@MrJohnathonSmith@pascal62@coltoncrawfordjazz I was about to say that the sax player sucks too, but I thought about it- he's really not that bad. He and Roy both play "out there", and the sax player played just as out as Roy did- I think that's why Roy's great- he has a mastery of scales and stuff and the instrument, which this sax player may not have had as much of.Let's not say he's terrible just because what he played didn't really make him look his best.
@StudioiNcavo I disagree. I think it was just a poor choice for this gig. Players like Dolphy, Ornette, Steve Lacey, Andrew D'Angelo, Marion Brown etc. etc. can all play "out" without sounding terrible. In fact, they do all the time. I'm just merely questioning this saxophonists skill on the horn. It sounds like he's quite forced at times, and musically, I didn't find it as creative or breath-taking as other alto solos I've heard.
@MrJohnathonSmith ....... I think what Jowee Omicil was going for was a Kenny Garrett-esque vibe, but didn't nail it at all. Check out Garrett's solo on "Human Nature" with Miles for comparison. He gets that syncopated sense of rhythm, but his articulation is bang on, which is why he sounds so great. Omicil here is sounding sloppy, and technically he's not doing anything amazing. I can see he is trying to develop a motif at the start, but really- it's a poor idea!
@MrJohnathonSmith .......... Then you've got to consider who he is putting himself up against by playing the alto saxophone- all those other guys- Hodges, Parker, Cannonball, McLean, Ornette, Konitz, Lyons, Dolphy, Brown, Stitt, etc. etc. It doesn't sound like he can uphold the tradition at all! He doesn't even have the articulation necessary to do it!!
@MrJohnathonSmith ...... Sure, he can quote "Cherokee" in a solo, but since when was that any measure of creative playing? I am talking about the ability to not only play your instrument, but to understand what is expected of you from playing a certain kind of instrument. If I told everybody I was into cooking, yet burnt everything in the kitchen, you would question it. If I told everybody I was into running, yet couldn't run even just one kilometer, you would question it.
@MrJohnathonSmith ..... So, If you played alto saxophone, and could not even understand what is expected of your instrument in a professional improvised context, then I would question their abilities in the first place! This saxophone player might not have had the training, but surely you can see that he is definitely a weaker player and maybe should rethink some of his techniques....?
@MrJohnathonSmith Yeah I'd have to agree with you on most of that. That thing he did at around 6:42 and on for a few seconds fooled me into thinking he was decent. Did he even stop at the right time? I don't doubt that I, or presumably you, could play it better. I'm just standing up for the underdog that is the underdog, in this case, for a reason. He probably should stay that way. He couldn't even get the head right...
@pascal62 i agree in a way that he doesn't get a good energy compared to RH's solo...sounds kind of like he should be in a reggae band would fit better. But i love RH and his solos!
@pascal62 what r u talkin bout man the sax player was killin' i just thought he was gonna start breakin out into a flow at 6:26 that wud have been off tha chain but I guess he wasnt hearin it no need to dis another musicians playin tho how can his playing suck? he has good intonation and feel the rest is just personal taste......their is no wrong or right in jazz man!!!!
I'm a jazz studies major. This is my first time hearing this song. Sounds good to me. Just because they play it differently than the studio recording doesn't make it bad. It just shows that they have more originality. NOTHING in the jazz world is the same twice. NOTHING. Nor should it be. If it is, you're doing it wrong, to be honest.
@mikeypattybecky ---Think about it like this. These guys are professional for a reason. These guys got HIRED to play "THEIR" music the way they want. Plus u got no uploads on ur page of your music. so.....shh..
Get that brother on sax a sandwich...get some meat behind your sound!!!!! Brother sound like he didn't have his Weaties today!!!!! Sputtering...weak : (
@videolover61 Nah man his sound isn't weak, its just unique. His style is very exploratory, but he knows what he's playing, you can tell by listening. Have to disagree with you here.
@videolover61 Actually, this is an afrobeat style of music which is influenced by the music of fela kuti. This is a tribute. Look up Fela and listen to the music.
@videolover61 Afrobeat music is not about thick chord voicings. I think you should listen to more music and realize there is more than what you see on gospelchops and hear and play websites. Who do play with?
I know the music, and I dig Afrobeat, Fela, King Sunny Ade. You say "I think you should"...bla bla bla...man, i know what this music is about. I had one opinion about the sax player, you don't agree, well ok...whatever...
@videolover61 I asked who do you play with other than our Church Band. By the way, I can tell you googled the artists you mentioned. YOu are a whack gospel chops kid. Everyone ignore this dude. He is a hater who plays in a church band. LOL. Who do you play with, child?
I'm on the jazz scene, worked with alot of real hip cats...oh im good...more then good im baddass...but thats all the info im giving...i dont need you stalking me!!

Jowee sax sounds similar to Kenny Garrett. I like how he incorporated Cherokee into the beginning of his solo. The whole band was fantastic
