hell yeah!!!

  • i have this DVD, the whole show, incredible stuff, gorgeous guy, beautiful music......

  • Ditto. Get it -- some of the best bucks you well ever spend.

  • oh, man, does this make me homesick for Texas and Austin City Limits!!! i never got to see Steve there, but did see Jerry Jeff Walker a couple of times....i live in MN now, and sure wish Steve would make it back this far into Flyover Land.....incredible music by an incredible musician! keep rockin' steve!!!

  • Shut up and listen for a change. Thank you ladies.

  • hey greentie, we have to talk about steve earle and his beautiful face....sorry...that's just what girls do...

  • well one thing we can agree on is that his character makeup has created some damn good music. liberal, ad hominem or not, hes got the right and so do u and i to say what we want. F the FCC and the F'n taliban both. thx

  • You are a moron for sure- you're saying that he can't speak his mind because he served time for drugs! Bush and Cheney's immoral policies are infinitely more dangerous.

  • lets just say that if u want to listen to some of the most compelling, creative, insightful music that SE is the man. but hes not the guy to count on to fight the taliban. SE said it himself about his role mode townes van zandt..a great musician, but a bad role model. dont worry bout Bush/Cheney. christmas in washington is coming soon!

  • i love steves music...but you have to wonder how an ex con has any right telling anyone what to think about their govt or the Iraq war.just play and keep your yap shut and stay out of jail

  • Probably because an ex con knows a lot of things you don't. Like the prisoners tortured and killed in Abu Graib knew that you dont...

  • yah i heard about that & agent orange & dresden fire bombing in WW2...but what does a guy singing hillbilly hiway got to so with it? steves the best at what he does, but he is using his anti war retoric to promote his music & make himself $. "i make an embarrasing amount of $ for a border line communist" quote SE

  • Why does someone's *former* drug use and legal problems make them incompetant in your eyes to talk about what's going on in the world now? If he were still on drugs I could kind of see how a narrow-minded individual might hold his opinion as suspect. But we've all been in trouble of some kind at some point in our lives. And if you haven't it's cause you ain't lived long enough yet. Just listen and keep your mouth shut and you might learn something.

  • Well im 40, so maybe in the back half I can "learn" something & your correct, theres always lots more to learn, but as much as I love SE music, his opinions make him $ right now. he's found his niche. God bless him...I just dont agree with him. sorry it hurt your feelings

  • His opinions aren't a great way to make bucks just now. More to the point: Steve has never, ever had that calculus in mind for anything he's ever said. (And less to the point: did time in Iraq myself BTW -- you?).

That said, no hard feelings back at ya'. Great artist, great authenticity. God bless him -- wish all Texans came in this package. :-)

  • Haha! If Steve Earle is trying to make money out of his opinions than that sure ain't the easiest way... Of course, he earns from the music he makes but what's so morally incorrect with that? And you don't have to agree with everything he says. I know I don't but so what? Music is only entertainment and a great entertainer is what Steve Earle is. He's not a politician, remember that.

  • Hey, I shelled out and saw him perform 4 weeks ago. He still beeked off and I still paid. Problem is that he is the best song writer out there and Im hooked.

  • Steve is not in jail anymore & since he's a U.S. citizen, that gives him the freedom to say what he feels & write music too! See how that works? BTW:Don't tell someone to "shut their yap", that's rude! Don't be a hater!

  • lol i think you just contradicted yourself lol( ie...that gives him the freedom to say what he feels) lol oh man am i in trouble now

  • need to see this live

  • I have my fav Steve Earle songs too..."My Old Friend The Blues", "Someday", "Little Rock n' Roller". I highly recommend, if you can get hold of Steve Earle & The Bluegrass Dukes' cd recorded in 2006 in Denmark at the "Tonder Music Festival" (2 cd set) It's pretty awesome. Can't ask for much better.

  • Legend.

  • Another one of my favorites. But I've only got about a hundred favorites from SE.

  • This was back in the CCKMP days, strugglin with the demons. Have seen him many times, and love him. Until hegets rolling on his death penalty/anti-government rant. One helluva music and song writer, one of the best.

  • goodbye's all we got left

  • harry stinson on drums and singin' high and pretty

  • Good stuff...thanks for posting this video...glad to see more Steve Earle

  • i love this song... i have been a steve earle since he came out with guitar town.. wich is where this one is from.. steve earle, will always be one of the best outlaws there ever was.. s.e. rules 4/life

  • that's Mike McAdams on twang guitar

  • This is from September of 1986. Its not post Copperhead Road, it's post Guitar Town - his first record.

  • Must have been in the mid-80's. Austin City Limits and

Steve Earle-- doesn't get much better than that.

  • I like this since I first saw it here on YouTube. May Steve Earle rock on!

  • classic. Post copperhead road
