Great tutorial thanks. This really helped me fix my mower which was revving up and then slowing down. I had tried cleaning the air filter and changing the spark plug but on opening the carby it was clear there was a lot dirt in the bottom. Thanks again!
Did everything in the video except replace the gasket and diaphram and the engine still runs high to low rpm or the term i learned is galoping what else can i do.
@thuntee73 I have a Briggs and Stratton 4 HP mower.I have had it since 1996.I has never missed a beat.Always been reliable.I just changed the spark plug. It was due, it was the original one.lol
Thank you for this video! Was having problems with mine and people kept suggesting that it may be a carburetor problem. I had no idea how easy this could be until finding your vid. Mower now runs like a champ!
my briggs 3.5 classic on the Chinese deck start runs then after about 15 seconds or so it chuggs then a bit of blue smoke then runs good then chuggs then blue smoke then runs good then it just runs all smokey and lean? is that a bad diaphragm ?
What is wrong with my TrimTech Briggs & Statton lawn mower? When I tried to start it didn't want to, so I pressed the prime button. Now the petrol just pours out of the prime button. What to do???
I bought a mower brand new with this/similar engine. I used it once with no problems, I let it sit for about 3 weeks, and now it will start and run for about 1 second then shut off. It will stay running if i pump the primer during that time, but shuts off instantly when i don't. The gas was new then. Does this just sound defective?
I followed the instructions to a "T" but the mower will run for maybe 2 or 3 seconds and dies. I don't know if I need to change the gas or oil maybe?? That is the only thing I can think of. There was a little bit of dirt in the carb, so I cleaned it really good. It had new gas that was already in there so I didn't think I should have to change it. Any ideas what else it could be?
Why don't you just spend the $3 for the new kit that comes with new gasket, new diaphragm and screen. It will last longer and you know it will run when your done.
@donyboy73 I don't know if you said this in any of your videos but the gasket and diaphragm have to be put in the right order or it won't start or prime. Yes I did it. Anyway that is a nice piece of info for new kit people to know. If it don't start flip them.
Just want to say thanks for taking the time to do this video. I had a mulcher with the same type engine. I started it the other day and it ran for about two passes. The ground was wet and I stopped to clear some wet grass. When i went to restart it....nothing. i tried pulling it for like and hour. Then i went and changed the gas to fresh. (just pouring it out as i was mad, not removing the tank). Just got a new plug and sprayed into the carb. And nothing. Im gonna try your method and see.
Hey i found a briggs and stratton in somebodies garbage yesterday and there is oil dripping out of the gas tank area and it will not let me pull to start it and i tried spinning the blade and it makes a sucking noise anyone can please help me i really need the motor :D
@donyboy73 Thanks well i scrapt the motor no use i took it off the mower tried what u said dint work just threw it out another will show one day thanks for your help :P
I can't thank you enough for this one Donyboy73. I was going to go buy a new lawn mower this morning and I watched this and I got mine running like new for $1.99.
I did this at 9:00 pm, waiting till morning to add new gas and try it out to see if it runs better. I just want to know if it's safe to add vehicle fuel injector / carb cleaner to a lawnmower?
I am a 35 year old woman who never worked on a lawnmower before, but I've always been the kind to try to fix things myself. I watched your video and it looked pretty easy, so I took out my tools and got to work. I took apart the carb and cleaned it out. It was pretty dirty on the outside, I really hope none of the dirt got back inside. I was able to get most of the gas out, but not all of it. When I put new gas, can I add some fuel inj / carb cleaner for cars to the lawnmower gas tank?
Thanks for the video. Good tutorial. I tried all this. When taking off the spring on the throttle, a wire came undone. I have no spark at all now. Is this wire just a grounding wire for the spark plug assembly?
Just wanted to thank you for the video. I did what you said and now my mower runs like new! I don't know ANYTHING about motors and was able to fix it following the vid. If I can do it.... ANYBODY can do it. SOOOOO THANKS!
@grayfury100 Mine has the same issue. I cleaned it like @donboy showed and it ran fine for a little while, now its doing the same thing. Makes me wonder if I have bad gas (it was fresh and treated with startron) or the springs are shot?
@donyboy73 What i did is put half a bottle ( 18 oz ), i removed the air filter and poured oil thinking that the oil goes there . before i did this mistake the mower would not start , it had gas , so i thought maybe it needs oil . now i cant even pull the rope to start . The lawn mower is just 1yr old . and i know nothing about them or how they work .
