  • Now I know the TRUE meaning of emo....

  • I...like this o_o

    alot.

  • emos is just another version of punk such as goth, however its been twisted around by fags, and is now generalized as someone who listens to fall out boy and cries all the time and cuts themselves.

  • @misfitsfan28 the all black and hair in the face was always a goth thing, so when I saw these kids who called themselves "emo" I was like "wtf" O_O it makes no sense at all and no offense to anyone but most of these kids who are into that creature they created or try to justify by saying "emos different now" are usually very ignorant and don't know this music, goths know there music roots and so do punks, but these kids don't know shit about anything

  • @bluBlaq33 yes very well put.

  • rites of spring!!!!!

  • A couple of years I got interested in discovering what emo really was. Because I was tired of the mainstreams and stupid teenagers idea of what they thought emo was suppose to be. Thanks to your videos man, i learned what emo was all about and you helped me discover some really awesome bands. Thanks for taking the time to create these awesome videos.

  • It's Fantastic!

  • the problem is we are forced to define a music into some sort of genre. genre's don't exist, they are just made up by people to put things in a pretty little box and define people. good music is good music. becuase i love fugazi and falling forward does not mean i am emo. i also love sick of it all and gorilla biscuits, am i hardcore? i also love old metallica and slayer am i metal? i also love bad religion and penywise am i punk? if you like music listen to it who cares what people think!

  • O.k lets get this straight I was in high school in the mid to late 80's and all

the trends were the same only different names. It called Identity.

Everyone needs one and in fact if you look deep inside yourselves you will

find that the alternative is isolation. There is nothing wrong with how you

fit in with your genre. The key is not to hate and avoid those who do.

Oh yeah stoners listened to Fugazi at least we did

  • I know the roots of my scene, I love the music, old and new. So...I dunno. I guess the label doesn't matter to me. I enjoy being part of the scene. I love the music. (Btw, there is a revival brewing of old school emo, and the bands are fucking incredible. Not as good as the originals, but a close second). (An example being Joie de vivre)

  • You know. I wear all the fashion that is associated with "new" emo. But I love Rites of Spring, Fugazi, Capn' Jazz, The Get Up Kids, Moss Icon, etc. Why not? It's good music. I also agree with what most people call the "Emo" personality. I also listen to the bands that kids think are emo nowadays. It's good music (most of it anyway). I really don't think it matters. Emo is a style of music, scene is the fashion people associate with the newer version of that genre. I don't think it matters.

  • EMO DOESN'T EXIST ANYMORE

the kids now r classifying emo as a bunch of depressed, skinny jeans wearing, eyeliner wearing kids with flippy hair

no thats not emo, emo isnt a style, its music, nothin more

the new "emo" is jus a bunch of depressed scene kids

and emo music doesnt exist anymore either, with a few exceptions to bands around in the 90's (the get up kids)

i'm 15, but i know what emo is and isn't

  • @XxAdTrFrEaKiNrOcKsXx Times have changed. Emo to kids now means exactly what you described it as. The true definition of emo is lost in the hearts of all the good souls from the 80s who created this genre, if you want to call it a genre, and with the people that are true to it. It's sort of like the word gay. 30 years ago gay meant happy and nothing else. Now it means homosexual. It's just kids being kids.

  • @XxAdTrFrEaKiNrOcKsXx hey dude genres change, old school rock sounds nothing like new rock, old school rap sounds nothing like new rap, shit changes get over it. its no big deal people worry over the smallest things now and days, there's bigger shit to be worried about, then complaining about whats emo and whats not, plus youre 15 no offence but you havnt really expierienced life yet so keep your opinion to yourself

  • Indian summer. Anyone??? Anyone?? ....ok :P

  • ian mackaye from fugazi trash talked emo and how different it was from hardcore and how it suck ect. when it was first beginning

  • Its crazy because this doesnt seem like some fad and image based bullshit it just seems like good music..

well it was prolly a better time back then to be a kid... being a teen is horrible now i envy everyone who lived through the 80's and 90's

  • Gray Matter = greatest band

  • the music is ok, but the whole emo thing is still incredibly gay

  • this is true emo i hate all the fashion scene emo poser kids emo was never about looks it was about real music not a fashion look all that scene kids can go fuck themselves cause of them all people dont know what real emo screamo and post hardcore is

  • Thank you for posting this video.

