(cont'd) representation of the characters model in accordance with her movements as well as the camera mimicking the motion of the human head was ground-breaking to say the least.
3) The story is about Faith, and the world is a setting. Faith herself is the Macguffin. I think that if it was about what you said, where you deliver parcels and meet citizens, you'd talk about how all you do is deliver packages and while you meet people, you have no impact on each others lives.
I disagree with several points and completely agree with the rest:
1) I enjoyed the "Shooty-bits" with an excellently simple button-press yet frustratingly difficult to time hand-to-hand combat. The whole point was about not using guns, and using your momentum as the weapon. However, how they set-up some of the confrontations was the problem.
2) You're forgetting that at the time the player character's physical presence in the game world was fairly new, and that having an accurate (cont'd)
@teemu99 by "underground" Campster didn't mean subway stations and caves.
He ment the story depictured in the opening scenes of the game, never to be revisited again. "Underground" here being short for underground movement, a resistance movement consisting of people not satisfied or willing to accept the prevalent surveillance (read: big brother) society.
You could still have a focus on the "underground" while retaing the bright colours and open atmosphere.
It might have been worth it to point out that you don't actually need to throw yourself into combat. You can evade pretty much every encounter in the game, or at the least; avoid using a gun, Also, did you capture game footage yourself? Dude, you suck! Lol. It was kind of aggrivating to watch, but then again.. I played the game a dozen times trying to find the best possible route. Anyway, very interesting video sir. Looking forward to watching new videos.
I disagree with wanting to see the dirtier underground of the Mirror's Edge world. We have enough brown dirty sewers already -- the bright colorful clean "upper city" was much more interesting.
@teemu99 Underground doesn't mean actually underground, so not really sewers. But with no sight of the underground, bases or people, the player doesn't see what's wrong with the government. It's like V for vendetta, minus the brutality, and the ideological purity. To feel involved with the story, the player needs to know why choosing comfort was bad. And they don't, outside of intro cutscenes.
NO MIRROR'S EDGE 2 IS TOTALLY GOING TO HAPPEN YOU CAN'T TAKE THAT FROM MEEEEEE
...Though BF3 is still alright, and I think DICE is big enough these days to handle multiple projects at once. I obviously have no idea if ME2 will happen or not, but I don't think it's outside the realm of possibility.
This was awesome to listen to. Didn't think there was so much politics in this. Its sad how much money rules everything. I mean, even if Mirror's Edge was a complete flop, what would they have lost? Seriously, maybe the top execs have to take a week off of their 1 month trip to a tropical island? It certainly wouldn't of bankrupt them or something.
You didn't have to use a gun. Yes, occasionally you would have to disarm a guard or two, and there were times (too many times) where taking out the majority of the guards was the only way to finish the area, but there were also areas where you could bypass all the guards if you knew what you were going and going keep track of who was shooting where.
In fact, there's an achievement for completing the game without ever shooting a gun.
Not all of this is very accurate. I'm sorry but it does make a lot more sense to make games that are wildly popular, no matter how much you want new IP or a sequel to an under appreciated game. For one thing, if you dedicate development time towards a niche title, you're depriving way, way more people of a game than the other way around. Most of what you're doing is mind reading and telling people what they want to hear about EA, not necessarily what is true.
@luftwaffle You can make games that are popular, but you shouldn't shelve creativity in favor of money. Look at where Activision is at right now. The ONLY title keeping them afloat is Call of Duty. What's going to happen once the game stops selling? What will they fall back on?
By all means, develop for the gamers, even if it means popular games. But don't lose your focus. Those games wouldn't exist if it wasn't for them taking a risk back in the day and trying something new.
Actually, ME2 is still in development. DICE has said numerous times that they want to work on a sequel, and that they love the cult fanbase of the original. There are even rumors that they're working on it right now.
I won't blame EA for giving Battlefield 3 a lot of attention; it is a another step in its own genre. Plus I love the game (even has some Mirror's Edge elements in it like easy obstacle traversal).
But there are rumors of DICE working on Mirror's Edge 2 going around. Fans have been bashing their mailboxes for years now. Who knows what'll come around the corner.
I'm still patiently waiting on a mirrors edge sequel, I made the mistake of overlooking the game until it became a bargain bin game, got it and was blown away, I'd gladly drop $60 on a sequel.
T8QI78cOQqs go take a look at that very early proof of concept video for the game and note the "at this point faith still had a gun." Combine that with the early concept art that shows her with a gun and we proof that gun play was reduced during development. Which is counter to your argument. Unless you want to claim DICE is outright lying about all of this then one of the mains supporting arguments does not stand up. I'm sorry if this messes up your predetermined narrative. Pesky thing facts.

