What is fantastic here is that although they had rehearsed it a little before; and I think really just a little, as it was like that in those times.; they took the song Dolly wrote forward spontanously. So you have Dolly saying to Chet, "no, let's do the base," becasue she doesn't think she can hit the high notes at that moment. Later Chet takes it higher, and she says, "I didn't keep wanting to do that," but she hits the high note perfectly and it makes this piece a gem among gems..

Two legends.... Chet always seemed like a real country gentleman. Dolly seems like she is always fun and never taking herself too seriously. I'm sure I'm not the only Chet Atkins fan to notice that he's playing a Martin. Looks like a D-28. I saw him perform many times in person, dozens of times on TV, but never saw him play a Martin. Probably because he endorsed Gretsch and Gibson for many years. The Martin D-28 is THE gold standard of acoustic guitars.

I had the same reaction awhile back when I saw a YouTube of Chet playing "Muskrat Ramble" on a D-45 on the Porter Wagoner Show. (Vid was taken down.) And if you listen to tracks on the album he did with Merle Travis in the '70s, it sounds like he's playing a flattop dreadnought of some kind. Since Merle played a Martin (D-28 with custom neck by Bigsby) I bet Chet did too.

Look at the headstock here. The C.F. Martin logo is covered with a piece of tape. So was D-45's -- it took a lot of tape!
