  • More money = better. Keep repeating it to yourself and sign up for TGP today!

  • A toaster? LOL! For 800 bucks that thing should be able overdrive your amp AND toast your bread at the same time!

  • Nice demo Burgs, I like this kind of test. Wish I could afford a toaster, but it isn't going to happen... maybe if it guaranteed that I'd be a better player... hum?

  • sound close.... cost not

  • Prefer the toaster

  • Different things

  • With all due respect, the Porsche VW comment makes no sense. He rounded both pedals around the track and the Bad Monkey was right there with the Klon.

Some folks have more money then sense or hearing. I had a Zendrive which totally took the lows and depth from my BF Vibrolux Though it did add some great midrange lushness to my Carr Mercury While I still prefer my Timmy pedal by a hair, the Bad Monkey is a great transparent drive for cheap. PERIOD

  • Hey Guys the PGS guys did a cool shoot out on the Klon and Lovepedal's Kalamazoo, I almost prefer the Kalamazoo now. Check out their youtube of it. Good review though man, the BM isnt quite there but still sounds great!

  • Nice demo brother your daughter is a doll enjoy that while you can cause all to soon she will be a teenager and hardly notice you are even in the room, Ahhh it's tough being a dad:)

  • the BM is a tone sucker, tho you tried to make up for it in the settings .

  • @HackerGuitarist No, I was trying to get the BM to do what the Klon can do. It was just a fun experiment.

  • @HackerGuitarist Your 100% correct that bad monkey definitely kills any tone coming from the guitar!

  • I thought it was a good demo , I could not see a big difference . Really there are no bad or good ODs they just sound different and thats the players choice of what they want to sound like. The BM is a decent pedal that sounds actually quite good .

BM $35 Klon Well over $400 used I rather buy a guitar or a amp

  • Kudos to Burgs for coming out and saying that he doesn't believe in a God or the Devil.

While he may have dropped a point in someone else's esteem, he scores huge in my book.

I may worship the tooth fairy but I won't force my tooth fairy belief on anyone.

I dare all those with strong religious convictions to not force it on others.

  • @willievega The only problem with that is that nearly all religions tell that the believer is meant to go minister to others...and if with religious conviction comes happiness, the believer will willingly want to spread the belief to others. That's just how humans work...anyway the bad monkey is fantastic. I prefer it to the keeley TS9

  • I´ve ordered a Bad Monkey today! :D

  • Now that I own both, in all fairness, the BM can't achieve what the Klon does. Do another test please, and set you amp on the edge of break-up. The set the Klon's Gain at 10:00, Treble at Noon, and Output at noon. That's magic. I tried to get my Bad Monkey to do that, and you can't get the output of the BM anywhere close. The string definition on open strumming is gorgeous, and the tone muscular. When I set the BM and Klon like you have, I achieved a similar tone, but that was it.

  • @mazsenior Can't do another test, sorry, as the Klon wasn't mine and I don't have it. Perhaps you could. There was never any question that the Klon is a better device, I stated that in the info section of the video. If I could afford one and had a use for it, I would not hesitate. I may grab one of the new ones when Bill releases them.

  • @Burgerman666 Thanks. I wasn't being critical (at least I didn't mean to be), but since I didn't have a Klon at the time, I thought your comparison was a truer representation of both pedals. I guess it's like this; If you have a new Turbo Porsche and a '65 VW van, you can get them to both go 50 KMH. But step on the gas pedal of Porsche, and the VW is in the rear view mirror a significant distance back. Hope that makes sense. Your videos are great!

  • @mazsenior I hear ya, brother. Couldn't agree more, either. Thanks for writing and tuning in. Take care, Burgs. :)

  • I'd sooner take the camper van and pick up hot surfer girls, really...

It costs ten times less than the Porsche, looks cooler, is completely user customisable and there's no chance I'm going to get a speeding ticket.

I have no need to spend such a price on a car when I can be casually drivin' along in ma automobile; my baby beside me at the wheel.

    ;)

  • @NeatStar I don't think a Camper Van looks cooler than a tricked out 356 cab, circa 1960's, but to each his own. Never needed a car to impress the ladies though, as my guitar did it for me:)

  • @Burgerman666

    Honestly?? =|

I mean, sure, that guy didn't make an especially lucid point, but THAT'S your reaction!? It's not something I'm going to stop watching your demos over (unless you block me for speaking up too), but you definitely just fell a bit in my estimation.

I vote you go back to what you do best, maybe think about removing the "666" (unless you particularly like being identified w/ the antichrist o.0), and let's all just try to get along, eh.?. :S

  • @yobhsiFehT I'm not sure what/who you're referring to. What guy? I'm not going to block you from speaking up. But I will block anyone whom I regard as launching a personal attack on me or any other commentator on my channel - they are gone. I make this quite clear on the channel's front page. The 666 thing was a bit of silliness, particularly as I don't believe in god or the devil. It's too late to change, YouTube doesn't allow it, so it's stuck. Yeah, let's all get along. :)

  • Yeah dude, you and ProGuitarShop are the best pedal demonstrators on Youtube.

