  • This is from the 1969-70 season.

  • At least the one greeblie got his wish which made it a happy ending.

  • I remember this too, loved it as a kid. If it came out in the 1st season it should have been on the Old School DVDs but unfortunately it wasn't. BTW some of you described this as "morbid" and "violent". Nah, I don't think so. Cartoons like Tom and Jerry and The Roadrunner were a lot more "morbid" and "violent" than this. Yet those still get shown and this gets taken off Sesame Street? Go figure!

  • It was another time

  • @easynorth we do not question the greebly......the greebly just ...is

  • i never said i was 45, i am 42 this aired in 69, I looked it up. i was born in 67, you must be confusing me with someone else.

  • i named my cat Greeblie, 4 yrs ago, I always thought I made the word up.......until I saw this today, OMG I was 2 yrs old when this was aired, that tells you the power of the subconscious memory. I remember this now like it was yesterday, Be careful what you do and say in front of your babies, they retain it for sure! Luckily for me I retained Greeblies!!!!!!!

  • @gumba666 That's very funny and interesting, but how could you have been 2 yrs old when this first aired if you're 45 years old now? Sesame Street has only been on the air 40 years!

  • @mstatz i never said i was 45, i am 42 this aired in 69, I looked it up. i was born in 67, you must be confusing me with someone else.

  • Powdered Toast MAN !!!!!!!!!

  • Even if I understand what you said it still sounds just plain dumb.

  • "Waiter, I'll have a greeblie burger to go, please."

"Sorry, sir - we're fresh out of greeblies."

  • good lord you could never make/show a clip like this now. but i love them.

  • aww the ending is sweet

    but its pretty morbid haha

  • This is eerily similar to a song I heard in a movie based on Agatha Christie's Book, "And then There Were None." Well, I guess that was the basis of the animation!

  • Counting-down rhymes were pretty common at the time this cartoon was made; Agatha Christie and the animator probably got the idea from similar sources.

  • Actually, Christie's book was published in 1939, the first movie aired in 1945, though a Hollywood ending alters the actual story. Maybe the people that made this saw that one-I guess that's why it was a happy ending for that final greeblie.

  • Hey mstatz, I just went over to Muppet Wiki. According to them, this sketch came out during the 1st season of SS in 1969.

  • GREEBLIEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSS!!!!!

  • Wonder what greebly tastes like? A lot of them do get eaten!

  • They taste like chicken.

  • Naturally!

  • You're right, this is rather morbid, that's what also makes it fun! I get a kick out of "4 little Greeblies, swimming in the sea, One Forget How!" (notice how the mouse drowned too?) Music works perfectly here, listen for the buzzes, zips, and drain effects.

  • Ha, ha! That's hilarious about the mouse drowning; I didn't think of it like that when the gradually encroaching water consumed the mouse!

  • This one was came out right when Sesame Street first came on. Interesting narration by then "Laugh-in's", Gary Owens.

  • Oh come on, it IS slightly morbid, but that's what was cool about little sketches like these! Remember that Sesame Street was really breaking borders in television at the time, and the viewing public responded very favorably - otherwise it probably would have just turned into another dry Kukla Fran and Ollie show!

A few of the comments here make me wonder how some people manage to get out of bed in the morning, all the horrors that await them in the outside world...

  • My God! I'd never realized how creepy this was! Poor Greeblies!

  • you got the one with the eight spiders?

  • I saw this once in a 1990s episode, and I was never certain as to whether or not I would see this. I understand why they retired this.

  • Kind of sad but at least it has a happy ending.

  • This clip was done in either 1969 or 70. It uses the same theme as the intro and narration to "A is for Archer".

  • "Arithmetic has no mercy." -- Marc Antony

  • Woner how many Greeblies their were when the last one wish upon the star.

  • better Greeblies than ethnic stereotypes!

  • Haven't seen Ten little Greeblies for a very long time. Thanks for uploading this classic Sesame Street clip.

  • This one always made me sad when I watch it as a kid. I would not trade it for what kids are watching now ... so condescending. There is nothing wrong with some negative emotion. It's a part of life. Can't teach a kid how to cope with it otherwise.

  • I remember this around 1970 too. It was sad to me, and was a great way to teach children about emotions. I was so happy when he wished upon a star and all his friends came back. This type of teaching is not present in todays children's programming. Its all nonsense!

  • a bit violent for a Sesame Street cartoon. :O

  • Oh come on it's not that big of a deal.

  • Superb! I always loved this one, especially that heartwarming ending. A cartoon like this would never get shown in the bland and sterile world of childrens' television today.

  • That cartoon seemed pretty violent, yet very memorable.

  • Once again, Gary Owens.

  • One little cartoon,

    creeped me out before;

    still, it's cool enough to

    earn a whopping four. :)
