  • What kind of a person eould unlike elliot smith, i mean come on and open YOUR EARS!!

  • im baked beautiful

  • Amazing.

  • some people say his music is sad or makes sad... i dont think so.. i think it makes happy, warm and satisfy in a very special way... i think you're with me

  • No hay nada mejor

  • he's a sick, twisted person. depressing, dark, somber, but poetic, significant, beautiful. not only a musical genius but he has a way with words.

  • Couldn't they have given him a more comfy chair to sit on... ?

  • stares into space like a dead china doll,

the intensity of such a short line is truly incredible

  • I love Elliott Smith. He means so much to his fans. Regarding the hateful comment, you people are the antithesis of what Eliott stood for, and his fans still hold dear.

  • I missed meeting him by 5 minutes twice. I accept that I more than likely did not deserve to have met him. ASll my friends that met him said he was the most down to earth kat there was. Humble was brought several times......Even now he knocks me back. being from Portland only makes me more sad because he was one of us. Drinking PBRs, listening to Elliott at Clinton Street Pub from a portable discman will always be a part of my history.

  • good music for sippin' Jim Beam and coke in the corner booth on a rainy day

  • Must have been high... the waltz is really sped up on this version..

  • I love Elliott x 1,000,000,000..... He makes my days bearable.... I only wish that I could tell him that personally....

  • I love the video for this song. Even though he doesn't quite hit the high notes, I think that just adds to his performance. It's very emotional. I like the acoustic version better than the CD version, because it's more raw.

  • I miss the day that there was still new Elliott Smith songs I could hear for the first time and listen to non stop for days.

  • This is a rushed version. Musta wanted to end this show.

  • @bcglass He hated performing live. I'm a musician and I can't even bear the thought. It's hard to bare you're soul like that, a lot harder than people give artists crdit for sometimes.

  • i miss you

  • His voice is so delicate and yet so flawness - pure brilliance. Share this.

  • I love that pause after the 2. "I'm tired"! Pure beauty!

Love you and miss you RIP Elliott

  • It seems as thought everyone knew they were witnessing greatness and just let it all unfold as the night went on. I'd like a cheering, raucous crowd, but I'd love it if I could shut everyone up like he did this night.

  • I tried to play waltz #2 but could never get the elliot smith effect. He must have been really affected by sadness to hit those notes.

  • Oh my ........... this makes me cry

  • dido- rest in peace...finally.

  • again...the most underrated singer/songwriter ever! ...i'm mean really..

  • well even if you're mean you still make a very valid point

  • @sprinkleday

    agreed

  • This must have been a brilliant gig to be at. This song sounds great on guitar and piano. With regard to the last comment, elliott smith died too young but still his music is testament to the fact that he kept the child alive somewhere in him til the end. No matter how old you are always remember to keep the child alive in you..thanks elliott.

  • Elliott was 5'7". I am 5'7" too! Although i am 15 and he was an adult. I hope i don't grow anymore just so i can be like Elliott. I just love the music and the man.

    RIP - Elliott Smith

  • drink a lot of coffee and work out

  • Brain chemistry sucks. It's so unfair that there are so many brilliant, beautiful people that can't see the value of their own lives, while at the same time the Earth is overburdened with over-entitled assholes who do nothing, inspire nothing, and leave nothing. Thank you for your music, Elliot.

  • fuckin spot on]

  • I second that.

  • my comment was for big tone, tony loc, the chump. Anthonyf22

  • Too fuckin brilliantly anyone tell him off and i'll punch you :[

  • Its because of people like you life is a shit hole. You are the shit. The shit on the bottom of my shoe. Hear me loud and clear son.

  • If I saw you I would rip your face off with my bare hands. Don't ever, EVER talk that way about Elliott Smith. I'm not joking around, you shit-faced weasel

  • god your funny

  • i love this song so much, it makes my insides hurt and gives me goose bumps.

  • he had alot of girlfriends, died with a girlfriend, and i dont think he was bi either, but if he was id take some of that

    XO elliott

  • i think you mean died FROM a girlfriend...

  • oh, elliott....he's the kind of guy who you see on the street w/a half smile, and you know he deserves a full one....it's too bad....he deserved a lot better....i guess that's why you tell people you love them

  • This guy has brought so much happiness to me in my life with his music.

  • Same, imagine how much more happiness would have ensued if he had not died. :(

  • some one watch his freaking right hand.....wow....

  • yea, interesting technique...

  • absolutely breathtaking...

  • ummm......