@MrParmigianoReggiano you might want to drain the oil from the mower and remover the spark plug and pull it over so the oil goes out the hole. make sure the plug wire is not facing the hole when u pull it over
Thank you very much for this! I looked all over for a video for my particular carb, and almost gave up. Then I found this clip. It is exactly like mine. My problem was the mower started and ran fine... for a few seconds. Then it needed constant priming just to keep running. If you stopped pumping that little red ball, she sputtered to a stop. You could tell it just wasn't sucking gas very well. And just like you show here, the screens were all clogged up. As soon as it was cleaned, it ran great!
this was help ful but i still have a problem. i started my mower satrted up slaow then died. can any one help? plus the spark is very oily there and ideas y that y its so oily?
Carb cleaned, gasket just changed, spark plug changed and getting spark, fuel fresh but this little baby ain't just starting. I am about to piss on it and throw it away.
A heartfelt thanks for excellent instruction. My 4HP Briggs engine on my push mower runs like a jeweled watch. A new diaphragm and a few minutes saved me a ton of money.
I have never worked on a lawnmower until today. After viewing this video, I went to Lowes and purchased carb cleaner, gasket and diaphragm for 7 dollars. Followed the steps and now my mower is singing a nice ditty. Thanks donboy73. You saved me money plus it was fun. Nice job! Wear safety glasses though. I'm glad I had mine on when I sprayed carb cleaner in one of the holes and it came shooting back at me through another one. I had a lot of white waxy deposit like other posts.
This guy's video saved me money.I called a lawnmower repair shop explained what was wrong,he said it would $180.00dollars.for a new one is 170.00.I did every thing on this video. there was ton's of wax build up ?I guess they put some kind of additive in the gas. my mower is working great now I am going to do this every fall.this guy is great i have watched other video's of this this was the best .thank's man you rock.
Thanx for this video. Im wondering why todays mowers are sooo tempermental. I had a kmart mower in the 70's i used into the 90's. Never did anything to it except change oil and air filter. Beat the hell out of it , used old gas , dirty gas , dull blades etc. The thing would just run and run and run. Todays mowers ,both the B&S and Tuchunseh engines are really finicky. Seem like if one grain of salt sized piece of debris gets into the fuel tank its "take the whole thing apart time" again ?
I have been working on small engines with my father since I was six and now I run my own small engine repair shop for just over 22 years now. I have been watching your videos for a while now and I have to say, you do an excellent job at explaining things. Great work keep it up.
Did everything here, including change the spark plug. Motor is not even getting any juice, no exhaust from the cable pull to start it. How easy should air flow when you blow into the carburetor when you blow on it. I had to blow hard on it.
Good point on not letting carb cleaner sit on the diaphragm. If the chemical is let sit, it will curl the diaphragm and make it difficult to keep flat for reassembly.
having found no high end jet , i thought I was loosing out with a stuffed `input' tube, then low and behold what lays below ! thanks to this video. cheerycheers.
Thanks a bunch for helping me out. I don't have a lot of "mechanical ability", but your step by step instructions made cleaning my carb easy. My mower runs much better now, and I have you to thank. I certainly appreciate your help!
...Forgot to mention that I think the engine is a 3.75 hp "Sprint or Classic"?? Can't remember but it looks like the same identical design as this one.
@donyboy73 Thanks very much for your great videos. You saved me alot of time money & hassle. Have recommended you to lots of folk & am now a ardent follower, good on ya!!!
@donyboy73 Ok, i took it all apart and cleaned it. Put it back together with the OLD diaphragm. Still not running right at all!! Acts like it's flooding out, but the engine's not dying... On the part of the diaphragm where the spring pushes against, was hard. I could push on it one way and the diaphragm would stay in that spot. Push it the other way and it does the same thing... I think the diaphragm needs changing.... Carb was pretty dirty.... Do you recommend using aftermarket diaphragms??
@donyboy73 Ok, thank you. That's what I'll do then... Is there any reason why you say to use OEM diaphragms? Just curious... Also, do you think that's what the problem is from what I described?
@donyboy73 Well, I got the new diaphragm in there ant it STILL acts like its flooging out when not under load! It acts like the choke is partially on or something like that... Maybe the carburetor is still dirty? Maybe I need to soak it in carb cleaner over night?? I'm frustrated because this is supposed to be a very easy task to do...