  • I meant to add a ??? after all that...

  • Fugazi=Emo

  • o.k iam fifteen and i hate kids my age or around thinking becausr tehery calim there depressed wear all black and lisen to so called sreameo/emo/scene music there consided emo. emo is a type of music that i bet was really awesome that does not really excist anymore because of simple minded kids its the same thing with real punk and real hiphop

  • scene kids are pricks mostly.

  • Yay, emo back before there was a freaking dress code! And when the music was a hell of a lot of fun! Of course I hit emo during the height of alternative whinyness, which is what people keep using for modern "emo". Eesh.

Oh wait, there was kind of an unofficial dress code. It was whatever we could afford at the Goodwill because we spent all our money on cassettes and shows. Heh.

  • man i wish i could of discovered these bands sooner :( i really like the music! it sounds like it has more feel to it then the commercialized(hope i spelled it right) lame ass bands like fob n mcr.. thnx 4 posting this!!!!!!!

  • I find it kind of funny how metalheads and people like that hate on "emo kids" when they don't know what emo actually is.

  • I thought "emo" style was skinny jeans, black converse, and like black band T's and stuff and black hair? Now it's like. I dunno. The Justice store on crack.

  • @DanniHeartsU hahaha no that's just a bunch of 13 year old hott topic fanboys, the emo bands i listen too, i would be honored to be called and emo kid. and im 20 lol

  • some of them remind me of a more aggressive version of The Cure

  • Fuck New School, Fuck pathetic suicide Emos!

Hail to the 80's Hardcore music! This is my opinion!

  • GRAY MATTER!!!!!!!

  • @boneyskull84 I'm sorry dude but you clearly don't know what you're talking about. You seem to think emo refers to the shitty mallccore pop-punk around today. Well "emo" was around WAY before that and bands like this were being called "emo" or "emo-core" before Fall Out Boy were even in junior high.

There. Now you're enlightened, so you no longer have to make embarrassingly unfounded threats.

  • Yo mamma. :) That is all ;)

  • well, well, well ...........

let me tell you, stupd kid, all of this music has nothing of Emo in itself, so well, f ck you and let the music be, even if you don't really like it!

i'm pretty sure that you rather listen to shtty music like spice girls or backstreet boys and also you are gay, but well, i don't mess with it.

p.s. do you have a band? you don't know anything about music, so then, please stop posting your bullsht! it's totally absurd!

  • Comment removed

  • Hey guys i do old emo drum covers!! Gimme a listen, and any requests would be awesome!

  • Fugazi and embrace are thousand times better than all the modern "emo" bands, like my chemical romance and all those. Not that I necessarily hate them, but the early socalled emocore with ian mckaye just kicks their ass

  • @BearWindAppleyard MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE IS NOT EMO GOSH they r horror punk man, you liking fugazi should know whats the new wave of emo... some examples? Eyes Set To Kill, Raein, Hopes Die Last, Blessthefall, Alexisonfire, A Static Lullaby, they are new wave emo bands, bands you wont hear on the radio, why? cause they r underground, how real new wave emo is these days

  • @JzXify The media are calling them emo, I know that doesn't mean that they are emo... I don't really know that much about emo in generel, but maybe it will come...

  • @BearWindAppleyard yeah, I knew aboout the media calling them emo's... but the media thinks they know more about something than the people who followed it, so I wont really keep fighting about that thats MCR probs, all I know is that they got their inspiration from an 80s punk band called the misifts, which was the band who started the looking black thing and dark, horrific lyrics with punk music, called horror punk, sorry if I overacted in last comment anyways

  • @JzXify it's cool, I know about The Misfits, I would maybe say they also got some inspiration from the 90's commercial punk bands like Green day, and also from some of these real emo-bands, I hear some similarities in Rites of Spring's sound, particularly in one song...

  • @BearWindAppleyard exactly lol

  • punk bands have been singing songs about emotions long before these bands, what about the buzzcocks,wipers,etc...Fuck how good do drive like jehu sound compared to the shit out there now.Wire, mission of burma as well.Emo seems to clump together any band that sang songs from the gut, which is so not true of this new drivel.Bloody shame, just another watering down of a punk sub genre.