  • @lute760 I think there's a pretty big chasm between Andy's professionalism and setup and my own, but thanks, I appreciate the kind words!

  • @Burgerman666 Yeah, but you are showing people that you don't need a setup that costs thousands of dollars to get a great sound out of what you've got.Something that none of the other demonstrators have done.Eddie Kramer once said that with just a little talent and proper mic placement, one could record an entire album using just Shure 57s.

  • @lute760 Yep, I would agree with Eddie, for sure. It's just a matter of using what you have at your disposal to its full potential. Neil Young and an acoustic guitar would be a reasonable example.. :)

  • The Klon is better on more "mellow" settings, but at dirtier settings I think it's really difficult to tell the difference between the two judging from these clips. Cheers from Sweden

  • @Burgerman666 dude. your a BOSS!

  • Hey man have you played the JHS klon clone? They use the identical parts/values/etc that the legit centaur uses and are only $255. I played a friend's and have one being built right now.

My ocd was on ebay the day I played the JHS!

  • $700 for a fucking pedal? no pedal is worth that much, especially if it only does one thing.

  • from me ears, the klon sounds much creamier than BM.. bad monkey is dirty.. i love ur earliest clean tone, before and after boost.. uber sweet chimes!

  • I saw a local pro using a Bad Monkey, and he used it with an Orange TT with a 2 x 12 Mesa Vertical cab, playing a Strat....and it ripped! thanks for this demo. Your daughter is the 2nd cutest kid in the world....(my 10 y/o is #1....LOL)

  • @Burgerman666 haha nice one!

  • i think there pretty close actually! the bad monkey just has more compression IMHO.

  • Why do peolple put 666 in their usernames? I find it really stupid and I can't even watch a video of someone with a username like that! Just shows how immature you really are!

  • @qwecars you do know that 666 doesn't even mean the devil, right? it probably isn't even the right number.

  • @qwecars i personally think that its extremly immature to say "IM NOT WATCHING A VID JUST BECAUSE OF HIS NAME"! hahaha

seriously, you clicked on the video to see it, not see the username.

  • @qwecars 666...The Number of the Beast? You know, the song by Iron Maiden? Duh! Don't be a Doot da doo!

  • digitech crunch is better! wow

  • Nice video :)!

What kind of Patch Cables are you using between the 2 pedals? What brand?

    Thanks

  • Nice video :)!

  • I think the pricing of the Klon Centaur may be ridiculous to some, but I think there's one factor allot of people (both musicians and reviewers alike) seem to leave out, which is, the reason why pedal may cost more is because the people who create it may not have the time, resources, or man power to manufacture them, hence higher prices. Simple logic there, not discounting the quality of the pedal.

  • KLon sounds much better but for the $ mabey an amp upgrade would be better

  • how much do these toasters cost they seem overated but the tone is good...

  • @tonytoes3895 Production of the two slice version that appears in this clip was halted not long after the clip was made. They now fetch over US$700.00.

I believe a one slice version is about to be launched though, and I'm guessing it will be in the upper reaches as well. We'll have to wait and see.

  • Did the klon sound better...yes. $600 better? No way!!

    ...cute kid...

  • klon sounds much better, better harmonics, it's very audible if you listen closely, plus the bad monkey sucks mega tone when engaged, the guitar sounded almost like a dirty strat

  • Hey Burgs for future pedal A versus Pedal B demos both pedals should really be switched in and out via loops. If not due to impedance load issues or buffers or similar the pedal order could be having quite and effect on the tone of the pedals. The Klon buffer in this case would have made the Bad Monkey sound different either for better or for worse.

  • Klons suck!

  • I went to a Jeff Beck rehearsal with a Bad Monkey in hand to give Jeff as a present. He showed up with his personal Klon Centaur and he dug the Bad Monkey so much he didn't even use the Klon after that. If it's good enough for Jeffrey.....

  • Hey, nice demo.

Slightly unrelated, but what string gauge do you use ??

Also, I agree.... It does look like a poster haha...

  • @Owen666jagstang On fixed bridges I run 10-46. Anything with a Floyd gets 9-42.

  • @Burgerman666 Thanks for the reply... you get a great tone matey !!

  • Klon sounds better, more organic.

  • @marcelcruzeiro with that kind of a price it better sound better.....

  • you have to admit...

the klon is a good investment.

because when you discover that it's just a hyped up tubescreamer and want to sell it, you'll be able to sell it for twice as much as you paid for it.