@donyboy73 Ok, got the thing running PERFECT now!! I took the carb back off and cleaned it with another can of carb cleaner. I also put a couple cap fulls of "Berryman B-12" carb./ injector cleaner in the fuel tank. I cleaned the air filter and changed the engine oil too... It's been a Long time since my little 3.75 hp Briggs & Stratton ran this good. I Love it!! It don't burn/ use a single drop of oil and I've had this thing since 2003 or 2004. I've definately got my money out of it.
I have this same type design engine on my Briggs & Stratton Speed Clean 2000 PSI Pressure Washer. It'll be 7 years old in April of this year, still running strong! I have kept the oil changed and the air filter cleaned... Only problem it has is it's "surging" at engine idle. Runs fine at full throttle and when it's under a load. Do you know what the problem may be?? I've watched all your Q & A videos, along with others! PLEASE KEEP THEM COMING!! I am learning a LOT of things from you... THANKS!!
hi, these videos are GREAT, thank you very much. I have this classic 35 in my lawnmower, you can tell me if it has points or CDI?? The engine still not running well although changed diaphragm and primer bulb.
thanks for the great clip. I'm a middle aged mother and after viewing this clip, I'm confident to give mower repairs a go. I'm going to take his advise and take pics so I put it back together right.
Thank you, Dony. Very clear, precise directions, very easy to follow. You make the best videos on lawnmower repair. I did not know anything before, now I feel like an expert :-) Plus, I was about to toss my lawnmower, now it runs like brand new--all thanks to you!
That's the kind of carb I have on my 84 briggs I gave it a good cleaning and it works good now I have to put the recoil spring back in and figure what the horrible screaming noise is on the mower
so i found myself walkin to skool the otherday and i saw a lawn mower in the grabage so i ran it home then ran back to skool. (im 14) i didnt check to see if it was junk or not. but when i got home i was checkin it over and nothin was rly wrong with it. it seems to be the blade got caught in the lip underneth. and i fixed that. and took the carb off and cleaned the gas tank. now i havent checked to see if she runs yet. but iv contemplated making a vid. comment and tell me what u think.
@donyboy73 k'so i was workin on it last night. and i think its eff,ed. but im gunna try and do a vid anyway. and maby u can tell me whats goin on here.
Those tabs on the gaskets are valves not pumps. But with those engines you really have to replace that diaphragm atleast once every two years if you use the engine allot.
hey don, could you do a video in future about inserting a piston pint circlip? I am rebuilding one of these engines and I have lots of frustration with the circlip. I don't know anything about the direction and proper installation of the circlip. thanks!
Thank you thank you thank you. I am not the mechanical type, and this type of maintenance is difficult to unserstand by just reading something or talking with somebody. This video is excellent work. Very clear step by step instructions that are clearly illustrated. They should package a dvd of this with every lawmower! Everyone with a briggs and stratton mower should watch this.
@dreghead ur welcome man, make sure to subscribe and tell ur friends about my videos. i have a video coming soon on how to replace the primer bulb on thia lawnmower
Thank you for the video - very good quality and clear description. I just cleaned my carb on a 4.0hp. It started up fine only it seems to be running at a very, very high idle - and the idle control does not work. I only unhooked the one arm to the linkage as in your video and I "think" it's back the way it was unless something feel out or disconnected. Is there anything else that could cause this problem? Note: The diaphragm was separating and not in great shape - could this be the problem?
@donyboy73 Thanks for the quick reply. So I was starting to put in the new diaphragm when I noticed that the linkage was not properly inserted into the arm (the other end that is connected to the throttle control). I pushed it in all the way, fired it up, and it works perfectly - including the throttle. Now I'm scared to change the diaphragm in case I bugger something else up :) Thanks again for the great video - probably saved me $100 at the shop.
Just getting ready to tear into one of these,,,,,I dislike the carbs, but that said they do work. Just not that use to the carb on the gas tank I guess Your vids are great thanks a lot!
I have one sitting outside made by rally been siting for 3 years after the safety cable broke and could not find a replacement . Now I am going to clean out carb and sell
it for parts. It is a Rally 22" not self propelled .
Don, I just repaired a 1986 mower with diaphragm -autochoke. This video was perfect! I had to rebuild the starter ratchet, restring the starter, retorque head, clean out fuel system, rebuild carb, etc. It had sad been sitting for years. It started one first pull. Thanks for the timely lesson.
i actually love doing these ones, they are so easy to fix.. you can get a kit that comes with the screen, a new spring, diaphragm and gasket, dont know the kit number off hand, but there like 12$

