@themusicmatterz I don't feel that strongly about Facebook, but I do know it's a breeding ground for trouble. It's caused problems between families, couples, friends, all because people open their big mouths.
I was going to try to sign up for Spotify. Then I disovered Spotify now requires that subscibers have a Facebook account. About eighteen months ago, shortly after joining Facebook, when I realized how invasive and heck-bent on monitizing on subscribers' personal information and consumption preferences I de-activated my Facebook account. Spotify seems like a good idea but I really don't need Zuckerburg and Ek cataogue-ing my music preferences. Set up your FB account with junk information!
@Jcolinsol I share that question, I'm curious as to why there aren't hundreds of groups and startups trying their hand at it. But... Google is apparently soon to announce their big social network, hopefully it will be great, and topples failbook. Rumors suggest it will be called "Google Circles" (as in like, Social Circles) but theres nothing verified about it at all yet.
I deleted my facebook account over a month ago!! I had lots of friends and family on there, so if they need me they can do it the old-fashioned way, with a telephone call or a letter via the post-office. Recently my e-mail was corrupted, I tried to fix it, but instead just developed another account. I think instead of giving that out to everybody, I will keep it exclusively for business. I was really getting tired of the barrage of articles and comments from my sister....LOL!!
So Leo, 3 months later, do you miss Facebook? By that I mean, do you see traffic, followings or interaction down. We love Buzz too, but we are still willing to allow our followers to get our stuff where they want it.
But then I am not quite as famous as you Leo. Working on it though....
I was talked into facebook for our business but yesterday I found a community page with our business name pop up in the search. I reported this thinking it was someone starting a fake profile. I researched what it really is. I am very upset about this and am considering closing my facebook account. Our customers are happy we're on facebook but its TOS and design is ever changing, no direct email support, etc. I don't want to lose access to it when I reach a certain amount of fans either.
I did this a year ago. I'm glad too. A side-story about that. When I deleted my account it ask me to type in a captcha: It took 11 attempts before they finally admitted I got it right. I got it right all 11 times, I may have possibly gotten in wrong once. But I definitely got it right most--if not all times. They didn't want me to quit. That made me sure never to sign up again. I have a fake account I use now if I ever want to play poker or something, which is rare.
The only problem with me is that when I google myself I get filtered through the great firewall of china :-/ catch 22 i guess, where my website is lower in the search but critic sites about me by other people appear first.
Oh wow, if you trust Google much more than Facebook, that's like going from the frying pan into the fire. Google is WAAAYYYY too big for their britches. They already dominate paid online search. Ever try to get approved for Adsense? Fuhgetaboutit.
Google is good for search and that is it. Anything else is like pledging your allegiance to the king. Google is the internet king--pledge your allegiance to them and you are ay their mercy.....
I just changed my password to 100+ random characters and with that string in the clipboard, deleted the account. SO long Facebook, no more invading my privacy.
You should check back in 14 days to see if it has actually been deleted. This method did not work for me, I had done it before and it was still there when I checked. Looks like I will have to do some email requests to get the job done.
I joined back when it was restricted to just your college. Felt much safer. Now I'm just very careful what I share since it is really just as public or more so than Twitter.
I'm sorry but you folks are delusional for thinking that Facebook was going to keep anything private or Google too for that matter. If you want privacy, don't put things on the web.
I'm shocked Leo Laporte doesn't know this and is now regretting this like so many others.
My solution is to open everything and post things knowing it will be available. Has been since I signed up. Jeez, you are all acting like internet noobs.
@freq32 You are right on target as to this site and any public website, but Facebook started as a walled garden then sold bunches of gates and holes in the garden walls. Have you ever looked at the PRIVACY PAGES, 100s of settings! Good bye facebook.
I agree that nothing damaging should be placed on the public network.
good for you Leo, i thought you were just talking about deleting your account for the the last few weeks, never thought you'd actually do it. but you pulled the trigger haha! "SCREW YOU FACEBOOK"
This is fantastic. So many people think they can not delete their FB account. The privacy law should come down really heavy on Facebook to implement new instant delete account activation like other SN sites. Thanks Leo
They say there's 400 million people on facebook. How many of these accounts are family pets (dogs, cats, goldfish)? How many people have two identities or even old accounts they've lost their passwords to? How many are fake identities? I know, even if only half of these accounts are "real", that still gives them 200 million.
On Facebook, I used a nickname, and the only personal info is date of birth and location; no info such as phone numbers, etc. Have gmail addy for contact. Some Friends might be considered personal info. I think this limited info is a good idea... anyone agree or disagree?

What I don't get, is why there aren't better alternatives to facebook popping up. Why this seeming monopoly?
