I'm American, married to a Brit and having considerable health problems that basically went untreated in the USA because of lack of insurance...I did get treatment for in the UK while there visiting. Not only was I given an NHS card and, because I have thyroid problems, I was given an exemption on paying for medication. Never did I wait more than 10-15 minutes to see the doctor, even when I was a walk-in patient. The doctor's even spent more time with me than their US counterparts do.

Our health care system is a disgrace and a shame. Goog hardworking people find themselves begging just to get the care they need to survive. No other civilized country in the world.
