My wife bought me one for Christmas and I allready had a good idea how to play it,but your tutorial has really helped me progress. Thank you so much :)
Well... tips for triplets and rolls are always welcome, but I am finding most tutorials show technic for bent wrist playing over straight wrist. I am watching you play and you don't particularly play a strict bent wrist, which helps me a lot. Rim shots are also taught via bent wrist placement, which has left me wondering if my straight wrist placement is okay. I enjoyed your rim shots at the top of the drum. I do play Kerry style, but bent wrist is pain.
I have spent weeks and hours and months going through tutorials and I think your simple explainations, along with up front and clear demonstrations, have done more for me than the technical, sometimes too detailed tutorials! (And the light behind your left hand is perfect.)
Also, for we who cannot be with other Bodhran players, watching your videos was like sitting down with a good friend...
@musicrme46 wow thanks a million! That's really nice of you! :) ya I must do another soon...maybe this weekend. I'm not sure what to do for it though so if you have any questions you want answered or anything you'd like me to go through I'd be more than happy to try! :)
Heya :), this has a been a really helpful tutorial , i havnt been playing Bodhran for very long , do you know about any good Bodhran makers for a beginner because the one im using at the moment im borrowing so will need to get my own soon ?
@MotorheadDrew hi :) to be honest i don't really know any makers (which is kinda embarrassing seeing as I play haha). I've had the same bodhrán since i started playing and as far as I know my Dad just bought it in Waltons in Dublin! I can tell you that tuneable ones are better, I'd recommend not getting a bodhrán with two deep a side, make sure the skin isn't too tight or stretched, and i suppose 16 to 18 inches wide would be the right size! hope that helps a bit! :)
@campb450 are you serious?! god thanks! ya i found the charger for my camera the other day ha so I'll try upload another one soon enough! anything in particular you want to know more about??
@Saxspark23 hi sorry it took me so long to get back to you! Anyway she's playing a variation of a reel rhythm. If you just get the basic reel rhythm (showed above) then you should have no bother adding in the slight syncopations that she does! I'd show you only i don't have the camera with me sorry!
@TheWhistlingGypsy On and off for about 6 months.. We have a difficult relationship. :D Sometimes we get on,sometimes not.I can never seem to play for more than half an hour!Do you practice by playing with music or just on your own? What would you recommend?Fleadh last year was in Cavan,I'm from Cavan and spent the whole week at it.Can't remember a lot of it! :D Best one yet!
@MeeMee22221 haha sounds good so! :P i practice with music mainly! i mean it's rarely a solo instrument so it makes sense to get used to playin it with music :) where's d fleadh this year do u know?
@TheWhistlingGypsy Back in the beautiful Cavan. :) If you happen to see someone kickin' a bodhrán down Main St.,more than likely it'll be myself.Brilliant tutorial by the way!
@MeeMee22221 haha right so if i get there i'll be sure 2 look out for that! :P and jasus no it could've been so much better! i just waffled like haha - i'll upload another soon as i get d chance! exams are d bane of my life!
hey thanks for the upload, you did a great job explaining! I'm just starting off on bodhrán and haven't found many videos here that are all that helpful for beginners and going through the step by step, most seem to be just these lads showing off their skills! One question, you could put up a wee video of the right dampening technique when you move your hand across the inside of the skin, as I don't really know when you're meant to do it and for what purpose. Also what about wetting it? Thanks!
@brizzo7 hey thanks for the comment! :) Just one thing, when you say "right dampening" do you mean what my left hand does on the back? Sorry I amn't well versed in the bodhrán lingo haha! Wetting? well wetting the bodhrán is where you get a damp (not soaking) cloth and rub it lightly around the skin of the bodhrán. You only do this if u think the skin is too tight. This can happen if you're in a hot room or have been playing for a while! Hope that helps a bit! :)
@TheWhistlingGypsy yeah that's what I mean, when you use your left had as a damper (I think I'm using the right word there, though could well be wrong!) I know about as much as you press your hand with differing pressures and it alters the sound somewhat, but why should you do this and also when?
That's a great help, thanks for the tip about wetting the skin too! :)
@brizzo7 You use your left hand in order to create different sounds to suit different parts of whatever tune you're playing along to - for example less pressure from your left hand will give a lower, bass-like sound that people often use to emphasise the strong beats of the tune and then more pressure produces a more click-like sound for the strong beats of the second half of a tune or something! It varies depending on what you think sounds good as well as on the particular tune!!
@TheWhistlingGypsy Ok, great, I think I've got it now, I'll have some fun experimenting with it! If you have time to record a video tutorial at some point that'd be very helpful but I'm sure you're busy enough as it is so no worries if you can't right now!
One more question, have you found any contemporary songs that go well with the bodhrán? I mean songs that aren't traditional music, jigs and so on. I'd like to experiment and use the bodhrán with different styles, do you know of any at all?
@brizzo7 glad i could be of some help! :) i'll upload another video sometime in the near future but im in college and essays are beginning to pile up haha! Anyway as regards the contemporary songs - do you mean actual songs or tunes?? sorry - i'm not the brightest!
@TheWhistlingGypsy haha no worries, I know what it's like, I'm at uni too! well, either/or really... I was thinking more along the lines of actual songs, but even general tunes also. For example, is there a song on the charts (even though I hate what's on the charts) that you think has the right rhythm for bodhrán, as I seem to find it only fits certain rhythms that most contemporary songs don't have, but then again I could be wrong, I'm only starting out after all! Any modern-day tune really...
@brizzo7 hmmm i can't think of any offhand! I normally tend to stick to trad music myself! but if i happen to hear any that i think the bodhrán would work well with you'll be the first person I tell haha! :D For the moment, seeing as you're only learning, I think maybe sticking to jigs and reels for a little while - reels especially - might be the best way to go! Once you've got those rhythms down then you'll probably find you can fit it in with anything ha!
@TheWhistlingGypsy no worries, just thought I might as well ask while I had the chance! Ok great, I'll look up some reels and jigs too and get stuck in! :) Thanks again for all your help and advice!
Well done! Your technique is very interesting. Do you use both ends of the tipper to hit the bodhrån? Would you post another video about your roll technique?
@appeblacb00k ya i use both ends of the tipper for the rolls! ok as soon as i get the opportunity (may not be for a while), I'll post one about the roll! :)