Really great video. Especially the first 3 minutes or so, that was a terrific intro. I disagree with a few of your points, but the only one I'll pick up on is the gun-play. This criticism always nags me, since it was entirely possible to finish the game without shooting anyone. There was even an achievement for finishing the game this way, and it was entirely achievable. I honestly think this criticism is more symptomatic of a lack of player creativity than anything else.
What I didn't like about Mirror's Edge is it felt like one long linear obstacle course. I should be able to chart my own path to my destination, not have it forced upon me with limited variations.

You're making a lot of assumptions with Battlefield 3. Battlefield is DICE's bread and butter and it's also their precious baby. Also to say that the Battlefield games are just the same ol shooter is absolutely ridiculous. EA focused less on Mirror's Edge because it DIDN'T SELL. I love that game to death, but it didn't sell anywhere near enough to convince EA that there's a market our there wanting this kind of game. BF3 was an inevitability and it's part of a very innovative franchise, don't h8
I agree with you on a lot, but in my opinion EA is still worse today than activision is. They came out with origin, seem to be destroying bioware, etc. They're actually harming the videogame industry. All activision is doing is releasing yearly sequals.
I agree with a lot of what you're saying, but maybe the reason DICE and EA aren't focusing on Mirrors Edge 2 is because the first game wasn't very good. I agree there's more money in Battlefield, and that's obviously a large factor in their allocation of resources, but typically the Battlefield games are also more fun to play.
I like Brink. You see the "underground", get to free run, and the story is amazing. Plus it's a combo of shooting timing and running and jumping, not just run for a while, then shoot these guys.
i agree with you mate, i hate it when games just dumb down games for more sales to compete with activisions, copy and paste product. Mirriors Edge combat system was terrible, the enemies can't shoot for shit so it's easier for the player to disarm a SWAT TEAM! when you're suppose to run around and avoid the enemies. Battlefield 3 could have been much better if it didn't have COD shit like heavily scripted events, and quicktime. They could have made more money if they done it right, the irony!
You are extremely well spoken, and I completely agree with just about everything you've said. Mirrors Edge was beautiful and amazing, But they could have done so much more. So much fucking more holy shit
To further elaborate: I liked the shooty bits because the only ones that come to mind are the ones at the top of the other side of the sewer, and the ones in the train station. They allowed you to strategize/plan out your attacks or who you take out and how. Too bad there wasn't much story...
Also, the Burnout games were fantastic. Regardless of whether or not they were 'original' enough to you, they completely revamped car racing games and for the better. They weren't like COD, they weren't just new track and car packs.
I tip my hat to you, good sir, for making a strong, well thought argument about the status of the game industry! Such an analysis would be difficult to find anywhere on the internet (game forums, news sites, let alone within game companies) and has taken infantile thoughts I had and shown their mature counterpart. Well done.
Did... DID YOU JUST USE A CLIP OF 'EVERYTHING OR NOTHING' AS AN EXAMPLE OF A SHLOCKY MOVIE GAME!? OH HELL NAW SON. FIRST OF ALL, THAT WAS AN ORIGINAL STORY, SECOND OF ALL, IT'S THE BEST NONFPS BOND GAME EVER.
@ShadowStrikker Seriously dude, Everything Or Nothing can be used as part of EA's turning point towards the Light Side of the Gaming Force. It was innovative at the time, very entertaining, and was the best Bond movie never made. He also lost me at the BF3 part, as Battlefield is DICE's bread and butter. It's their franchise, their big game, the one they focus the most on. BF3 is actually very good, and DICE used some techniques they learned from Mirror's Edge to make movement in BF3 fluid.
@roguea Did you fuckin play the BF3 campaign at all? Innovative, good thing about it was the Frostbite 2 engine which made the game look great. The campaign was a huge hodge podge of a few other shooters. The writing was terrible, the plot was transparent, and most of the missions seemed like their primary goal was to spotlight how great the frostbite 2 engine is. The game was terrible and the corporate interest forced into the game is obvious.
