@MoGiMaL and as for the ooo factor i felt vignola was boring, do you know how may players play that stuff as well as him? did he make any of it popular?. Look at the things that tommy made famous, the way he plays harmonics for 1. You cant compare them because they're both top drawer but you can say that 1 changed the way people play acoustic and brought something new to the table
Django would have loved it! These two blokes complement each other so much, each is a glove of the other. I can't believe anyone could dislike this, surly if you didn't like it, you would just click off. To not like the tune or style of music is one thing; but what's not to like in this presentation? I've heard tunes played by Django, that I didn't particularly like but I loved the way he played them. I have to agree with SkyMiKL.
I agree that this doesn't have the "gypsy touch" so much, but the music is played with commitment and passion and Manouche-level chops. And it might be noted that a lot of the gypsy European players pride themselves on their American influences. So, maybe, for an American and an Australian, this could be thought of as a legitimate fusion of the styles. And it sounds good. And the players interacted and played at the peak of their styles, giving and taking in wonderful way.
Anrthon1 I don't know anything about guitar playing, but seeing that these two are two of the best in the world is too easy. I can listen to them 24 hours a day. What talent.
the gypsy, django touch is all gone. this has americanized long island jazz all over it. which is ok. the true version is played by the fellas from europe, those being the rosenbergs, romane's trio, etc.
This isn't TE's nicest playing with FV, but that said, it's nice. I don't think anyone can complain about his tone since the recording quality is poor and tinny.
Just go over to the Woodsongs archive and watch the vid of these two playing and the quality of sound and playing are far better, and more representative of their palying together.
It seems the people who like to complain as though they're the experts we should all listen to (lol), have never seen TE play live.
@gluebum13 Wow thanks for that recommendation for Woodsongs. Lots of quality concert videos there. I'm watching the Emmanuel/Vignola set there which is at least an hour long im guessing. At the beginning of Swing 39/42, I was stuck... two guitars is one thing, but when you throw in the upright bass, it all comes together... I love strings.
Actually I am French American and and I do play and understand the guitar. But the difference between Myself and you is that I understand what is transcendental and mundane and you do not and therefore you are an ass.
Very nice guys, great use of your personal feel for the great song Django wrote. If Django was still here I think he would be amazed at all the passion for his songs...
aint better different you know tommy is a fingerstyle guitarist and frank plays alot of gypsy its njust a change to a different style i have it everyone does what they do best there is no better when it comes to different styles but there is a better one in their style and tommy is the best in fingerstyle but frank ist the best in gypsy thats jimmy and stochelo rosenberg but think i made my point gr....
I can't believe how obtrusive Emmanual is. Every time he plays with someone else he doesn't allow the other players to breathe, he is right up on them. It's so annoying to watch him.
I don't expect those who are asses to understand my point here.
Dont judge it by just this video or other youtube videos. I was at their concert last night in London and there were many songs where Tommy played just the rythm part for others to play solo parts.
How long have you been a musical idiot, check the concert sell outs, the acclamations from Chet Atkins and anyone who mattered...obviously your from a country where accordion is the lead instrument. I can't believe you actually typed that shit.
I don't think we should say just who is better here as they both are amazing guitarist. If we wanted to compare then we could ask who is the more well rounded player then Tommy would win as he can play pretty much any style out there. He performance here was a little much for the song but that's Tommy. He loves to have fun with songs. His tone is a bit bright here also but don't forget Tommy suffers from hearing loss due to having yellow fever as a child.
I do love tommy, he's fantastic. But as someone who plays gypsy jazz, i cnt say i enjoyed this a great deal. Very intresting to watch. I of course realise that a song like this is about the clouds and how they change all the time, but i really didnt think alot of the licks tommy was playing fitted, (to me any way) im sure every one has a different biew on this. But i think if you want to hear this at its best, see Stochelo rosenberg, or Joscho stefan. I hope no one takes this in the wrong way.
I have to agree that Tommy lost the "feel" on this cut, but he CAN play this kind of music well. I saw him two nights at Orange Blossom Junction, and the second night I thought I was listening to Joe Pass play acoustic guitar. The subtlety was EXACTLY what's missing here. Maybe he needs 106 degree heat to "slow down." LOL
TE's tone is irritatingly bright; I far prefer FV's. I'm biased in that I own a Thorell FV model but I still think TE's tone is too edgy for this song.
OK, yeah Tommy does show off a bit. I think what he mainly is doing is just showing how much fun he is having while he's playing, and just tries to make it fun for the listeners too.
Oh, there is no competition here. This is two of the worlds greatest guitarists having fun as friends. They really are from two different schools, so to me it's hard to say that one is better than the other. They each excell at their individual style. They have REAL personality and style in their playing-that's what makes them each among the best! Of course on top of their virtuosity.

I wonder what age brianfurchner and haladhara1 one are. Most people who are professionals over the age of 12 don't engage in such childish bickering.

Seems like this song has evolved into a very slow ballad. Started out in 1940 as a medium foxtrot. Think I liked it better that way.

i personally dont like this. for some reason tommy emmanuel annoys me,
i feel this version is over the top, the Nuages i know is a simple calm relaxing jazz melody
this just seems erratic and seeing how many seperate notes you can possibly fit into the original pattern