  • Oh yeah. Absolutely. They're fetching upwards of $600 now.

  • Truth be told it all about how your ears feel on any given day. Some days a favored setting on any of my pedals doesn't cut it and then I plug something simple in and am blown away... 'The Man' just messes with your mind (and wallet!)

  • Both were great, but the klon is waaay too much money for such a simple pedal. No od should cost that dang much

  • That's true. But it's very good with sourdough too.

  • bad monkey sounds ok, but the klon sounds fatter on the sustain where the bad monkey thins out to much.

  • very nice demo.....thanks for posting

  • BAD monkey!! You're not supposed to sound like a KLON!

    Yep. Toaster.

  • LMAO toaster... I'm definitely calling it that from now on

  • garota bizarra

  • Klon all the way

  • Note to self: Buy up all the Bad Monkeys thus cornering the "market", I'm gonna be rich!! Ha Ha, Ha ha ha ha ha ha!!!!

    Seriously, great review!

  • Thanks man, you've just saved me £350.

I have wanted after a klon for a year or so, but you know what? I'm starting to think it's all internet hype. After all are any of the 70 drunken idiots who attend by bands gigs gonna give a shit abou the Klon's beautiful clarity? Hell no! They're just gonna keep shouting for us to play Sex on fire.

  • @chooseyourblues Yes - but the drunken ppl will never ever care about your gear anyway . In that particular case, your playing skills counts much more. The point is, you have to satisfy your need for tone first. If you're serious about your tone, you should consider a number of small things. I mean, If you play sex on fire note by note, it doesn't matter if it's a ts-9 or a shredmaster, it should sound close one way or another. All in all, I tend to please my ears first.

  • @chooseyourblues Here's an update to my earlier post. The BM did great here, heard it live 2. I just got a Klon & Compared it to my BM. NO CONTEST. I got a Klon really cheap (my lucky day). Just did an A/B test. The Klon has the best string to string note definition and touch sensitivity I have EVER experienced in a pedal. Like this vid, I got the BM close in a certain tone, but it lacked the sting defintion and touch by a mile. Double my $ to sell the Klon? It's not going anywhere.

  • @chooseyourblues

Stick to a Handwired Tube screamer.

  • what's power supply do you use in this vdo?

  • wow...so the klon is def off the list of things to try before i die...bad monkey holds it own

  • Always enjoy your demos man. Keep them coming!

  • Love the demos thanks!

  • Hey brother, this is hands down one of the best demos I have ever seen, very cool. I have always wanted to hear the Klon up against the basic OD pedals of the world.

  • Too easy, BC77. Just a bit of fun, really. How's that band of yours doing? Signed yet?

  • I am thinking of getting a Bad Monkey and noticed you put it in front of the Klon. The only thing stopping me is I've heard it changes your tone in bypass mode but I'm not hearing it here. Would love to hear what you think or from other Bad Monkey owners! Love your videos!

  • G'day! I have to 'fess up and say that I did this video for fun and to stir the pot. There's no denying that the Bad Monkey is great value for money however some may baulk at the price asked for a Klon - which is why I did the video. To answer your question though; I have not noticed any significant tone alteration when the BM is bypassed. And there are plenty of satisfied Monkey swingers out there, and the Klon army is strong, also. Thanks for watching!

  • Thank you for getting back to me about the bypass. I really like the way you do videos, as it's pretty much straight to the computer, not through a $10k amp which is going to sound good regardless of pedal. Since retiring, I use pedals strictly for adding flavor to recordings with 4 of the different Sansamps. (Thanks again!). As long as your base amp is decent sounding, it's difficult to tell a cheapie from a boutique in the Mix!

  • If you really want to 'stir the pot' throw in a Behringer TO800 and do a blind test for about a month! ;-)

  • Behringer makes two GOOD amps: Bugera 1960 and 1990. I don't like their od/ds pedals. Their delay and other effects maybe good...

  • I love my Bad monkey, I have noticed a weee weee weee weee bit loss in punch maybe. But it is so subtle. But that is something i sacrifice to get a goood booster overdrive like this one. :-)

  • I've always wondered how the Bad Monkey compares to the Danelectro TOD-1 (the "new" super awesome and cheap boost pedal).

  • The Bad Monkey and TOD are different beasts. One 'borrowed' its circuit from the classic Tube Screamer, which has a mid hump, and the other (Dano) 'appropriated' its circuit from one of the world's finest and most sought after OD's - the Tim (or Timmy) by Paul Cochrane. The Tim is almost transparent. It just adds gain to the original sound. The Dano version has a little more aggression but is basically the same. The BM has a LOT more mids, which some prefer. Different beasts IMO.