@Ianniello You may be the only person to ever play a Battlefield game for the campaign. Fun fact: Bad Company was the first Battlefield game to feature a campaign. DICE's focus is primarily the multiplayer, and that is excellent.
I absolutely loved Mirror's Edge. That's a game I finished in one sitting (it was short) and immediately played through again. I thoroughly enjoyed every second of that beautiful creation.
I don't agree with your implication that Battlefield 3 shouldn't exist, but I'm totally with you on your point that publishers need to let developers be creative and bring new ideas to the medium.
The gunplay in Mirrors Edge really dragged the game to a halt. This was a bit of a bummer, the game is amazing otherwise.
I want to see EA become what they were in the 90s again. They dominated the market then with all kinds of fresh games when they still had a creative vision. Now they're just after a buck like pretty much all publishers. It's looking like Indie is becoming the way to go these days for fresh new titles.
Most of the appeal of the game is its stunning, flawlessly clean and bright architecture. It would be a mistake to overemphasize the gritty parts of the city, get too involved in a story, or include too many humans.
One correction at 11:35: Phillip Marlowe wasn't the detective in The Maltese Falcon, it was Sam Spade. Chandler's books were much better than Hammett's :P
man, i know it's just a picture... but that one with the bigger boobs and eyes was made a japanese gamer when asked to make a Faith that appeals to them. It's VERY misleading to use it in that instance
Thank you so much for explaining exactly how I feel about Mirrors Edge. It had solid mechanics, and could have been great, but the forced gunplay and bad story really took their toll.
I definitely agree with him about most things. I didn't care for mirror's edge at first. I thought the controls didn't make sense, faith would simply not respond to button commands, sometimes for no reason at all she would let go of the edge and fall to her death, but over time the game grew on me. It was different to say the least. I disagree with the idea of removing the "shooty bits" entirely but I agree that they should never be forced. It should be optional and mostly discouraged.
@MajorSquiggles There was an achievement in the game for completing it without firing a single shot. And there were actually only a couple of places in the game where engaging the enemies was unavoidable. Most of the game you could just run past the enemies or take a different path to avoid them altogether.
Really interesting video, the last video game i remember having a 2 world thing was Metro 2033, with the underground base with poor people and cold nuclear winter outside.
I never watch videos like this because they're mostly about crying fanboys with no actual facts in them. But you! You make me want to hope for a better gaming future again. You really know a lot about how not to make games and the importance of knowing your responsibility as a publisher. I really appreciate your thoughts on the gaming industry and I hope you will get a lot of attention. I will do my best to make sure of this. May I ask what your job is, if anything game related?
@grungeflow Same here, this guy is one of the calmest person to rant on video games ever. It makes me feel sort of sad that the entire video game community is immature jerks that are usually elitist or fanboyantly(no idea what this word i made was) blind.
@BlitZWTF Medal of Honor was 1) Not DICE's game, 2) Would not have taken time away from Mirrors Edge 2, 3) Was not DICE's response to Call of Duty.
BF3 was not just another "CoD Killer", it was a long awaited sequel to BF2. He conveniently leaves out the Bad Company games, because that hurts his point. DICE makes BF games, always.
I don't know if it has already been mentioned but Mirror's Edge didn't break new ground with its core design of dynamically flowing through a 3d environment in a first person view as quickly and as skillfully as possible.
Quake 3 Defrag beat them to it and is still being actively played and perfected.
Thanks for giving this flawed but intriguing little game a nice analysis. If we can appreciate experimentation in the medium and point out flaws in a constructive way, we could end up with new breeds of vastly superior games. Like Mirror's Edge 2. Which will definitely be made. Someday -_-
I really liked Mirror's Edge, especially the time trials. However in this video I have to admit that after saying soemthing along the line of !something big, loud and dumb", following it up with that awesome BF3 theme... It got me more excited about BF3 than about a potential Mirror's Edge sequel.
