Do you think the journey is allegory for the knowledge of good and evil as in the Genesis creation? The misery of obtaining the knowledge the expulsion from paradise/ignorance as ignorance is bliss?
what was ment when it said "If I hide my face for sorrow, there is cause enough," he merely replied; "and if I cover it for secret sin, what mortal might not do the same?"
Thank you so much for clearing things up. I just read it and was a little confused about everything but you really made the dots connect. We have a quiz on this reading tommorow and I think you really helped me out alot.
A Superficial summary rather than an in depth analysis! And the lecturer is so dull as if he wasn't interested himself!! Literature is supposed to be part of one's soul and it should be delivered as such to reveal its profundity. It's not a dictation! Ihope I've never bored my students to death like this!
Since he rejects faith Young Goodman Brown becomes an amoral atheist. He questions morality's very foundation. Why does man require morality at all? The Twilight Zone One More Pallbear is much like Young Goodman Brown.
This is a great discussion to listen to after reading the short story. There were a couple of things that I'd like to mention though.
Goody Cloys said the Devil looked remarkably like Brown's grandfather, and at the ceremony, Brown thought he noticed a figure in the smoke that took the shape of his father. Is there any significance in this?
Brown found his wife's ribbon on a twig before going abandoning all faith. He (and readers) are left wondering whether he was dreaming or not.
Couldn't he have checked to see if he still had the ribbon or if it was in the same area to gain more clarity? Of course, such a disturbing and vivid dream may have killed his faith in humanity regardless, but I'm sure he was a man searching for answers, and that's one way to get some.
This was sooooo helpful. I have an exam on this tommorow and when I read it, i didnt really get it in depth but this analysis made me love the story, and understand it to an entire new extent. Thank you!
woww this is amazingg, i wish i would have found this soooner.
you covered everysingle thing my teacher covered in class , ty soo much, i hope you have videos on other short stories i will be reading . keep posting videos! :D
Thank you for posting this video- When I first read this story only parts of it made sense to me, it was very nice to hear someones take on Young Goodman Brown. Because of your insight I have filled the holes in my reading. Thank you for making me think :)

@Mahoivlich This is a good interpretation of the story. This view accounts for what happens and the gloomy ending. You can make a good case for it.

@sophiecrete It is described as a 'Brief interpretation'. And dictation? It's a video. It's never going to be overly interactive is it?
