Ben told his people that they kidnapped them to recruit them, but it was actually because he needed Jack to perform surgery on him, and he needed the others (Kate & Sawyer) to convince him to do it. Ben lied and said the list came from Jacob, just so that they would follow his orders.

The "curse" never bothered him since, after he convinced himself that you make your own luck. There is no explanation why the Numbers recurred SO often in the show. It's kind of like asking why everybody was connected before the crash. They were there because they were there. The numbers were referenced at least 300 times, if you look it up on Lostpedia.

The Swan had the button, Jack was imprisoned in the Hydra, the Tail survivors lived in the Arrow for a while, Mikhail lived in The Flame, Locke and Eko found the Pearl, the greenhouse with the frozen wheel was the Orchid, the medical station where Claire was taken to was the Staff, Charlie drowned at the Looking Glass, and Faraday and Charlotte turned off the poisonous gas at the Tempest.

They were tested on their resistence and campatability with electromagnetism so that they could be sent to the orchid to turn the donkey wheel and experiment with time travel and what not. A bunch of people running around in the jungle, getting guns pointed at them by various groups of other people, vague questions followed by vague answers followed by general vagueness, then more running through the jungle, and then someone asks someone else if they trust some guy, then before they can answer the question the episoda ends by somebody slamming a door somewhere....BONGK!... and then the word LOST floats away.

They were tested on their resistence and campatability with electromagnetism so that they could be sent to the orchid to turn the donkey wheel and experiment with time travel and what not. They used polar bears so that once they teleported off the island they could survive in the desert.

@derekscage There was something like an opening door. You see Faradey's mother explains that there had been many "doors" to the island at times. That's how the Ajira flight crashed and that's why the "Black Rock" sunk (actually it didn't sunk, but anyway it "landed" on the island) and that's how all the people that have been in the island through the ages went there.
