BEAUTIFUL photographs of the Maori women, and great singing by Marie Te Hapuku.
Tears of joy in my eyes and memories come up when I hear the beautiful love song. Long ago I stayed for quite a while in Aotearoa… In 1985 I have heard in Kaitaia in a marae the song for the first time.
You do not have to be a New Zealander to love Maori music, just someone who lived and worked there and feel homesick sometimes for Dunedin and the NZ way of life. God bless the people of Christchurch wish we could help in some way.xxx
Forget the other opera singers and pretenders - this is the real Pokarekare Ana. Sung from the heart, simply and beautifully and with feeling. You'll never hear it sung better...
Warning: If you're a New Zealander living overseas, it's gonna bring tears to your eyes [sigh]...
@neilmak sorry dear!!! But I have to disagree with you...I've never ever heard this song sang more beautifully then Two cousin in Rotorua NewZealand they sing this song so Beautifully.. they just take your breath away.. I even got their names i was so impressed Whare and Awhi
The facial expressions of the subjects in the photos and the music match each other perfectly and are melancholic. I don't know the meaning of the song. I enjoyed it.
Oh Marie.... I cannot tell you how beautiful this is. I'm sitting here and cannot sleep. Drinking warm milk and honey and what that does to my taste buds the sound of your beautiful voice does to my ears. LOVE YOU!
So beautiful :) gives me goosebumps and pride to be a kiwi

The waves are breaking against the shores of Waiapu
My heart is aching for your return my love
Oh my beloved come back to me my heart is breaking for of love for you
I have written you a letter and enclosed with it my ring
If your people should see it then the trouble will begin

Oh my beloved come back to me my heart is breaking for of love for you
My poor pen is broken my paper is spent
But my love for you endures and remains forever more
Oh my beloved come back to me my heart is breaking for of love for you
The sun's hot sheen won't scorch my love
Being kept evergreen by the falling of my tears
Oh girl Come back to me I could die of love for you
