No one man's accomplishments will surpass that of a whole continent. Whoever the fuck zhuge liang was, he was smarter than you, because it takes a special kind of idiocy and obsession to post a comment like that.
@PoppingSanta it's all a matter of opinion. the Spartans were certainly the most hardcore of any warriors, there lifestyle from birth to glorious death overshoes all ancient warriors even the samurai! but the spartan phalanx was not invincible and was eventually defeated by there fellow Greeks such as Epaminondas of Thebes and Macedonia afterwords. as for advancing the faction and keeping it dominate for a long and stable period of time that goes to the Roman Legion.
@PoppingSanta I don't know about that, the Assyrian soldiers might just be more "hardcore." they were so terrifying that no one would fight them in open combat, which was actually the norm then, so the Assyrians also become terrifying in siege warfare some thing the Spartans definitely can't claim.
Sounds like a bunch of propaganda. There have never been any soldiers that are so "hardcore" that no one were brave/stupid enough to face them.
And nothing of you said were either necessarry to say or new to me. The fact that almost everything in Roman Culture and Military tactics/equipment is borrowed from others has nothing to do with this, and does not change the fact that the Individual Spartan Soldier were better than the individual Roman Legionnaire in 1v1.
@PoppingSanta The whole Romans as innovators thing was just adding information not yet in the conversation, not me auguring against you. But as far as the Assyrians are concerned, obviously some armies were dumb enough to face them in open combat, otherwise there would be no reason to fear them in open combat.
@PoppingSanta sorry, my post ran out of room. The vast majority of ancient rulers did not want to risk their armies against the fearsome Assyrians in open battle, so they would try to get the advantage by hiding behind their walls, and even then the Assyrians would almost certainly win (one example of a loss was Jerusalem).

@PoppingSanta Did Sparta forge the greatest Empire the world has ever known, the Empire that is responsible for the civilization we know today? Did Sparta crush powerful empires, make vassals of ancient kingdoms and rule more than a quarter of the world's population for 1000 years? Nope. But Rome did and that wouldn't have been possible without the best and most efficient fighting force in the ancient world. Sparta had great warriors but the Legions were made of soldiers.
@PoppingSanta The thing about Sparta vs Rome was Sparta was the best at an old style of fighting, while the Romans were good fighter, and awesome innovators, they knew how to take a good idea and run with it. Think about it, the gladius and pilum from the Spanish tribes, the manipular legion (c.370 or so to 102 BC) from the Samnite tribes, architecture and religion from the Greeks, and many more.
@RomaInvicta1 First, the Spartans did at least crush the armies of powerful empires, they did make vassals of ancient kingdoms (almost every other Greek city-state), and the Romans did not rule a quarter of the world population for 1000 years, more like 300 (if you include the conquest of Dacia by Trajan [name not necessarily spelled correctly]). All in all though I agree with your position.
@augustusempire I'm sure you'll appreciate that I wan't trying to be totally accurate but rather expressing the splendour of Rome as well as I could. :)
lol, greatest? i highly doubt the entire europe at the time was smarter than zhuge liang.

Yeah that post was a year old and let's just say that a year ago I wasn't much for actually explaining what I mean ^^.
The Spartan soldier was, like you said, the most "Hardcore" soldier the world had ever seen, but the Roman Army was the most effective :P

I never said anything else. However, the the regular Spartan SOLDIER would've fucked up the regular Roman Legionnaire.
