This is one of FOUR UK no.1s the Everly Brothers had and it spent no less than 7 weeks at the top of the British charts in 1960. Without doubt they are the greatest harmony duo ever, and this is my personal favourite by them. They were big in America, but HUGE in Britain. Great clip, thanks for posting.
It's hilarious how in most teen audience shows of the '50s to the early '60s(like American Bandstand), someone is ALWAYS chewing gum and they film it!!!
@scottbaino This show was the Dick Clark Saturday Night Beechnut Show. The sponsor was Beechnut Gum. They handed out the gum before the show and encouraged all the kids to chew it during the show. It's called advertising.
If you notice, they are all wearing the IFIC button which indicates that this was the Saturday Night Beechnut show held at the Little Theater in New York. The angles of thes shots is different as well the seat arrangement. The Beechnut Show at the Little Theater ended in September of 1960 so this is a later shot. Hope this helps.
I can't help but love this in spite of the chewing and clapping! Just seeing the young Phil and Don up close, strolling with their fabulous guitars and looking so cute, who would not love this! Especially when I recall being around the same age as these kids, at that time. I would have loved to be chewing and clapping along with them. Thanks for a great video! And thanks for sharing, ariesgypsy! Favorite!
How can you tell the difference between an afternoon "BANDSTAND" performance and the Saturday night "BEECH-NUT" show? Again, look at the "IFIC" buttons, and some of the kids chewing the sponsor's gum. Second, the show this came from originated from ABC's Hollywood facilities. Third, the Saturday night show usually orginated from a theater in New York [instead of the customary WFIL-TV studio in Philadelphia], with no dancing, and a larger audience staying in their seats...
This is from their appearance on "THE SATURDAY NIGHT BEECH-NUT SHOW" in July 1960 (note the "IFIC" buttons worn by the kids in the audience; that was part of the sponsor's slogan, "Beech-Nut Flavor-IFIC Gum").
@fromthesidelines Thanks for the info. How can you tell it's the SATURDAY NIGHT BEECH-NUT SHOW? I often have problems telling one Dick Clark show from the other. I could use some helpful hints.