  • In my limited experience, it seems like mid-humpy (Tube Screamer) pedals balance really well with mid-scooped amps like the Princeton Reverb Reissue, and "transparent" pedals like the Timmy, OCD or Dano TOD balance well with an amp that's got plenty of midrange. What do you think Dr. Kingman?

  • Yes sir, I would agree with you. Although, Paul makes no secret of the fact that he designed the Tim/Timmy to fatten up his Marshall with his Strat. I can tell you that jacking a Tim into a Marshall is indeed a thing of beauty, perhaps moreso than showing it a Fender.

Now, where's that nurse of mine...

  • OCD is pretty balsy (loud bass range), maybe it'll make a midrange amp sound muffled?

  • Guys, please keep the discussion civil. Thanks, BK.

  • Yeah , I never claimed you said all. Maybe you should read a little closer! So guess what? You still look like the asshole. I hear what your saying that most of them spend more time tone hunting and spending money then playing, but I don't think that's a judgment call for you to make now is it?

  • tony93666, good call! Most corksniffers at The Gear Page can't play to save their lives anyways.

  • You obviously have no idea what your talking about. Chris Cornells guitar player is a member as is Josh Smith who plays with taylor hicks band. Your an idiot... haha

  • I said most, not all. I guess you're the idiot. Congrats, troll. ;)

  • Also, maybe you should look up what troll means. I'm not hating on his videos. I'm putting a dickhead like you in your place. You've got a real attitude problem.

  • Yeah, I've got the attitude problem, but you're the one spewing childish insults. Riiiiight. LOL. Grow up!

  • I would NEVER pay that much for the Klon - EVER. I don't care about trends or 'boo-teek' fashion in the least. I'll proudly keep my Bad Monkey, which I've had for about 3 years or so.

    great demos as usual!

  • Thanks for the demo man! Very good execution on a neat idea! For $900, the Klon should also cook, make the laundry and walk my dog at least...!

BTW, your daughter is a goddess!!!

  • cool video Brett! klon is all about its mids. thanks for a/b ing pedals. It help provide a reference point

  • 50% of tone is the marketing, which includes the name, how it looks, the presentation, advertising, and word of mouth. Because of this, gear videos are extremely invaluable. And TGP can screw themselves if you're getting heat from them. Bunch of cork-sniffers.

  • Comment removed

  • Awesome vid. Made me laugh to think of all the rich crappy players who buy $900 klon and pet it instead of playing them. Most gear page member no nothing about tone, but price tags and hype. Very cool ha

  • It looked better when it was gold and with the centaur on top, too...

  • I think that the damage to the pedal's image when you see such a pretty, innocent little girl trashing it is far bigger than a million TGP pages! :-)

I always had the impression that the Klon really shines when pushing an already overdriven amp, and that its simple TS duties are average... In any case, I think that here it sounds more respectful to the guitar's natural sound and a tiny bit less "transistor-y", but the differences will disappear in a band setting...

  • Lovely demo. I've heard a lot about the Klon, but this is the first decent demo I've seen. The comparison with the Bad Monkey was nice, too. Oh, and a cute intro, too. :-)

    Thanks for the demo!

  • There's no question the klon has less mid boost in the lower gain settings but once you turn the gain knobs up on both pedals I couldn't tell a difference with my eyes closed.

  • What a coincidence I was browsing your channel tonight... I picked up a used Monkey today at the local Guitar Center for US $20. I think the Klon might sound better (it's hard to tell on YouTube) but not enough to justify the price.

There's also a shootout video done by the Visual Sound folks where their Route 808 holds its own with the mighty Klon.

  • Why so big? Besides the price I think size matters a lot. What a waste of space!

  • You should do the Landgraff pedals next.

The Gear Page servers would melt down ;-)

  • Haha! Excellent idea! Got one you'd like to shoot over this way? :D

  • No, I am but a poor man scraping by on Barber and MXR pedals.

  • I hear you. My pedal purchasing days are over for a while, too.

  • I feel a lot better about buying a bad monkey. It wasn't too different from the mighty klon.

  • it does make you think. personally i prefer the bad monkey - a, because it sounds nearly identical, and b, because it is about £300 cheaper. :)

same thing with the timmy and the TOD1 - although that is a more or less identical circuit

  • Agreed with dvschsa and .. exactly, you're right. I always shrug when I see a Klon up for sale here in the Netherlands. Titles like these always crack me up; "KLON FOR SALLLLEE!!!! NOW IS YOUR CHANCE!!"

I thought the Klon was really brittle and sharp-like here whereas the Bad Monkey seemed a lot more smoother. A given though; the Klon did clean up better.

  • very expensive lol :)

  • A blind test could be pretty dangerous............

  • Yeah, Burgerman might trip over the cables.

  • the best shootout ever.

  • Woo Doggie, that Klon sounds pretty good for a toaster! ;oP

  • Righteous
