Al qaeda wasn't in Iraq before we invaded because Saddam and bin Laden were bitter enemies. Hussein's republican guard would have wiped out bin laden's cowards if they smelled their stench, but they were not there. Understand this war, like most in history, are about geopolitics. It was an idiotic war to begin with, but we're in there now and might as well clean up the mess. Once the Iraqis get their act together, we can focus our great military on al qaeda (which has grown) and others.
