Black Music ? and I'm a White 67 year old drummer -- just cause it is not on the top 40 - then you ain't lookin hard enough -- so to you rap is all there is to black music --thats like saying there was no Soul in the 60's cause of the beachboys or the Beatles -- and no jazzrock in the 70's cause of Disco Black music ?? WTF --there is no such thing --- Music is music --- it has no ethnicity --- bet I can name some groups you think were BLACK and weren't ---so who cares --good shit is good shit
As old as I am --- you still have that magic for me -- I Love you -- "I Got TO Go I Got TO Go I Got TO Go --- We met in 1979 at the Beverly Hills before it burnt down Covington Kentucky --yes we talked about a Jerk on the front row !
What the hell is black music? Fell so hard..WTH are you talking. I didn't know there was such a thing as black music because I think we covered all aspects. What is this person talking about? Cobain...you need to research and get the facts before you post.
I loved this sweet song so much. I knew this song by heart and never forgot it. It is so good to see it here. It is still good. It is about understanding what you value and growing up.
There is a good explanation as to why most celebrities and political leaders eventually become as*es. They have had to basically dehumanize their emotions because so many people call them crazy or dreamers who will never "make it." This is especially true about "Hollywood." When they do "make it big," they take their resentment and anger out on others by becoming arrogant and narcissistic. There is simply too much talent out there. I have heard so many great artists who never make it. It's sad.
This lady puts soul into her music and is gracious enough to share it with us. I can't carry a note but that gives me the opportunity to enjoy people who do have talent. BTW - when Gladys Knight sings, you can understand each word. Thank you to a great performer!!
Guys, if you check out the selection of the 500 most beautiful songs of all time made by Rolling Stone magazine, you'll find out that the biggest part of those songs were made in '60 and '70... They said it all !! What happened to music? But most of all, what happened to listeners? So sad. People can take any shit if you add a little bit of bling bling.
Ahhh... if I were hurled to a distant planet 100 zillion miles away, captured and incarcerated by aliens, allowing me to listen to 1 earth song per day, this is the first song that would spring to mind. And, I never really understood why... clearly it is the melancholy enveloped in a song sung so tremendously.
Black music has fallen so damn hard today, right to the bowels of the worst sewer going. The female singers whore themselves and the male ones make themselves out to be convicts or drug addicts. Absolutely no respect there, and they all get pissed if they get "dissed".
@JamesTKirkCobain Chile... PREACH! I couldn't have said it better! Black music (and talent for that matter) is the only genre that has fallen so far from grace!
@JamesTKirkCobain Great comment. I could not agree more. This is classic good listening music. Unlike the porn stars that call themselves musicians today.
@JamesTKirkCobain You are right, if you only look at the mainstream artists, but there are alot of talented young creative black musicians fighting to make their mark. I blame the big music companies. Nowadays if you're young poor and black, living in the ghetto and you're not a talented athlete, just pick up a mic and say some silly shit. If thats gonna get you and your family out the hood. Well who can argue with that...
@JamesTKirkCobain Its not just black music but music in general. Britney Spears, Lady Gaga, Christina Aguilera and keisha all whore themselves also. The talent isn't there because record companies go after image and sex appeal. Thats why there is so much auto tuned garbage on the radio right now. This is the first time in my life that I don't even bother to turn on the radio anymore. I just remember the good days with my mp3's and cd's
@JamesTKirkCobain in all honesty, there are plenty of black artists that are not sellout commercial stars... for examples there is Vivian Green, Jill Scott, Erykah Badu, etc.
@JamesTKirkCobain Hang on a second...isn't that what white racists said about black music in the 40s 50s and 60s? Is it not true that in the 50s Elvis was being accused of playing 'the devil's music'? Don't get me wrong, I'm no huge fan of gangsta rap or Jamaican ragga, but it seems that which ever musical direction black music takes, regardless of the decade, it is criticised. Black music will never win everyone's positive opinion, but, like it or not... IT WINS !
@JamesTKirkCobain The problem is that they are expressing the way they feel -- they can't help the way they feel. But you express my feeling about their whining entertainment, void of solutions, void of hope & character. I hope they get pissed by being dissed, because with whatever pride they have inside... they can transform into something better. It is sad that the bar was placed so high.; they can't improve upon. Imitation is the highest form of flattery -- and they ought to copy.
@JamesTKirkCobain ... Try listening to artist like Leandria Johnson, Kim Burrell, Karen Clark Shield, Kelly Price, Donnie McClurkin, Marvin Sapp, and Marvin Winans. These artist are still standing and upholding the high standards of black music. The entire R&B industry needs to be shut down and restarted. They are placing image over talent these days. There are a few who are still doing great.
I love it, though I have no idea why a black person wants to go back to place where Jim Crowe is still alive and well and they will never vote for a black man. I am British so what do I know?
@ocean65 - So black people should stay away from Georgia? Wouldn't that just be empowering the racists? In America, the majority still rules (or so they say). As a white guy, I say that a black person should be able to go wherever he/she wants to go. And I'll go there along side of them ... makes no never mind to me. :o)
Check out Jim Weatherly - All-American quarterback turned singer-songwriter who wrote and recorded many of Gladys Knights biggest hits, Midnight Train, Neither One Of Us, Best Thing That Ever Happened, The Need To Be etc
In the context of today's so-called music, words can't describe just how good this is. "Classic" is a much overused word but perfectly suitable for this song. Thanks for sharing.

@masterkudjo OMG I soooo love this girl...my No.1 now...I always heard people talk about her but now I understand....I can't watch enough of these posts...If only I had a time machine I would travel back and follow this girl everywhere she went like a little puppy dog...what bliss to watch and listen to her....thank you so much to the people who are posting all this footage and to you tube for allowing me to discover the Empress of Soul....the 'Goddess' in my view...
I saw an episode of Houe last night where House, Chase and Foreman were singing this song karaoke-style! It was classic. I've had it stuck in my head ever since, so I had to listen to it!
I definetely was a weird kid in Mexico in the seventies and early eighties, I used 2 love this stuff (I still do) rather than the music directed 2 children (Timbiriche, Parchis) like the rest of "normal" kids did. I still remember the odd look in their eyes.
I just saw Gladys Knight give her testimony with her choir last week. She was awesome, and so was her group. She's Mormon, better known as the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints.
Kelly Rowland Looks so much like Gladys when she was younger "AND" Donna Sommer.... She could play their life stories and it'd be so believable because of how much she looks like them
i love this song its the best song ever that i heard i made a CD TO PUT IN MY CAR i never heard anyone say she has a restaurant down there because my family live there and they never heard of it before so weird
They say in order for us younger gerations to love the older music the parents had to listen to it in the home wrong I love this and my parents were hard core Country and Elvis fans.Till I came along and change it all with my love of all kinds of music.
This amazing performance by Gladys Knight and the Pips is at the 16th Annual Grammy Awards on March 2, 1974 at the Hollywood Paladium on Sunset Boulevard. She absolutely tore it up that night! Thanks for the wonderful memories of a truly gifted singer!

I definetely was a weird kid in Mexico in the seventies and early eighties, I used 2 love this stuff (I still do) rather than the music directed 2 children (Timbiriche, Parchis) like the rest of "normal" kids did. I still remember the odd look in their eyes.

One of my very favorite songs and singer in the whole wide world!! Those were the classy, good old days. I miss them. Thanks so much for this. =]

This is an excellent performance! Although I was told by another poster that the Midnight Train has a totally different meaning to what we all think!

hey, I had never seen this great performance of "Midnight Train" - funny to see the Pips so relaxed, but Gladys looks awesome in that pink suit!