  • How come when you talk to all these new wave "Emo kids" they have no idea who Fugazi or Dag Nasty are? it's really a bit annoying

  • @MrDevilchild666 cause they are fashincore kids, not new wave EMO

  • Now this actualy IS emo, unlike the stuff you hear on the radio today. If half the scene kids who listen to supposed "emo" stuff thats popular mainstream-wise gave this a listen, you think they would like it at all? =P

  • Rise against ripped them off bad......they FUCKING suck and PEENAS

  • como se lla la rola de gray matter

  • can someone tell me the name of the first song?

  • give me the cure by Fugazi.

  • thx

  • @DaCrackPOT91 Emocore is like Punk, but it's about the emotion, sentiments... and Punk is about the governement, some violence, the difference..

  • @Sergua1208

    Emocoreis not like Punk....

Punk is loud violenc muciv and it started at the late sixtees..... thank u

  • @PunkNotDeadify well ian from fugazi was te lead singer of minor threat an amazing hardcore punk band

  • we never called this music emo way back, it's all punk and hardcore.

  • yea, emo nowadays not like the old emo.

  • im 14 years old and i want to ask you... why does my decade SUCK? all this shit rocks.

  • Every decade has shitty music, and you know what? all of it is mainstream. If you want good music in the 2000s, you just need to look underground, because a LOT of good music came out this decade.

  • couldnt agree more

  • 14? Perfect. Get a guitar now. Get good. When you turn 17, start an awesome band.

  • its the tv's fault...im 18, kids like us need to get off our lazy butts and bring this stuff back and make ppl understand what good music is

  • @reverendkillj0y la dispute is a great emo band from this decade... well last decade :P

  • yeah im 13, i wonder the same thing all the time

  • this genre may be dead, but i still listen to it. fugazi, jawbreaker, mineral, the promise ring and sunny day real estate, etc.

  • SDRE<3

  • I am sick and tired of "kids" now-a-days classifying emo as a personality trait, when it's actually the great type of genre that has helped me and, i'm sure, many others through so much. these kids with their Fall Out Boy and their inaccurate use of the word "emo", as in, 'you're emo because you wear black and listen to REAL music.'? don't think so. they need to reach out to bands like The Get Up Kids and Jawbreaker. if only these kids could see we've all been seeing for all this time.

  • i feel you . im still in hiqh school and other people are like "Are you Emo?"

Me : ... I listen to Emotive punk if thats wht you mean

    Them : wtf ? I mean are u emo ?

Me: STFU ! You dont know what emo is then shut it .

  • @MasochisticMaiden ME TOO but no1 in my school is the same as me as i come from a 'posh' school and its a pain in the arse!

  • @MrIlikecheese13 I go to a school where kids worship Nicki Minaj it's horrifying ... I usually want to educate them musically . I mean seriously some kid asked me "Who is Queen?" and another goes "Emo isn't a music style its cutting yourself and writing bad poetry"

  • @MasochisticMaiden

I know exactly what you mean!

I'm a Sophomore in HS, and I wear black, dark make-up. (what my peers classify as "emo")

It's such bullocks to have people ask me that question!

  • @MasochisticMaiden just say yhe,dont be a drama qween,fuck school

  • Man you're so right, most kids these days classify almost any hardcore music as emo and most think it's a fashion. It makes me sick too.

  • I wasn't aware that Fugazi was considered emo.

  • early 90's san diego emo was some good shit.

  • bullets was

  • emo isn't even a concrete genre, at least not yet. Fugazi would be flabberghasted to be compared to such talentless fucks like my chemical romance and the academy is..

  • Totally.

I don't understand why people think bands such as MCR (although I do like them) are emo. I'd seriously shoot myself in the face if I was in a REAL emo band and was compared to a band like Fall out Boy...

  • MCR were Emo for real :D But then they were undergroundish band. And now they're MTV pop :D

  • I suppose their first album was a lot less upbeat and pop-like.

  • MCR was a hard working band on "Bullets" so the DIY ethic and raw sound is what most consider Emo but seriously they werent and aren't emo. As far as Heathenlegions goes... I disagree with so much of that but whatever. Emo is dead in my opinion... aside from Saetia and Circle Takes the Square... its not a genre anymore

  • I agree.

It's kind of sad that the emo genre never got as big as alternative... then again I bet if it did the media would try to change it like everything else...

  • I would say they all ready have changed it. I mean it's not even a style of music anymore it's a haircut and tight pants.