Because I'll be damned if BF3 doesn't sound incredible. But let's hope Dice do get to make ME2 now. And add a mode where you're actually impervious to bullets if you're running in the "flow".
"Visionary artists" can ruin their own games just as much as meddling executives. Just look at Metal Gear Solid 2, GTA 4, or the Super Mario Galaxy games.
"Ultimately it's more profitable to do something popular than to do something good." That is so very true. I'm gonna be optimistic and say there's loads of impressive, inventive and inspired games out there, but as long as people don't know the difference between mediocre and exceptional, we're stuck with the same cash-cows.
I personally think that Mirror's Edge failed. I found that it was jarring, hard to navigate (In that "My controls are broken" way rather than the "How can I best make this jump?" way), as well as being too short . However I greatly respect it. It DARED. That's the problem with pretty much the entire game industry: Production costs are so high that making an experimental game and failing could make you go bankrupt. There's no risk taking. To Mirror's Edge, I say: Thank you for daring to fail.
I'm not sure I follow the transition of BF3 being responsible for ME2 being backburnered because EA thought DICE would be good at making BF3. Battlefield, the entire franchise, is DICE. EA had to chose DICE for BF3 because BF1942, BF2, BF2142 and all the minor ones in between were made by DICE. Furthermore DICE always said there would be a BF3.
A well-spoken video, but I disagree that Battlefield 3 is a case of "running an IP into the ground," as you imply at 14:58. BF3 brings decent innovation (the Frostbite 2 engine) and revitalization (return of BF2/2142-scale maps on PC) to the franchise. [The single player is a shameful bid to compete directly with COD in an area that was never BF's strong suit, I admit.]
Hopefully this is just the "stable money" period of a cycle that will see more fresh, risky IPs out of EA in a few years.
BFBC2 ran the BF series into the ground (2142 had everyone's favourite mode, Titan Mode).
BF3 finished it off, flashy visuals doesn't make a great game and the gameplay itself is subpar at best, massive input, laggy in general, very arcade-like (as he showed), and is only EA cashing in on the shooter franchise.
Crysis 2 also had flashy visuals, but at least the gameplay was decent.
admittedly, Mirrors Edge was already losing ground far before EA decided to start siphoning resources off for BF3. Also, I think that DICE could improve the gunplay. The issue I had with it was that it forced you to stop and beat up guys. If Faith was able to have a simple pistol and perform some stealth moves, she could do some much cooler things. If she could do what you say, and perform cover fire, popping off a few shots and bolting, I wouldnt mind
@ovendonkey186 Actually, you can run past everything except the fight in the container ship, because of the damn huge cranks on the doors. Even in the big server room, you can just run around and let them shoot up everything for you without actually fighting anyone. - I went through the game the first time I played it without firing a shot. It really is how it's meant to be done.
@zankokujin Yeah, I was talking about the second fight in chapter 7, The Boat. I didn't include the server room because it's much, much faster to just use the guns instead of letting them shoot the servers and then running past. I was talking from more of a speedrunning point of view. Everywhere else it's faster to just ignore all the fighting
I think "shooting" is neccessary for ME, as you are fighting a police state - it has been established that Faith isn't a pacifist and perfectly willing to shove a policeman off a skyscraper if she needs to. But, two things could be changed. First: All or almost all fights should be avoidable alltogether. Many were in ME1, but many weren't (like the server room). And: As soon as Faith acquires a gun, she switches to FPS protagonist mode. Why? Why can't she do some cool run&shoot gameplay?
I love your reviews, though to call them "reviews" would be an insult. Everything you say makes sense; you have a unique yet ingenious way of elaborating your opinions.
Though I enjoyed this, you didn't seem to touch on how evil EA actually is today, making bioware a label, the constant origin mess going on, etc. How many weeks old is this?
I love your video, first of all. One thing, though: I agree with you that the gunplay is flaccid and weak. Try playing through the game without using guns. Makes the combat so much more fun. There are a lot of really neat moves you can pull off that flow with your parkour so you barely lose momentum. Nice commentary.
Subscribed, amazing analysis on deeper prospect. Please keep doing more.

