i watched this last night, apparently the hijackers were trying to get to Australia to connect with some friends that were with them on a mision to kill the queen and become kings of the world, their really dumb. That is not what the narrator said. Those who pulled their cords died from drowning because they couldn't exit the plane when it submerged. But then the plane may not have gone underwater had it not clipped the coral reef.
@DoubleGauss Most planes don't float and even in water landings unless your on a smooth water like the Hudson landing even a wave will do damage at those speeds. More would have survived yes if they had not hit the reef. But that is no pilot error as the pilot would not have been able to see it. And being close to a beach the chance of missing one also would have been slim.

You know in reality what really killed the people was panic. In a situation like that even inside the fuselage the water pressure is so low that it's possible to take the Life Jacket off and swim out of the plane, but panic leads to impaired judgment, so many sat inside the plane to their deaths when the solution was simple.

@pitar821 Actually, most everyone would have survived, but the majority of the people that died drowned because they didn't wait to inflate their life-vests as they were instructed. When the plane rolled upside down, their life-vests pinned them to the top of the plane and they weren't able to swim down to the emergency exits to escape.

It would be interesting to know why the captain decided to take such a fast approach and whether or not a gust of wind rolled his plane to the left as he touched down. 200 knots is well above normal landing speed and they should have been very very light without any fuel left. Had he not been so fast and a so far rolled over this could have been a very different outcome. Does anyone know if there were external circumstances that led to this final landing configuration?
@naval8viator i read somewhere, that the pilot and co-pilot were in a fight with the hijackers (the pilot was alone with one of the hijackers, the co-pilot was locked out of the cockpit, i guess he came back in forcefully to help the pilot controle the airplane)... the pilot then lost his bearings and that's why the left wing hit the ocean first.
@naval8viator Apparently, he had to switch to ram air turbine for essential power when the engines ran out of fuel. Due to this they couldn't use the flaps or any other hydraulic powered stuff. So the pilot could not slow down the plane. That is also in addition to th edistraction of fighting off the uncooperating hijackers
@wolfkidex hindsights 20/20, but it would have been great if the pilots would have started the APU and just shot off the engines when the fuel got low. That way they could still have hydraulic power on the way in. The hijackers would probably have been too stupid to realize that the pilots hit the fuel cutoff switches on the engines.
@naval8viator these hijackers were desperate, they even didn't believe that there wasn't enough fuel to go to australia. turning off engines is fine but remember you lose speed an donce the speed is too low, the engines can't get enough turbine action to start. and the hijackers would really have beene pissed off.
@125RTY actualy you can start the engines on the ground with 0 speed...so the speed isn't the problem...the problem is that if you don't start the APU there is no way to start the engines...and the APU is starting very easy(1-5 minutes)...so it wasn't a problem..
@naval8viator I do. The left engine impacted a coral reef and caused the pilot to lose control of the final moments of the landing and crashed how it did. Had the reef not been there, the plane would have landed safely and everyone would have survived
@naval8viator He had to roll over because the engine pods would act like giant water scoops tearing the plane apart if he landed perfectly level with the water. He tipped the plane to the side in order to lose some speed and avoid getting the engine in contact with the water for as long as possible.
@KDALove That doesn't make any sense though either, because then the other engine would be lower and the problem would be even more dramatic as it would cause the plane to cartwheel--which is exactly what happened. It would be much easier to yaw to bleed airspeed, an option I'm sure the pilot considered but chose not to do, likely because he felt it unsafe. You will notice that USA Flight 1549 landed nose high, and wings level on the Hudson with great success.
when the plane crashed, and the live jacket just help you by not letting you sink.. but when water is around you, and you on the ceilling of the plane, u cant swim but drown..

It would be interesting to know why the captain decided to take such a fast approach and whether or not a gust of wind rolled his plane to the left as he touched down. 200 knots is well above normal landing speed and they should have been very very light without any fuel left. Had he not been so fast and a so far rolled over this could have been a very different outcome. Does anyone know if there were external circumstances that led to this final landing configuration?

@naval8viator i read somewhere, that the pilot and co-pilot were in a fight with the hijackers (the pilot was alone with one of the hijackers, the co-pilot was locked out of the cockpit, i guess he came back in forcefully to help the pilot controle the airplane)... the pilot then lost his bearings and that's why the left wing hit the ocean first.

@naval8viator Apparently, he had to switch to ram air turbine for essential power when the engines ran out of fuel. Due to this they couldn't use the flaps or any other hydraulic powered stuff. So the pilot could not slow down the plane. That is also in addition to th edistraction of fighting off the uncooperating hijackers

@wolfkidex hindsights 20/20, but it would have been great if the pilots would have started the APU and just shot off the engines when the fuel got low. That way they could still have hydraulic power on the way in. The hijackers would probably have been too stupid to realize that the pilots hit the fuel cutoff switches on the engines.

@naval8viator these hijackers were desperate, they even didn't believe that there wasn't enough fuel to go to australia. turning off engines is fine but remember you lose speed an donce the speed is too low, the engines can't get enough turbine action to start. and the hijackers would really have beene pissed off.

@125RTY actualy you can start the engines on the ground with 0 speed...so the speed isn't the problem...the problem is that if you don't start the APU there is no way to start the engines...and the APU is starting very easy(1-5 minutes)...so it wasn't a problem..

@naval8viator I do. The left engine impacted a coral reef and caused the pilot to lose control of the final moments of the landing and crashed how it did. Had the reef not been there, the plane would have landed safely and everyone would have survived

@naval8viator He had to roll over because the engine pods would act like giant water scoops tearing the plane apart if he landed perfectly level with the water. He tipped the plane to the side in order to lose some speed and avoid getting the engine in contact with the water for as long as possible.

@KDALove That doesn't make any sense though either, because then the other engine would be lower and the problem would be even more dramatic as it would cause the plane to cartwheel--which is exactly what happened. It would be much easier to yaw to bleed airspeed, an option I'm sure the pilot considered but chose not to do, likely because he felt it unsafe. You will notice that USA Flight 1549 landed nose high, and wings level on the Hudson with great success.