  • Well, not necessarily.

For the most part, it's just a style now but there are still real emo bands out there. You just have to look a little harder.

  • i agree its just underground vs.mainstream with everything.

    R.I.P. mtv

  • Well, i mean i dress like that, and frankly kids call me emo, but i listen to good stuff, like Fugazi SDRE, The Promise Ring, THe Get up kids, Saves The Day, Jawbreaker, etc. Everyone else comes in with band shirts like BRING ME THE HORIZON, and A Day to Remeber, It was funny these kids one day asked me if i liked BMTH, I had a SDRE shirt on, I turned to them, and i was like Sorry I only listen to good music not garbage, pointed at my shirt and turned around.

  • LOLOLNO

  • @MCRFANGD2 actually i brought you bullets was kinda post hardcore and alternative-ish so yea they did start off kinda emo...i mean not that poser shit we hear today

  • Old Emo rocks =) at least back then it wasn't a derogatory type of music.

  • dude... I cant believe you ignored the band that basically created the whole "emo" movement... Rite of Spring??? I mean come on man...

  • Drink deep...

  • WOW someone else likes that song besides me XD?

  • he mentions it in the description

  • APPROVE.

  • allot of these bands, namely fugazi, are not emo

maybe at some point someone called them an emo band but theyre just post punk/hardcore

"I must say one thing. I must say emocore must be the stupidest f$%ing thing I've ever heard in my entire life [...] emocore? Emotional hardcore?? As if hardcore wasn't emotional to begin with. Anyway, it's caca. I hate to say it but you can only hold your silence for too long about this stupid sh#$t." -ian mackay

  • WTF. Fugazi is not emo in any form. They were straight peace-punk. Wtf is this shit. D: Fugazi would be offended.

  • i think it's interesting to call these bands emo...i mean, it never really was a true sub genre. you could call pretty much any post hardcore band from the early 90s emo, especially if they were on an indie label. i always thought of drive like jehu as math rock, but i suppose in this sense the emo moniker fits. really though, if you're talking about emo in the early 90s, you need to mention sunny day real estate.

  • My Chemical Romance (and their ilk) are all fucking garbage.

  • to be precise, My Chemical Romance is a completely different sub genre, also referred to as emo. genre names come back to describe different types of music all the time. look at ska, hardcore, garage, even punk. prapagandhi and the ramones have nothing musically in common... yet still, both indisputably punk rock.

  • EMO ISNT PUNK OK!!! GET THAT STRAIGHT!!! it neva was and neva will be.

  • MCR rocks but is really unrelated to this video guys

  • yea....gray matter really sounds like punk...

love oldschool and Moss Icon!!! :]

  • gray matter sounds more punk

  • Emo is what people call Post-Hardcore,but this is still correct :)

  • Fugazi is punk?

  • i think it would just be horror punk, i think too much pop was brought into emo, cough* ''the cure'' *cough

  • THE CURE is pop gothic...

  • whatevr they are doesnt matter i think they're good

  • I don't get why so many people are ashamed of the word emo. I happen to think emo is artful, and a beautiful expression of frustration and love through music.

  • In regards to the Revolution Summer bands, particularly Fugazi...they never set out to be either "emo" or "emotive." Ask Ian MacKaye and he'll tell you that he thought that Minor Threat was just as "emotive" or "emotional" as Fugazi (or Embrace or The Evens, for that matter). It is interesting, however, since Ian (Embrace) and Guy Picciotto's (Rites of Spring) bands prior to Fugazi were the first bands to be called Emo (emotional hardcore), largely as a swipe at their bands.

  • FUGAZI IS PUNK NOT EMO!!!!!

  • Emo is a deriative form of hardcore punk, calm down

  • you didn't get it at all...

  • post hardcore...

  • its post hardcore, thus emo

  • Real emo is still alive. It's just too underground to be noticed. And with bands like MCR, FOB etc. being labeled as emo, they're probably never gonna be noticed.

  • fugazi ruled and kicked ass,

there just a smart punk band NOT emo-emo they just had strong emotions

  • your crazy?

  • You're a piece of shit, go slice your wrists open; you ignorant twat.

  • fuck you, go die in an avalanche of corporate rockers

  • Go listen to Brokencyde or MCR you prick.

