heard this the other day as I was waking up from sleeping in the TV room. The movie Switch was starting, and this song just gave me goose bumps. So hauntingly beautiful!!!
this is one of the most beautiful songs ever made, paul young has the most unique voice and with clannads haunting voice they compliment such wonderful lyrics and music
I remember breaking up with my first true girlfriend - this was the song that this sad kid used to cry myself to sleep with! That was twenty years ago! I feel so old LOL!!! What a song, though. Stands up to the modern songs of late! A classic
I cried at the end of Switch because of this song. I was 15 and CONVINCED that I experienced a piece of heaven. It's like blue sky and clouds with the lyrics softly written in white. I never forgot that feeling.
Also, if you listen to the track all the way to the very end you can hear Clannad softly cooing as if lulling a baby to sleep but really reassuring us! Honest and loving with a happy ending to everyone's story. It almost makes this life make sense.
I remember hearing this when I saw Blake Edwards' "Switch." To this day, every time I hear this song, I think of heaven. No song has ever FELT that way to me and it's one of the pieces which inspired me to take up music again.
My God! I am so in love with this song, it is the best song I have found. I have been in a rut with searching for great love songs and this is the greatest I have found, it has an actual poem for lyrices.
Paul Young did a fantastic work on this song....however our own Julio Bernardo Euson sang it better back in 1971...no one ever sung it better than him.....we would really love to have you on your island Aruba again for at least one concert... it would be a dream come true.....bin deleita nos cu bo voz...nos ta semper cu bo.....

Paul Young is a great interpreter of songs and has a vast back catalogue of wonderful music, but this is one of his best. The voices combine sublimely ,the lyrics are meaningful. I would have thought that Paul Young will look back on this as musically one of his finest accomplishments. It should have been a number one hit single, but there is no accounting for taste.
Thanks for this video! Funny that it made such an impact when I first heard it on the movie...then somehow forgot about it. But now I remember...this is such a beautiful cover of the song.
Isn't the lady Enya back when she was still in a group with her family- Clannad?
not many songs make me weepy I am not a usually very sensitive person but this is one song that reminds me of my childhood and, not to be too dramatic makes me feel like a vulnerable child (I am 45) this probably sounds silly and make no sense but I am typing exactly what this song brings out of me. "Try to Remember" is another one and strangely Pachabels "Canon"
don't feel like a sap saying that. i totally know how you feel and what you are trying to say.. i'm 37 and there are certain song that make me ache and think of all the years gone by. and really miss that carefree childhood. another one that always made me feel that way was Taylor Dane, "love will lead you back". try it out.. good post
@tonytiger1964 , I guess you are a romantic, just like me. I love this song and Pachabels " Canon was my wedding song, but the song that truly empitamizes me is, Too much Love will kill me by Brian May.
@tonytiger1964 The are two songs that I have liked through out my life and that remind me of when I was innocent The first is Both Sides Now (Judy Collins cover) and Pachabel's Canon. I am now sixteen and I recently opened an eleven year old time capsule. It had been made for the new millennium when I was still four. It was meant to be opened last year on my birthday but it had been forgotten about. In it there was a packet with questions. One was what my favorite song was: Both Sides Now.
@tonytiger1964 This song makes me blubber every time. It's just got something about it. I'm 40 and a 70's a child. Makes you remember how simple life really used to be, :-( Makes you want to go straight back doesn't it? Although I was a fan of Paul Young in my teens, my favourite version is the Glen Campbell version.
@tonytiger1964 I feel exactly the same way. It;s impossible to hear this witout being a child again; I'm 45 now and the song has layers of meanings which were lost to me when I heard it as a child on the radio, doodling in my sketchbook. But the memories it evokes are sweet ones. So there you go ...
A very fine interpretation of a great song. I prefer Judy Collins - but only because it was the first version I heard at a particularly bitter-sweet time in my life.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Nowhere near the best version, probably one of the worst. If I were to listen to this version while driving on the highway, I'd fall asleep behind the wheel and wind up in the ditch.
You are right, my friend. Have been away for awile, maybe I was to harsh. Sorry if my opinion was a little too much, was in a complete love and leave-situation, much feelings, and not so thoughtfull.
Pure brilliance. I feel like I am at the pearly gates every time I hear this. It worked wonderfully with the film "Switch" at the beginning with the cloud shots AND the during the end sequence with the matte painting of NYC (thank you ILM!).
Both film and this arrangement/performance are HIGHLY overlooked/underrated.
Maybe I was in a state of sorrow or perhaps I really love this version. What do you think? As 50 years old I probebly have heard more music 15 years before you where born. Yes, Joni Mitchell is the master of this, and there have been several cover that's more than good, but please let me love this one, ok?
I'm with you here. This is one of the most beautiful songs ever sang. I love the duet on it and the instrumentation. This is the best version of this song, period.
Bette Midler also does the best version of 'From A Distance'.
This song seems exclusive to great musicians and singers, but I still think Judy Collins is ahead of the pack on this song! She also sings it in the best key.
I heard this song on the radio back in 1994 just once and it never left my mind. Now thanks to you I've re-discovered it. Thank you very much. This is such a beautiful version.
Respected Paul, all the compliments for your and Moya's excellent cover on Joni Mitchell's song! The two of you gave new emotional strength to the original version of the song. I even remember your version as the first one, the one which followed me through all of my childhood. Thank you both for being very important (musical) part of my life as artists, all over the eighties and into nineties... and even today. Great Thanks to Joni, of course, too... From one common guy born in 1975.
Lovely duet remake of the original is beautifully sung by both Young and Brennan and was definitely too good of a song for Switch. Thanks for posting.
