im amazed, that some people just cant appreciate the artist and the song, at least JR cash was qualified to sing it having grown up a share croppers son in Dyess Ark,i can assure you Harry Belafonte NEVER picked cotton, however he does a great job too Huddie Ledbetter,Who wrote it,sure as hell did pick cotton, when not serving time on work gangs in texas
This tune rose up in the 50's again thanks to I know one recording by Harry Belafonte. Many early folk groups sang this traditional southern, black song as well. I was taught it in music class, 1957, by a piano teacher. She taught the whole class, and we were paired off by two's, held hands and jumped up and down while singing it. At the time I was about 8 years old. I merely thought we were honoring the field work(ers) of days gone by.
It was all in the same time period, and Abraham Lincoln did not free anyone. In the Emancipation Proclamation, it only frees slaves in the south, a part of the country he had no control over at the time. Meanwhile, the slaves in the north werent going anywhere
@CopsUrMasterAndLord If you did any research before interjecting your uneducated opinion, you would know that Johnny Cash Grew up very poor on a cotton farm and picked plenty of cotton, himself. How about this, "Leadbelly wrote a song about the hard working southern farm environment, and Johnny Cash heard it and (being from that same environment) liked the song and decided to record it"
@pappymcdamnit Why are you still angry at black people? Do you want reparations or something? It is people like you who flaunt Johnny Cash's background and rub it in the faces of poor black men like myself.
@CopsUrMasterAndLord I never said anything about being angry at black people, but black people who turn everything into something racist, DO piss me off. Its a white guy singing about picking cotton........... A white guy that HAS picked cotton. How does that make it from the perspective of the Massa? You were never a slave, get over it. I'm Irish, you ever hear about Irish people bitching about being railroad slaves? NO!
@pappymcdamnit No, I was never a slave. I'm not black either. But you don't know what it is like to be a slave because you didn't work on the railroads. That was a long time ago. Black people today know what it is like to be slaves because they were slaves until Abraham Lincoln freed them.
@pappymcdamnit for starters the people who made the railroad were irish and chinese, both were paid, only black people were slaves per se. Although whites, blacks, chinese all worked the fields too it just happened that a tiny ammount of money was paid to non blacks making them officially not slaves, it doesnt mean they werent though, could they escape? no

Leadbelly's song was the song of the oppressed working, and this is the song of the master commanding his injust mandate.
