I love Elliott Smith. He means so much to his fans. Regarding the hateful comment, you people are the antithesis of what Eliott stood for, and his fans still hold dear.
I missed meeting him by 5 minutes twice. I accept that I more than likely did not deserve to have met him. ASll my friends that met him said he was the most down to earth kat there was. Humble was brought several times......Even now he knocks me back. being from Portland only makes me more sad because he was one of us. Drinking PBRs, listening to Elliott at Clinton Street Pub from a portable discman will always be a part of my history.
I love the video for this song. Even though he doesn't quite hit the high notes, I think that just adds to his performance. It's very emotional. I like the acoustic version better than the CD version, because it's more raw.
@bcglass He hated performing live. I'm a musician and I can't even bear the thought. It's hard to bare you're soul like that, a lot harder than people give artists crdit for sometimes.
It seems as thought everyone knew they were witnessing greatness and just let it all unfold as the night went on. I'd like a cheering, raucous crowd, but I'd love it if I could shut everyone up like he did this night.
This must have been a brilliant gig to be at. This song sounds great on guitar and piano. With regard to the last comment, elliott smith died too young but still his music is testament to the fact that he kept the child alive somewhere in him til the end. No matter how old you are always remember to keep the child alive in you..thanks elliott.
Elliott was 5'7". I am 5'7" too! Although i am 15 and he was an adult. I hope i don't grow anymore just so i can be like Elliott. I just love the music and the man.
Brain chemistry sucks. It's so unfair that there are so many brilliant, beautiful people that can't see the value of their own lives, while at the same time the Earth is overburdened with over-entitled assholes who do nothing, inspire nothing, and leave nothing. Thank you for your music, Elliot.
If I saw you I would rip your face off with my bare hands. Don't ever, EVER talk that way about Elliott Smith. I'm not joking around, you shit-faced weasel
oh, elliott....he's the kind of guy who you see on the street w/a half smile, and you know he deserves a full one....it's too bad....he deserved a lot better....i guess that's why you tell people you love them
Wonderful, beautiful, soulful, meloncholly, heartbreaking. Music for the lost and forsaken. Melodius sounds for lovers and love lost alike. His music (XO in particular) filled a small, dark, damp room on Lord Howe Island with a soft warm glow for 3 months and not once was tired, old or boring. The good die young (through the heart though... who does that? I mean, that takes some serious determination)
@leabailey84 How are you stabbed twice in the heart with no hesitation wounds and no drugs in your system. The LAPD initially ruled it suicide based on his history but labeled inconclusive pending investigation after the coroners detected foul play. LAPD has such a great track record of this I doubt anything will ever be discovered.
@thomxAristy Some of his music was directed toward the global elite and programs known as Bluebird and MKUltra. Not many people know this unless they were a part of it. He was slipping info through his songs. Generally those are the parts people don't understand. His death may well have been contrived.
@sunhoney1 Love the comment, but he had alot of drive to make this stuff happen and im sure mymayapapaya will keep giving us new stuff for a while. The point is we all need to learn from his mistake and drive to be the best!
@jomosamify i wasn't asking you for personal advice. my comments trashed i'd appreciated your trashing yours to me as well, worry about what you need to learn. in the infamous words of Conor Oberst when told he mentioned his depression in that fake inter view - "no I didn't"
buy some bob dylan cd's from the 50's and 60's when he used to do accoustic shows..before he went electric...before he went born-again...before he fell off the planet
Didn't say albums. I said cd's of shows. Go listen to the bootleg series. For someone who corrects spelling on the internet, you certainly missed a key nuance there.
Second, by falling off the planet I meant becoming so very wierd and that he's a shadow of what he used to be in some ways.
Third, correcting spelling on the internet = an announcement that you've really got no point to make and are just a petty jerk taking umbrage with what people say for the sake of massaging your ego.
Bootleg series there's nothing from the 50's on there, it says 61 as the earliest. And if you mean "illegal" bootlegs he didn't move to New York and start playing until the 60's anyway. And I was just wondering what your point was since it kind of came out of nowhere and made little sense. And third...I just don't like how most people spell Elliott's name wrong...would you not correct "Lead Zeppelin" or "The Beetles."
Zorndaman, why post lies on this song? Elliott wrote this song and every Elliott fan knows this. Stop spreading lies. The song is about his youth when he had to move away from his mother to go live with his dad. I think there is a reference to his abusive stepfather there too, 'Tell Mr Man with impossible plans to just leave me alone'.
TEARS...WOW his songs kept me with hope to what i guess was good enough to keep me here but then again they still do. i love his music, i'll be listening to it until i die.
My god, Kurt says one line in his "suicide" note, and they attribute it to him. I can't believe people still think he came up with that line. So I was looking up Elliotts suicide and it said in his note that he signed it "Elliot".... so i'm pretty sure his gf killed him now. Because he wouldn't misspell his own name.
k elliott smith deffiantely wasnt messed up at all and kurt cobien said it better than anyone else "better to burn out then fade away" soo i mean maybe he took that to heart and really belived in it is that really fucked up
Actually, Neil Young originally said, "it's better to burn out than to fade away" in the song Hey Hey, My My (and also in the song My My, Hey Hey, which is the acoustic version of Hey Hey, My My) on the 1979 album Rust Never Sleeps. Just a little tidbit of information for you.

who said,
"no he was, but the problem is too many pseudo-indie morons say 'brilliant' now because they think they are smarter than everyone else but they usually are half-witted coxcombs, half-animate dullards. As a vice and pitchfork reader, and self described indie kid, i just find it really annoying that they can't seem to think of other adjectives that actually DESCRIBE the music".
