Just played this for the first time myself. Actually found Armadillo a lot tougher than Octopus, actually had a very hard time against Armadillo, before I figured him out.
I used a totally different strategy againt Octopus though: I slided back and forth spamming only normal shots. Some destroying his missiles, most of them hitting him. I did have my armor from Chamelon's stage though, but I didn't lose much life at all, as I destroyed most of the missiles that was going to hit me.
I remember looking at an old Nintendo Power that showed armorless X fighting the Chameleon sub-boss on the highway level, which had a blue sky. X's life bar had a yellow "P" instead of the blue "X."
Why didn't you use any of the bosses weakness at them?

@batyoung I do in the rematch in sigmas levels. I like showing how to beat them without the weakness.