  • what? dont disgrace emotive hardcore from the 80s

this shit influenced all your little "hardcore" bands from today...

  • I like Emotive Hardcore.

I was talking to some other kid

  • woops thats a "ma bad"

  • dude this is REAL emo music, the original sound of it, without emotive hardcore, you wouldn't even get crap bands like mcr or panic at the disco

  • See below comments. I hate MCR, P!ATD and Brokencyde.

  • in my opinion, Gerard is just ignorant to music, he said quote "Emo is f****n bulls**t and i hate people that associate emo to mcr" first of all, they are punk, a derivative of emo and they sing depressing stuff lol Im not okay, Thank you for the venom and second of all, there really are good emo bands that know what they are doing that mcr is a disgrace of

  • MCR is not punk, learn what punk is before you start mislabeling bands as it.

  • lol your a punk

  • REAL punk are Bad Brains, Black Flag, and Iggy Pop learn your history before mislabel me mislabeling a band

  • MCR ain't punk. they're on a major label and make videos for MTV.

    not exaclty DIY, holmes.

  • Ramones were on MTV in the 90's......

  • You don't have to be DIY to be punk. o.o

That's the most stereo typical shit I've heard.

  • real emo, not whiny mainstream alternative rock poser shit.

  • drive like jehu is legendary. their music is symphonic.

  • stupid emos we aare all going yo die so enjoy life

  • know what emo is before you say shit like that. also learn how to spell.

  • Ian Mackaye said that emo is the dumbest thing he's ever heard. At a show in '86, he said, and I'm paraphrasing here, "Like hardcore wasn't already emotional anyway?". I think thats a good question. Also, Ian Mackaye is arguably one of the biggest figures in hardcore, and we know that without hardcore, there'd be no emo, so even people like us who know what real emo is still need to question how eager we are to put tags on things. Oh, and The Cure was formed in the 70's. Not emo.

  • The cure is Post Punk

  • True. Which is weird because they started around the time punk was really big, as opposed to afterward.

  • everything OLD SCHOOL IS better! hahaha at XxMayer's comment, i agree XD

  • I fucking love Jawbreaker, their one of my favorite bands

  • i dont like older emo or new rly, especially new, i would perfer old

  • AMEN!

  • who agrees new emo sucks. old school emo is awesome!

  • i agree

  • well some new emo does suck....

i mean its good and stuff

its just not as good as old school

  • No, new emo (fake emo) is SHIT, get it through your head

  • new emo is just music about being fags.. they should just call it whine about your great life

  • I really like that you are trying to teach kids that are new to the subculture about our history. Bands like rites of spring, the hated, moss icon, and other DC/Maryland bands. ANy one like the Hated? fucking amazing band that played around 1986-1990. people call them folk punk, like the fore fathers of against me!...so like i said, good for you man, i hate it when i see a stupid comments from stupid kids...but i cant get angry cause they will always be there. hit me up if you want to talk music

  • way to name drop

  • dont hate...ive just been on Hated related kick(hah i love saying that) ...but like i said...dont hate. :)

  • anything that flows into the mainstream will become stigmatized... due to the fact that shitty bands label themselves as whatever is considered "cool" at that short moment of time.

  • Emo was a cool genre back then...

    Pretty cool music...

and that lovely geek look that never ceases to amuse me...

Now it became the gay-sad-wristslashing-scenecore kids that people beat up for no reason

  • thats called scene what you just explained at the end of your comment

emo is not what it used to be....

  • Aye

  • so true so very true

  • i fkn love fugazi?

  • where is Rites of Spring???''goldstein670''

    true man

  • fuck you fugazi it´s not emo

  • emo was actually meaningful back then, now its just trendy poser fashion bullshit.

  • Or post-hardcore

  • There is no such thing as emo.

    This is Post-Punk.

  • it was actually "Embrace" not fugazi that started emo.

  • the real EMO thing like using the word and things like that is started by rites of spring but i would agree if you say that the real genre is started togheter by embrace and rites of spring after bands like dag nasty make it possible to do things like that

  • i thought it was rites of spring

  • im 13yr old & im emo kid soo i hate wend ppl disrespect 2 emo it make me angry wend that happen oh and good job

  • Jeez, Fugazi are Emo. A lot of the dudes who post on this video just don't want to admit that they like something that could be classified as an "emo" band. Get over it.