ShadowStrikker 1 month ago
@ShadowStrikker Seriously dude, Everything Or Nothing can be used as part of EA's turning point towards the Light Side of the Gaming Force. It was innovative at the time, very entertaining, and was the best Bond movie never made. He also lost me at the BF3 part, as Battlefield is DICE's bread and butter. It's their franchise, their big game, the one they focus the most on. BF3 is actually very good, and DICE used some techniques they learned from Mirror's Edge to make movement in BF3 fluid.
roguea 1 month ago
@roguea Did you fuckin play the BF3 campaign at all? Innovative, good thing about it was the Frostbite 2 engine which made the game look great. The campaign was a huge hodge podge of a few other shooters. The writing was terrible, the plot was transparent, and most of the missions seemed like their primary goal was to spotlight how great the frostbite 2 engine is. The game was terrible and the corporate interest forced into the game is obvious.
Ianniello 1 month ago
@Ianniello You may be the only person to ever play a Battlefield game for the campaign. Fun fact: Bad Company was the first Battlefield game to feature a campaign. DICE's focus is primarily the multiplayer, and that is excellent.

MajorSquiggles 1 month ago
@MajorSquiggles There was an achievement in the game for completing it without firing a single shot. And there were actually only a couple of places in the game where engaging the enemies was unavoidable. Most of the game you could just run past the enemies or take a different path to avoid them altogether.

Someday -_-
silentlambda 1 month ago
I really liked Mirror's Edge, especially the time trials. However in this video I have to admit that after saying soemthing along the line of !something big, loud and dumb", following it up with that awesome BF3 theme... It got me more excited about BF3 than about a potential Mirror's Edge sequel.
Because I'll be damned if BF3 doesn't sound incredible. But let's hope Dice do get to make ME2 now. And add a mode where you're actually impervious to bullets if you're running in the "flow".

"Ultimately it's more profitable to do something popular than to do something good." That is so very true. I'm gonna be optimistic and say there's loads of impressive, inventive and inspired games out there, but as long as people don't know the difference between mediocre and exceptional, we're stuck with the same cash-cows.

TheAzureSky1 2 months ago in playlist Errant Signal
I personally think that Mirror's Edge failed. I found that it was jarring, hard to navigate (In that "My controls are broken" way rather than the "How can I best make this jump?" way), as well as being too short . However I greatly respect it. It DARED. That's the problem with pretty much the entire game industry: Production costs are so high that making an experimental game and failing could make you go bankrupt. There's no risk taking. To Mirror's Edge, I say: Thank you for daring to fail.
masterplusmargarita 2 months ago

Hopefully this is just the "stable money" period of a cycle that will see more fresh, risky IPs out of EA in a few years.
masterchef87 2 months ago
@masterchef87

@forumrabbit Well, it seems that we disagree about the progression of the BF franchise and I'll leave it at that.

admittedly, Mirrors Edge was already losing ground far before EA decided to start siphoning resources off for BF3. Also, I think that DICE could improve the gunplay. The issue I had with it was that it forced you to stop and beat up guys. If Faith was able to have a simple pistol and perform some stealth moves, she could do some much cooler things. If she could do what you say, and perform cover fire, popping off a few shots and bolting, I wouldnt mind

techboy132 2 months ago
The gunplay really doesn't pose any problems once you realize there are only 2 fights in the entire game you can't just run past.
ovendonkey186 2 months ago
@ovendonkey186 Actually, you can run past everything except the fight in the container ship, because of the damn huge cranks on the doors. Even in the big server room, you can just run around and let them shoot up everything for you without actually fighting anyone. - I went through the game the first time I played it without firing a shot. It really is how it's meant to be done.
zankokujin 2 months ago
@zankokujin Yeah, I was talking about the second fight in chapter 7, The Boat. I didn't include the server room because it's much, much faster to just use the guns instead of letting them shoot the servers and then running past. I was talking from more of a speedrunning point of view. Everywhere else it's faster to just ignore all the fighting
ovendonkey186 2 months ago
Pretty smart. Those dislikes are probably BF fans.
MagicGuigz 2 months ago
Not sure what you're talking about with the shooting/action bits. I beat the game without ever firing a shot.
QuixoticRaskol 2 months ago
I think "shooting" is neccessary for ME, as you are fighting a police state - it has been established that Faith isn't a pacifist and perfectly willing to shove a policeman off a skyscraper if she needs to. But, two things could be changed. First: All or almost all fights should be avoidable alltogether. Many were in ME1, but many weren't (like the server room). And: As soon as Faith acquires a gun, she switches to FPS protagonist mode. Why? Why can't she do some cool run&shoot gameplay?
