He says it's pre-capt Kirk which is indeed correct but it is an understatement. The two hour TV movie "Broken Bow" takes place approx. 10 years before the Federation charter was signed. Captain Archer was out saving the galaxy when Kirk's grandfather was still in diapers. LOL!

It's basically to do it the way it's done in Star Trek - locally "compress" (warp) space, and move through it at less than the speed of light. Not ACTUALLY travelling at, or beyond, the speed of light, but EFFECTIVELY doing so.
