I've been listening to this particular song for over a week, deeply touched. Im so glad there is an artist who actually gives a fluke about Melody!!!! love what he does, i might dare to say he's saved my opinion on "pop"... si jolie découverte :)
His phrasing, breathing, well, just everything about his delivery is such a gift to the World. His melodies stick in my mind and bring me joy all day long. The studio version of Agnus Dei takes my breath away. I've been a fan since his first album. No one like him out there performing with such joy. Love him, his sister, his mother and his father. What a family!
This guy is nonsense! ZERO! He's nothing! He's even worst than that! Public today is really fucked up and stupid! Everything he sings sounds the same!
Sorry for pissing on everyone's comments about how amazing Rufus Wainwright is, but as a composer myself, it really hits a nerve when people mistakenly attribute a masterpiece such as this to the wrong composer. Marius de Vries wrote this song, not Rufus. He only performed it. Although he does a GREAT job capturing the emotion that Marius wrote it with.
@Miraclewiizard Rufus wrote this song and has stated that it is a deeply emotional song to him. He also composed it. Obviously, everyone needs help producing and moving themes and parts around, and that's what Marius did, produce and help smooth the song out. But anyway, i'm open to being wrong (sometimes), so please let me know where you seemed to have learned this.
@Miraclewiizard I have the album this song is on - "Want One." It was produced Marius de Vries, and the insert states clearly, "All songs written by Rufus Wainwright." Not only that, but in an early documentary on Rufus, Marius talks about the songs on Want One, how Rufus cranked them out with such ease, and how fun it was to play around with them in the studio. As the "goldnight" stated in the previous reply, this song in particular is very autobiographical. He definitely wrote it.
Very Billy Joel of him. Wonderful composition and a great sample of all his different progressions in his style repatoire. I know I spelled that last one wrong. Who cares. Rufus, look me up brother, I wrote these songs 20 years ago, just waiting for the break man. Sean Lennon told me he would call, but never did. He was too busy with his girl in Chiba Mato or however you spell it. You email me dude!. Heh.
actually, what makes me love him even more is the fact that he is the only musician i can imagine that could have written something like Bohemian Rhapsody!
i tried leavinga comment didnt work try again.I love this man rufus is sheer genuis talent galore!! This is one of my favorite songs so moving love all of his songs wopuld love to see him live indeed
So close to the frequency of the Universe Musically.....If it was intentional, then it's beyond brilliant....if it wasn't intentional, then it's the most intuitive piece of music ever!
The kingdom of good (pop) songs (Andy Partridge)... Elvis Costello, Neil Hannon, Neil Finn, James Mercer, Elliott Smith, Ron Sexsmith, Gilberto Gil, William Sheller, Nilda Fernadez and Rufus Wainwright
To anyone out their who hasn't heard his Release The Stars album, get your hands on a copy and give it a listen. There isn't a dull moment on it and it gives many of those tingly feelings that shout out "QUALITY!".
I just want to note that Rufus has gathered an audience from the youngest to the eldest. I am 67 and just knocked-out-nuts about his music, his artistry, that voice, that creativity, that scope and that charm. This is remarkable talent being embraced around the world. He gives such hope for music which is original, literate, challenging, majestic and life affecting.
Try reversing that number! and i still just adore him and his music for about the past year and a half and no sign of this passion waining (no pun intended)
This song just knocks me out everytime I hear Rufus sing it. It so illustrates his brilliance at songwriting and performance but, even more, it strikes a deep chord I think with everyone who hears it.
wolvehart is absolutly right, his music, his voice, his charisma, something if not all of them do weave the most amazing magic. It is totally addictive. I HAVE to hear his voice every day, maybe somehow he has transposed his addictions onto us in the form of him and his wonderful talent?
He does something with his music that makes any addictive stuff a lower form of magic. So yes, I love this playful magic that sometimes has a message I don't quite yet understand but feel anyhow, in all parts of my body and spirit.
Although my husband has to admit that Rufus is highly talented in may ways, his singing annoys him. I can see why he would say that but I get more and more addicted to Rufus' voice and music with every song I hear. It's a marital dilemma in our household but what a sweet one it is. Thanks for feeding my addiction.
It's weird, most of my friends either LOVE Rufus or find his voice annoying...I don't get it! I would have a marital dilemma as well! lol! I"m addicted to Rufus...and I don't mind!
Oh, this song!! I saw him live a few months ago, and I think this was the first song he did...I just sat and sobbed through the first two songs...I was so overcome...he has such a beautiful voice, and presence....LOVE HIM!!!!
i saw rufus in birmingham last week. he is truly outstanding, i had goosepimples for 2 hours. rufus has a pure magnatism that even as a straight female i would love to just give him a huge cuddle he rocks my world as he brings music alive again. ps my husband and i danced our first dance to i dont know what it is on our wedding day so its very special to us...... we love rufus x
I think it's that he breathes at the right parts, and can take in enough that he's not losing it part way through. (eg: hold a note for a really long time. He doesn't run out of air, no matter how little he breathes cause he takes in the right amount every time)
This guy is incredible, both as a songwriter and performer. To correctly sing, breath control and breathing plays a big part both for phrasing (making a line all the way thru) and maintaining a pitch. he slays me, especially this song is its so beautiful.
R Wainwright is my lost brother; that is the only explanation for what I feel with this boy's work.
