Why is it sometimes so hard to tell the difference between kurd and bayati and sometimes not? I mean in this samai it's obvious it's kurd but sometimes especially when kurd is done vocally it sounds so much like bayati. Is it because the E-bemol in Kurd is actually played a little higher, like in Hijaz? I think, maqam kurd has different intonations depending on the region. I think the 3rd note in syria and gulf countries, is played lower than in egypt or turkey.

Well, I disagree on a couple of issues here m03ez. Aside from the quite distinct feel Bayyat gives from Kord, the E bemol in Kord is actually lower and not higher (as in Hijaz). This also applies to other Maqams such as Nahawand, which gives the E bemol a more asserting effect, if you would. Now, most music schools go even by a "lower E half bemol) for the Bayyat (say than in Rast or Sikah), yet some other schools actually raise that note more than in Rast (but never than Sikah !)

Yes I thought so. So the E half bemol in bayyati is played a bit close to the E bemol in Kurd, that's why some confuse the two. BTW have you heard Ali Mahmoud's famous Azan?? I believe the second Hayya Ala Salah is in Kurd. Also his Qasida, "Ana Fil Hubb" is in Kurd. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Well, we're not on the same page this time m03ez, for 2 main reasons. If you consider that the E bemol in Kord is lower than the "regular" (if you would) E bemol, it will be found lower by a "Koma". Now, generally an E "half" bemol is "higher" than E bemol (by ~1/4 tone). To the ear, this difference is quite noticeable. I mean, once you hear the Sikah note, it just changes everything.....it has a different soul, and adds up a very unique flavor to the melody. It's that "Sharqy" touch :)

I totally agree with you. I can actually feel the sharqy soul in maqams like Bayati, rast, and sikah. It's a different world, I understand you. I like to classify the maqams into two groups. 1. The ones with "Sharqi" flavor and ones that sound "Gharbi." Bayati, Sikah, Rast, Hijaz, jiharkah, are sharqi, while Kurd, Nahwand, Nikriz, Ajam, even Lami sound a bit Gharbi (not totally due to microtonality) because of their absence of the sikah, and iraq/awj note.

I have listend to this Samai many times..but I could not (and would never) feel it.

Oud proff ..you play it just GREAT. But I prefer to listen to you performing Samai Bayati (Ibrahim Al Aryan) or even Samai Shad Araban...this one is so so so insipide to my ear and heart.

the difference between kurd and bayati it is just the second tone .

in kurd it's half tone and in bayati it's 3/4 tone so...... yeah kurd is more beautiful ;)

The name of this makam "Hicazkar-ı Kürdi" and it belongs to Hadji Arif Bey. Esselam!

As we've been just discussing this issue - also described in the clip description -, yes it is quite "similar". Although it's a very similar scale with Kord - simply -, it does have a different personality in certain ways.

However, I'll have to disagree on the origin of this Maqam (relating it to "Hadji Arif Bey". With all due respect, I'm sure it goes far before his time !

Yes my dear, Hijaz Kar Kord is synonymous with Kurdili Hicaz Kar, it's just different terms for the same thing used interechangeably. It's in essence more more than Kord actually !

That's true. Although the original Semai is played rather as Hijaz Kar Kord (or as known in Turkish as Kurdili Hicaz Kar), it was played in this vid as Kord (on A).