Did everything here, including change the spark plug. Motor is not even getting any juice, no exhaust from the cable pull to start it. How easy should air flow when you blow into the carburetor when you blow on it. I had to blow hard on it.
lamrof 10 months ago
Good point on not letting carb cleaner sit on the diaphragm. If the chemical is let sit, it will curl the diaphragm and make it difficult to keep flat for reassembly.

@231MasseyFerguson sounds like the carb is dirty and possibly the diaphragm needs to be replaced

231MasseyFerguson 10 months ago
@231MasseyFerguson best to use OEM diaphragms
donyboy73 10 months ago
@donyboy73 Ok, thank you. That's what I'll do then... Is there any reason why you say to use OEM diaphragms? Just curious... Also, do you think that's what the problem is from what I described?
231MasseyFerguson 10 months ago
@231MasseyFerguson they are better quality and it could possibly be the problem of ur machine
donyboy73 10 months ago
@donyboy73 Well, I got the new diaphragm in there ant it STILL acts like its flooging out when not under load! It acts like the choke is partially on or something like that... Maybe the carburetor is still dirty? Maybe I need to soak it in carb cleaner over night?? I'm frustrated because this is supposed to be a very easy task to do...
231MasseyFerguson 9 months ago
@donyboy73 Ok, got the thing running PERFECT now!! I took the carb back off and cleaned it with another can of carb cleaner. I also put a couple cap fulls of "Berryman B-12" carb./ injector cleaner in the fuel tank. I cleaned the air filter and changed the engine oil too... It's been a Long time since my little 3.75 hp Briggs & Stratton ran this good. I Love it!! It don't burn/ use a single drop of oil and I've had this thing since 2003 or 2004. I've definately got my money out of it.
231MasseyFerguson 9 months ago
I have this same type design engine on my Briggs & Stratton Speed Clean 2000 PSI Pressure Washer. It'll be 7 years old in April of this year, still running strong! I have kept the oil changed and the air filter cleaned... Only problem it has is it's "surging" at engine idle. Runs fine at full throttle and when it's under a load. Do you know what the problem may be?? I've watched all your Q & A videos, along with others! PLEASE KEEP THEM COMING!! I am learning a LOT of things from you... THANKS!!

Don my mower makes a horrible screaming noise when it runs do you know what it might be.
BriggsEngine1 1 year ago
That's the kind of carb I have on my 84 briggs I gave it a good cleaning and it works good now I have to put the recoil spring back in and figure what the horrible screaming noise is on the mower
BriggsEngine1 1 year ago
@BriggsEngine1 sometimes oiling the starter ratchet helps get rid of the noise
donyboy73 1 year ago
@donyboy73 thanks I might try that also do you know how to put the spring back in the starter housing
BriggsEngine1 1 year ago
@BriggsEngine1 i currently do not have a vid for that specific lawnmower

@BriggsEngine1 the "screaming", screeching noise is the "starter clutch".... replace that. trust me bro

so i found myself walkin to skool the otherday and i saw a lawn mower in the grabage so i ran it home then ran back to skool.

TheFactGuy69 1 year ago
@TheFactGuy69 try a new diaphragm and let me know. ionce u let me know i'll make a short video as to what i think it is.

Don, I just repaired a 1986 mower with diaphragm -autochoke. This video was perfect! I had to rebuild the starter ratchet, restring the starter, retorque head, clean out fuel system, rebuild carb, etc. It had sad been sitting for years. It started one first pull. Thanks for the timely lesson.

what does usually cause water to trap inside carb and tank? bad storage (like humid places) or inappropriate cleaning?

@seasonedtoker bad gas humidity etc, poor storage
