The idea, at least from the reference point of the Bible, is that Adam and Eve were more "pure" than we are today. So, they didn't have the issues of latent genetic defects compounding via offspring the product of incest. I think the Bible's all BS, but this is a common apologist's position.

He asked why we were allowing a couple hundred scientists, versus the millions of faith and religious teachers, to give us our version of reality.
