By the end Anna had no control over her life, Howard was drugging her constantly to keep her under his control. Most of the scripts were in HIS name. If Anna hadn't been an addict, perhaps Daniel wouldn't have chosen to use the drugs he did. Daniel's environment and perhaps a genetic disposition to drug use is what caused him to die as he did. Of course Anna would say that Howard killed Daniel. Alcoholics and drug addicts, while they are in active addiction, rarely see themselves as the problem for anything. It takes a lot of sobering up to see the Truth and, sadly, Anna overdosed before she could get to that point.
