this is my favourite song he sung on the first album I bought in 1965 and although I got some records after that this is my treasure fan of his always.
Well what a year so far, nearly lost a limb, got mugged and have no money now and a slashed open hand, got a nice little pressie from my (as of five mins ago) ex-girlfriend, yeah, thats the end of me.
The greatest singer since Frank Sinatra, and the English speaking world's Jacque Brel. He's been breaking my heart every time he opens his mouth for more years than i care to remember.
Probably the most magnificent voice we shall ever hear from a popular music artist -it has just about everything. This song from Randy Newman was tailored for Scott's rich and subtle tones. Brilliant Guidofski, thanks.
John Maus Walker actually picked this song for Scott to sing on this album because he said it was perfect for Scott's voice and it was very demanding piece.
Always been a favourite, my husband said only the other day about noise next door and I told him what do you expect like the Walker Brothers said ' The walls are much too thin' He just looked at me, I think he's fed of hearing about all the Walker Brothers, he'll after put up with it after all I loved Scott long before I met my hubby. And Scott will always be No.1 for me.
My older half-brother gave me an album from them written in 1965, I remember this song so clearly. Sounds something like the style of Tom Jones&Ingleburg Humperdink also back in those days. Thanks for posting.
I just got goosebumps all over. This is one of the finest songs and voices ever. Big sis was and is a huge fan and I grew up listening to him in the 60's. Wonderful.
Guidofski, thanks for all you do. I have re-discoverd Scott, and have thoroughly enjoyed his wonderful versatility all over again. I remember when "Kathalene" was released on a 45, under his real name of Scott Engel, and I bought it when I was about 13 years old. It's still in my record collection. Well, I recently went to Amazon and ordered every one of his available CDs, mainly based on the songs you have posted for us. What an enjoyment it's been to listen to this talented artist.
Very different from other versions - as ever, his voice could melt butter. Not as raw as the PJ Proby version, and Dusty's version was also fine, but this just edges the others foe me, Sheer class. Thanks for posting.
It took courage and good taste; at that time the progresive Randy Newman was not very popular (exept for my country Netherlands) this song stands out as one of the best ever written, very well sung by Scott Walker
the overcooked good looks and then the final disgust with "show business", and sinatra always waiting just off stage- could have made it in vegas, and yet put it all behind him... amsterdam in the sixties... changed people.
@arniegirls1 Hello Arnie, are u the guy in the SW doc 30 Century Man? If you are could you photocopy some interviews Scott gave round Scott3/Scott4/til the band comes in/nite flights and post it over to Sweden - I pay of course
........I just commented but anyway I got to tell you that I'm addicted. This song keeps playing inside my head all day long and I had some troubles in the school, for I couldn't concentrate on what the teacher was saying - Scott's beautiful, strong voice kept coming and coming! Ah and now I'm listening to this AGAIN and AGAIN, I should be sleeping but well, who needs to sleep anyway, ha ha, I guess I'll just listen to this all night and spent the next day as a zombie :D
@psykoosi Thanks for sharing your thoughts, loved both your comments. I'm not surprised to hear you're addicted to this, it really casts a spell... "Scott Walker Turned Me Into A Zombie" - now there's a good George Romeroesque title for ya! :D
@guidofski I think I'm addicted, too. I'm sure you'll see all the likes I've posted. I also happen to agree with the statement: "Scott Walker Turned Me Into A Zombie". hahaha! It's TRUE! I've been sitting here listening to him for the past few hours, off and on.
@psykoosi I find 'Thanks for Chicago Mr James' has a similar effect on me. I always seem to wake up in the morning with one of his songs in my head. Is there treatment for this????
First I fell in love with the Dusty version and now after hearing this.... Well, I don't know which one I like better! Should I know that? Both of the versions are just great, but still very different. The Dusty version seems more sad and desperate to me, and that's why this version of Scott is much more comforting somehow. And that voice, wow!
Interesting people talk about Scott and Dusty in the same sentence - both their songs from this era were arranged by the combined genius of Wally Stott, Ivor Raymonde and produced Johnny Franz. Their contribution to popular music cannot be overestimated.
This must be the very best series of Scott images anywhere on video... plenty of downright pretty, handsome and happy ones. You're the king, Guidofski! As for the singing : there's only one Scott and one Dusty ! Best singers ever...
I think you're absolutely right! I went to IMDb to check the Randy Newman songs used in movies and TV and apparently no one's thought of it yet... what a shame...
thanks for that info never thought of checking it that way before perhaps one day i will put it in a movie about me!along with on your own again, perfect.
My absolute favorite Scott Walker cover....it's the song that made me his slave. Scott sang about five Randy Newman songs.....thanks for this. Nice to see it played with his handsome face.
I love Scott but everyones version just seems Pale when Compared to PJ PROBy's. It's such an outstanding version and it's on youtube. You really should check it out !!!
I just did; it's really good, the heartbreak really comes through... plus I liked the fact that the lyrics were slightly different. Thanks for the tip, Stuart! :)

I wouldn't want to live without either Scott's or Dusty's versions (but 'Dusty in Memphis') is one of the GREAT albums of all time (IMHO).

Hot song. A marvellous dreamy atmospheric cadence. An all too familiar scenario. Strictly for the mature listener.

Many thanks......

Wow. After 40 years, Scott's voice still sends chills up and down my spine. I don't know another singer who can do that.
This piece is one of my favorites, even though Scott would probably disavow this type of material today.
janicead 2 years ago 2
I agree, he certainly would stay away from this sort of thing today, but I hope that won't stop anyone from enjoying the 'old' Scott!
And yes, the voice still blows any competition away...
Thank you, Janice. :)

What's not to love about Scott. Eveytime I hear him, I think I love him better than Sinatra. I never heard this before, but I love
it.