  • you are an idiot

  • voice is there

  • HE is just incredible...

i discovered him from my sister in grade 3, and have been in love ever since!

    he is breathtaking <3

  • listen to his voice resonate! breathtaking

  • I'd have to say Needle In The Hay, King's Crossing, Happiness and Waltz #2 are some of the best songs to hear live.

  • made me cry:(

  • Wonderful, beautiful, soulful, meloncholly, heartbreaking. Music for the lost and forsaken. Melodius sounds for lovers and love lost alike. His music (XO in particular) filled a small, dark, damp room on Lord Howe Island with a soft warm glow for 3 months and not once was tired, old or boring. The good die young (through the heart though... who does that? I mean, that takes some serious determination)

  • Kudos, the most thumbs up I have ever seen.

  • @leabailey84 How are you stabbed twice in the heart with no hesitation wounds and no drugs in your system. The LAPD initially ruled it suicide based on his history but labeled inconclusive pending investigation after the coroners detected foul play. LAPD has such a great track record of this I doubt anything will ever be discovered.

  • @thomxAristy Some of his music was directed toward the global elite and programs known as Bluebird and MKUltra. Not many people know this unless they were a part of it. He was slipping info through his songs. Generally those are the parts people don't understand. His death may well have been contrived.

  • @ahbitterdregs You're either high or stupid.

  • Comment removed

  • @sunhoney1 Love the comment, but he had alot of drive to make this stuff happen and im sure mymayapapaya will keep giving us new stuff for a while. The point is we all need to learn from his mistake and drive to be the best!

  • @jomosamify i wasn't asking you for personal advice. my comments trashed i'd appreciated your trashing yours to me as well, worry about what you need to learn. in the infamous words of Conor Oberst when told he mentioned his depression in that fake inter view - "no I didn't"

  • Wow. Beautiful song.

  • Elliot Smiths music puts me in a good mood... im weird like that sad that he went out the way he did

  • It's pages like this that make me wish people couldn't leave comments on youtube.

  • awesome^^ beautiful song<3 he had such nice voice...

  • Hey! I have an idea. Let's enjoy the music instead of arguing about how we spell his first name.

  • Hey! now that's a great idea.

  • WOW!!!!

    Breathtaking performance.

  • Jontamlive,

I swear to you. He may have changed the lyrics,

but if you can find the cd, its the song intitled Mud, it's about surfing in California.

  • ...It's a well known fact that this is an Elliott Smith song. That's like saying The Beatles didn't write Hey Jude.

  • buy some bob dylan cd's from the 50's and 60's when he used to do accoustic shows..before he went electric...before he went born-again...before he fell off the planet

    Elliot found that path...most haven't and won't

  • What was your point? Dylan didn't make albums in the 50's, and he is more in the public eye than ever right now. And Elliott is spelled with two t's.

  • Didn't say albums. I said cd's of shows. Go listen to the bootleg series. For someone who corrects spelling on the internet, you certainly missed a key nuance there.

Second, by falling off the planet I meant becoming so very wierd and that he's a shadow of what he used to be in some ways.

Third, correcting spelling on the internet = an announcement that you've really got no point to make and are just a petty jerk taking umbrage with what people say for the sake of massaging your ego.

  • Bootleg series there's nothing from the 50's on there, it says 61 as the earliest. And if you mean "illegal" bootlegs he didn't move to New York and start playing until the 60's anyway. And I was just wondering what your point was since it kind of came out of nowhere and made little sense. And third...I just don't like how most people spell Elliott's name wrong...would you not correct "Lead Zeppelin" or "The Beetles."

  • Zorndaman, why post lies on this song? Elliott wrote this song and every Elliott fan knows this. Stop spreading lies. The song is about his youth when he had to move away from his mother to go live with his dad. I think there is a reference to his abusive stepfather there too, 'Tell Mr Man with impossible plans to just leave me alone'.

  • lol bob704293 its perception not conception.

  • elliot smith....the greatest singer songwriter of our generation. superb.

  • I almost can't watch this, how sad.

  • What a waste!

  • TEARS...WOW his songs kept me with hope to what i guess was good enough to keep me here but then again they still do. i love his music, i'll be listening to it until i die.

  • Gorgeous. R.I.P Elliot.

  • Great song. Great musician. Great video.

  • ok is this concert in toronto or newyourk cause ive see the same video but it says it in 2 different places...someone help

  • Ok 'ChrisComics', I'm pretty sure his girlfriend would know how to spell his name. HEY! Maybe you killed Elliott?

  • You wish he'd sink to that level.

  • necro? hahahahaha.

