Yeah, according to People MAgazine at the time, she was a devoted Virginia Slims gal. I was so in love with her back then -- the look, the voice, the attitude... she was something. I don't know what she's doing these days... or if she still is inhaling those Virginia Slims.
The West 57th theme is simply outstanding. One of Edd Kalehoff's best works. I love those classic CBS promos after the intro, and the staff announcer with stylish "This is... CBS" call.
And, of course, West 57th Street is where the CBS Broadcast Center is located, home to CBS News and CBS 2 News (WCBS-TV's broadcast name). In fact, the intros to CBS This Morning (predecessor to The Early Show) say that the show took place at West 57th.
And within the last decade, the CBS Radio Network and WCBS-AM have moved into the CBS Broadcast Center, where before they were at W. 52nd where the corporate offices are located aka Black Rock.
Actually for a while it was the reverse, at one point WCBS used the CBS College Football set for their local news, each week they had to go around and replace CBS logos with 2 logos on all the glass panels at the top.
I think he was mentioning the August 2001 to January 2003 where they were in Studio 43 that was used for The NFL Today, while they were constructing Studio 46 that would then be their current set ever since. If there was a programming conflict, they would broadcast their newscast from the newsroom.
This had to be from 1989..I remember hearing about WCBS-TV doing a series of reports on how to get out of a fire alive..the series was sponsored by McDonald's.
A sponsor on a package from the largest TV market in the country in the late 80s? That's odd given the time of the height of the media business. Unless it was a public service project.
Yep..the special was called "Plan to Get out Alive", and it was based on a 15-part news story from WCBS-TV, and was sponsored by McDonald's and First Alert. In fact, it was broadcast throughout the entire country.
Holy crap! *15 parts*???!!! Wow! Was it broadcasted on a special on CBS? If it was basically, they just chopped them into 15 different parts. I guess there were many deaths with fires back then. I remember being in school when I was young and all the fire safety stuff they would teach us. And is that Brian Williams in the fireman's suit? I dunno, when I saw this clip when it got posted, I thought it looked like him.
It wasn't a spin off, it was a separate news magazine to 60 Minutes to have a fast pace (not even close to today's standards) and more relevant content to younger viewers. It lasted for several years, and when it got canned; few, like Meredith graduated to 60 Minutes.
The "This is CBS" V/O before the 3:30 mark and again at 5:03 was by Pat Connell. However, the news opens all used Gaylord Avery's voice (apparently pre-recorded) by this time.
0:46 2:01 That's Meredith, ten & fourteen years before hosting the View & Millionaire. So this is where she got started on television.

..and the Monday night CBS comedy lineup (on my birthday, February 15th) looked like this:
"KATE & ALLIE": "Inside Park Avenue"
"DESIGNING WOMEN": "The Incredibly Elite Bona Fide Blue-Blood Beaumont Driving Club"
"NEWHART"; "Attention WPIV Shoppers"
"FRANK'S PLACE": "Shorty's Belle"

Actually, this aired on February 13, 1988, 'gameshow', as Carol Burnett's "Hostage" movie aired on February 14th....

this same "sitting around talking about the story" concept is now the whole premise of the TMZ television show

Cool open...almost feels like an open to a Steven Bochco drama.

West 57th...I thought the only 60 Minutes offshoot was 60 Minutes II, the one the Memogate fiasco helped kill.