  • My god, Kurt says one line in his "suicide" note, and they attribute it to him. I can't believe people still think he came up with that line. So I was looking up Elliotts suicide and it said in his note that he signed it "Elliot".... so i'm pretty sure his gf killed him now. Because he wouldn't misspell his own name.

  • The coroner that did the autopsy said later that it was his mistake, he spelled 'Elliot' on the report instead of 'Elliott'.

  • Such a great song.

  • I LOVE YOU

  • Man this song is like love to me,

  • thats because it is

  • none of us have seen life through his eyes, so we barely have the right to wonder why he did it, he did it, he is gone, but he still plays on

    Keep well Elliot

  • Elliott Smith RIP

  • k elliott smith deffiantely wasnt messed up at all and kurt cobien said it better than anyone else "better to burn out then fade away" soo i mean maybe he took that to heart and really belived in it is that really fucked up

  • Actually, Neil Young originally said, "it's better to burn out than to fade away" in the song Hey Hey, My My (and also in the song My My, Hey Hey, which is the acoustic version of Hey Hey, My My) on the 1979 album Rust Never Sleeps. Just a little tidbit of information for you.

  • and im saying that for the dude who said he wasnt messed up at all, hes brilliant tho, i love elliott smith

  • you are a fool

  • Interesting comment fangonk. I wonder what you really mean...he definitely was a drug addict. But I assume your comment was made solely to incite others. So what's the deal? Do you just crave attention? You might just need to change your conception of drug users.

  • honestly wdxdino, you shouldnt say things like that, the person obviously has such a great love for elliotts music, its a terrible loss, dont down talk the passion of a fan, i feel the same, he is gone, and we have his music, his music is going nowhere, lets be grateful, and not talk about how the man dies...of course we think about it, but lets just appreciate his life

  • amen to that

  • a great loss to music. hope he is jamming up there with jeff buckley and lennon

  • what a jam session would that have made. wow.

  • the comment below reads like it was written by a 12 year old girl.

dont be so selfish, elliott was great guy and excellent musician but he was also very fucked up, thats y he did it. and dont tell me hes not because people who arnt fucked up dont kill themselves =/

  • oh just relax and let people express themselves.

  • and your comment reads as if you are a sullen 13 y.o. Relax, take a breath and let people express themselves. So she seems selfish too you...who cares. I wish he were still around...oh my that makes me selfish too.

  • ELLIOTT SMITH 1969-2003 I miss you Elliott. why did you do it? You once said i will be back when you want me to. I want you to. So why are you not back? XO ELLIOTT SMITH

  • i miss you.i wanted to see you someday.

  • i just noticed the person who posted this is named jewxcore hahahah rock

  • Goodbye Elliot. We all miss you. Thanks to whoever shot and posted this. It is without a doubt my favorite Elliot Smith song.

Such a shame to lose an artist / songwriter of this calliber. I guess they all have thier own reasons but it still sucks for us still fighting away down here.

  • omg guys, he reads pitchfork!!

  • @ bolingme: loool you do what ?? This aint a dance song, this is music :D

  • I like the way this song sounds in this recording, must be quite a big auditorium. must have been cool to be there.

  • BRILLIANT!

  • We Waltz to his songs in Ballroom dance class... May he rest in peace. Wonderful Music.

  • rest in peace Elliott we love you! "I'm never gonna know you now, but I'm gonna love you anyhow" (exactly how i feel about Elliott) hb

  • Beautiful. Thanks for uploading! RIP, Elliott, the world was so much more brilliant when you were still among us.

  • sick and tired of people saying 'brilliant'

  • That's a brilliant comment. Not.

  • your mom is brilliant in bed

  • I agree that the word "brilliant" is often overused in our society; however, I would contend that its use is justified when describing Elliott Smith. Listen to his music. Learn about his innovative songwriting and recording techniques. Understand his passion for having total creative control of his work. I call him "brilliant" not because he was a musician who had the potential for greatness but died too young to achieve that potential. He was actually great.

  • no he was, but the problem is too many pseudo-indie morons say 'brilliant' now because they think they are smarter than everyone else but they usually are half-witted coxcombs, half-animate dullards. As a vice and pitchfork reader, and self described indie kid, i just find it really annoying that they can't seem to think of other adjectives that actually DESCRIBE the music.

  • well said. i completely agree.

  • judge not lest ye judge thy self ;-)

Just enjoy the tune! filters of hate dont help you love the world, they just conceal it from your own view!

  • here's an adjective to describe you:

    P-R-E-T-E-N-S-I-O-U-S

    try that on for size.

  • The above comment was meant for:
