You realize you're criticizing a half-satire, right?
It's not slacktavism--the people whom went to the rally, went to the rally to be entertained by John Stewart and Stephen Colbert.
If you'll recall, this whole rally started after Glenn Becks completely ridiculous, blight of a rally. (Two steps down from MLK? Really? One of the most influential and quintessential writers, activists, orators of all time. Fuck you Glenn Beck. Fuck you.)
@PicklePumpers I do apologies if it came of as a insult, but I did not mean it that way. What is you opinion on corporations? Do you think that they are all bad,or do you think that there are ones out there that are good?
@PicklePumpers I did not once insult you.I am asking a simple question, and you are unwilling,or unable to answer. That is why you result to childish insults. The reason I would like to know this is because if you know what a corporation then my next point would be different than if you did not know. That is all.

@PicklePumpers I know what a corporation is. My comment was to find out if you do.I can with your childish insult that you do not have a clue. Grow up!

Slacktivism is formed out of words slacker and activism. The word describes "feel-good" measures, in support of an issue or social cause, that have little or no practical effect other than to make the person doing it feel satisfaction. The acts tend to require little personal effort from the "Slacktivist".
Examples of Slactivism include signing internet petitions, wearing awareness bracelets, joining a Facebook group, posting videos, or taking part in short-term boycotts such as Buy Nothing Day.

Wall-Street bailed out with 23.7 TRILLION of YOUR tax money. 3 TRILLION went to Israel for FREE. Pentagon spends 1.8 TRILLION a year. wow all you really had was that slactivist line eh? What does it matter if this was the people's first rally and that they hadn't rallied behind the causes in all your loaded questions? Really man if nothing else at least it's a start
after these elections the guy proved a point nobody voted and basically allowed the right wingers to win. so i say to you "SLACKERS" don't bitch when nothing gets done when the Republicans block everything for the sake right vs. left politics. Because you got nothing to blame but yourself, ya idiots.
@AjaxFerrariLeafs I'm sorry but what have the left wingers done lately? As far as I'm concerned they did nothing as well except make this country socialist. Oh, and voter turnout was bigger this year than in 2006 when the democrats took over. Just an FYI.
that reporter dude is an idiot. its like he makes a dumb ass statement about his political views then slaps a question mark at the end and expects people to answer him logically.
Wow. Please tell me that SOMEONE you talked to had at least some vauge clue into politics... Then again, what do you expect from a "rally" hosted by Comedy Central. There was no major political purpose. It was essentially just a concert and a comedy show claiming to accomplish something.
@IAmARad If couldn't tell that the video had a clear agenda, meaning that it showed you only what they wanted you to see, then I feel for you. It was a pitiful attempt to cast a negative image the rally. His questions were highly biased, "holier than thou", and demeaning. Pathetic
not to mention: how disrespectful those kids are sitting in tress on the washington mall grounds. have some respect for those lands. the white house, the jefferson, lincoln memorials and the washington monument. no respect at all.
fucking hippie sheeple. no idea as to anything that is going on. go shoot up too much heroine, die, and give patriots more breathing room. thanks. as for singing cumbeya * (spelling??), i am surprised they didn't break out singing it. there's more denim than the 70's and 80's combined. more tie dye shirts than.. and wtf some lady doesn't like questions so she became violent?? that didn't happen when we were at the restoring honor rally.
What's the point of this? Biased questions at a biased rally. I get it, shit's all messed up. Half these people are there just to see Colbert and Stewart, or don't know why they're there at all. Crowds draw crowds.
The primary misconception about the term/accusation "slacktivist" is the assumption that there IS so action these people could take that would influence their government. There is not. Literally millions of Americans marched to protest the impending invasion of Iraq and the bipartisan corporate government voted overwhelmingly to ignore them. Don't call these people slackers unless you can suggest actions they can take that will actually work.
I didn't know that this is what the rally was about until a few days before.
It's a brilliant way to get people who would normally sit on their hands and say "Were just too busy", off the couch and into politics.
Now if we can just get the nation to stop being suckered into the "Us Vs. Them" mentality and stop voting for a different named party that doesn't actually change anything..... and start thinking and voting for a person (not a party) to lead the U.S down a better path.
@surfjacobson1 but the rally its self was about people sitting on a fence and pussy footing around important issues, grow some balls and take a stand...
You seem to be saying that these people should stay out of politics rather than become involved for the first time in their life. Have you listened to the Tea party? They are terribly informed, but since they go to lots of rallys they're fine with you right? 40% of our country missed the last election, the nation is slacking, don't be angry at the people who finally want to start acting.
@KaylinJH I believe that the first step to becoming involved is to become informed. To be informed is to understand that there are two sides to every issue we see, so you're right, nothing may come as a direct result of this rally, but it gives us some momentum in the right direction.
I am glad we have a journalist like this... A self rightous person who knows how to satire the ills that make up America. Bash a military who provides preservation of human rights in countries who have never had them before. Allowing womens and minority rights, freedom of speech and press, must be injust and immoral. Throw in a slam down of industry which has raised human living standards beyond any point in human history and maybe he can start a show and sit behind a fake desk too. So cliche
"It doesnt matter if people are doing dumb stuff, nobody likes to be treated like a stupid person. You deserved the slap."
Punches. You mean punches.
So the response to criticism and verbal antagonism is violence? If that wasn't a set up with a friend, I'd be filing charges. If you think that's an over-reaction, reverse the roles and then tell me that "she deserved the punch".
i really wish i went to this rally now......im glad you at least got a glimpse of where us "slacktivists" are coming from....and it seems like you put some effort into makin this a fair and informal video and not somethin to rip apart what they were tryin to accomplish....good vid
Davisfleetwood, you were AWESOME to that bitch slacktivist... I just wish you were braver. The world NEEDS people like you... and basic justice IS INDEED EXTREME.
You are kinda missing the point of the rally. Were all aware that this was for the "silent majority" if you watched the show you would hear many many many references to that. At least they went to a rally, some people don't go to any their whole life.
when does a slactervist become and activist and what does it take, it seems in these days entertainment but 1968 it took an illegal war. but man that slap was coming because you made her look foolish, but it did take a while for her to realize it, Thanks for the education and entertainment mr fleetwood, excellant
This was a Dadaist protest against extremism. Most of us are about ten minutes late for what we have to do to make a living. If we want real change then enact the draft again and you will get real protests. Americans care about what affects them and politics is local. God bless.
Slacktivists are apparently very violent . I hope your ok from that beating Davis, you are brave. There is no comparison to Davis and Stewart. Stewart doesn't give any air time to the "WAR"S" and drone attacks on sovereign nations like Pakistan. As long as people keep supporting this President we will never end these WARS what the hell is wrong with these morons. Bring the TROOPS HOME ALREADY WTF!!!!!!
I love the slacktivist checking his phone during the interview, and the other slacktivists who clearly had difficulty processing multiple sentences spoken to them by a human being. If only they could have read your questions in Tweet-speak, they may have understood you. If these people actually voted, the Dems would not have lost the House.
Well slactivist whatever you call it, you have to admit that Jon Stewart does have a lot of followers. What he choses to do with them is up to him. However you have to admit that calling them names, not saying that I think that you are calling them names but to them, yeah you are. On the point of activism, we can learn something from Stewart. Look, Stewart is doing his thing what we can stucy, is his approach who knows with the right push you can make those slacktivist into actvist.
@ thesandysaurus This is an organized, publicized protest on the capital and they should expect to be interviewed. Second, the very nature of this protest IS the Daily Show targeting normal, well-meaning people on the street. It's targeting the Tea Party, Code Pink, all those people who have protested in the past. Those movements are fine being interviewed - they mean buisiness, and want to confront reporters. In general, just asking a whole bunch of questions does not vindicate assault.
sanity is not discussing how best to compromise with an avowed enemy. people presuppose that factions in our political systems are acting in good faith. the very structure of our representative democracies are such that the workers must fight constantly against raw capitalism - any moment of laxity results in the tide pushing the workers back into the maws of poverty. when bourgeoisie declare "i require a pound of your flesh", sanity would not be to give an ounce, it would be to fight back.
The signs at that rally spoke to cable news echo chamber issues. There was a lot of protest against Fox. I thought it was thought provoking and therefore worthwhile.
This is as much journalism as The Daily Show is...The Daily Show always lets the opposing side on, but skews their voices and eggs them on. In fact, if this was a satire on how The Daily Show does its reports, they did a good job. IMHO if this video upsets you, but you're not upset at the Daily Show as well, you have a double standard.
@davisfleetwood Why are you going to sit here and bitch about a comedy show? Daily Show is a joke, and is supposed to be taken as such. I don't get why you tools get butthurt over a COMEDY PROGRAM when sadly it speaks more truth than most of the television shows on today.
Yes, the daily show eggs on opposing viewpoints -but includes funny, random jokes and punchlines. Davis is just mean spirited and condescending. He deserved to get punched. Also, the daily show targets politicians and political analysts who put themselves in the spotlight...not normal, well-meaning people on the street.
@SunshineCasy the diffrence is how much its eggs the veiwer on. It's the diffrence between flat on calling somebody out on thier stupidity, or just suggesting it. Both work for diffrent sorts of people, people who are sheep go for flat out stating the issue. People who are educated, who can see the satire, and comedy of the worlds situation and how ridiculous this all is, who like to live their lives, watch the daily show because it's funny, they know where they stand, and can stop and breathe.
@proft123 So calling out your opponent directly is a sign of less intellect? That's a very complacent idea right there. Personally I think it's more polite to directly address me if someone thinks I'm mistaken - I'd rather they do that than constantly deride me and imply that I'm making a mistake. I can't say that implying someone is stupid is any less condenscending than saying it directly. I think it's just a way of avoiding confrontation and running away from conflict.
Maybe if we all got out more and did these rallies when it counted Davis wouldn't have a point when he dubs many of us slacktivists... Maybe Dave you could call those people recovering slacktivists.
Satirist arrogantly teasing Slacktavists. Kind of reminded me of the old Stuttering John interviews. Just in a not funny kind of way. Maybe if you got Morton Downey Jr. to beat you up.
Should've interviewed me, Davis. I've been to many rallies, especially in the early 1980s when Thatcher and Reagan seemed to be poised to take us into a nuclear conflict. Greenham Common, Menwith Hill, Molesworth, and huge protests in London, larger in scale even than this one.
We're not all slactivists. It all seemed quite familiar, although much less muddy than Molesworth or Menwith Hill, with considerably fewer coppers than the time we tried to get to Stonehenge in 1985.
Wait until the Chinese or someone else comes to fight us on American soil, and these people are starving because the dollar is defunct after the bankers take everything and we will see if these are teeny tiny issues. People like that piss me off. Unless they are being bombed, or someone they know has been killed with white phosphorus, they just cant be bothered to care.
What was that guy talking about? A bunch of people going to DC for the first time ever? Does he mean them personally or does he think those other protests did not happen because he was not there?
I dont completely agree with your depictions of the blue and red. I think they are the same party with two heads. One steals in front of your face, the other steals behind your back. Both lie.
This was awesome. I love how you got a lot of people (including myself) to see that no action in politics, such as not voting for who you feel represents your view, will lead to a government totally opposite from your ideals. Also how that rally itself opened our eyes to political apathy (finally) and in sense becoming a gate way drug (your words) to a more politically engaged life. Great Piece!!! It was thought provoking and honest.
you show the guy being hit by that woman, but you left out the part where he screams like a little girl 'Owww leave me alone' then gets all tough with the cameraman saying he should have done something to the girl...
Baby steps. They are slacktivists, but getting them out is step 1. Next come the Wii game for Radicals. Starts with rallies, then pickets, all the stages to riots with virtual clubs and revolutions. Very physical indeed.
@ivanbrewski Its true, David. I love your posts, but you are totally baiting folks. If they were at the rally, than they are no longer "Slacktivists".
Bully tactics, edited interviews, and general rudeness. You're no better than your cable news contemporaries. I s'pose that with over two-hundred thousand people in attendance, a few dicks were bound to rise up.
We're not slacktavists....."we're just too damned busy"........"give it some years".....and my favorite was "smack, punch, hit.......hit, punch, smack".....that is all.
Hey Davis, I understand your point... I probably agree with you. But you really kinda come across here like a douchebag. I mean really, calling people slackers is just kinda rude.
you missed the meaning. its about getting everyone to talk (not yell) and find solutions. most people don't see or think of the wars as Criminal. It's never even crossed their mind. I admire what Jon is trying to do. You stay in so we can go out and then you come out and criticize us for it. It's almost like watching a wanna be bully pick on the kid with a speech impediment. People don't have all the facts and that includes Davis Fleetwood. while well informed he don't know everything.
Me always being the optimist would like to hope that these 'slacktivists' will get inspired by this rally to take an interest, and hopefully they'll maybe make the step up to real activism... This could possibly be a very good thing.
I use to watch the Daily Show and Colbert in my teenage years when I started to become interested in politics. Sure they are funny and humor has a place in public discourse, however there comes a time when laughing is not an appropriate response to what is happening in the news. I think you've demonstrated that a great many of their viewers haven't quite reached that point where they realize the news isn't merely a show on television.
I'm not saying that it is wrong to laugh or that the news is not laughable. However laughing does nothing more than temporarily alleviate anxieties. The fact that we are aware that we need to but the word "news" in quotations and that so many people look to comedians for "news" isn't particularly funny, but rather a sign of debilitating passivity, cynicism and/or apathy.
Haha it's good to know you still read this stuff. It was a nice homage if that's what it was. Just to be clear you weren't trying to say "building on common ground is no different from seeking a "middle" ground when there isn't one" were you?

after these elections the guy proved a point nobody voted and basically allowed the right wingers to win. so i say to you "SLACKERS" don't bitch when nothing gets done when the Republicans block everything for the sake right vs. left politics. Because you got nothing to blame but yourself, ya idiots.
AjaxFerrariLeafs 1 year ago
@AjaxFerrariLeafs I'm sorry but what have the left wingers done lately? As far as I'm concerned they did nothing as well except make this country socialist. Oh, and voter turnout was bigger this year than in 2006 when the democrats took over. Just an FYI.

Wow. Please tell me that SOMEONE you talked to had at least some vauge clue into politics... Then again, what do you expect from a "rally" hosted by Comedy Central. There was no major political purpose. It was essentially just a concert and a comedy show claiming to accomplish something.
IAmARad 1 year ago
@IAmARad If couldn't tell that the video had a clear agenda, meaning that it showed you only what they wanted you to see, then I feel for you. It was a pitiful attempt to cast a negative image the rally. His questions were highly biased, "holier than thou", and demeaning. Pathetic

What's the point of this? Biased questions at a biased rally. I get it, shit's all messed up. Half these people are there just to see Colbert and Stewart, or don't know why they're there at all. Crowds draw crowds.
MajesticChicken 1 year ago 8
The primary misconception about the term/accusation "slacktivist" is the assumption that there IS so action these people could take that would influence their government. There is not. Literally millions of Americans marched to protest the impending invasion of Iraq and the bipartisan corporate government voted overwhelmingly to ignore them. Don't call these people slackers unless you can suggest actions they can take that will actually work.
CharleyIthaca 1 year ago
I didn't know that this is what the rally was about until a few days before.
It's a brilliant way to get people who would normally sit on their hands and say "Were just too busy", off the couch and into politics.
Now if we can just get the nation to stop being suckered into the "Us Vs. Them" mentality and stop voting for a different named party that doesn't actually change anything..... and start thinking and voting for a person (not a party) to lead the U.S down a better path.
surfjacobson1 1 year ago
@surfjacobson1 but the rally its self was about people sitting on a fence and pussy footing around important issues, grow some balls and take a stand...

muzzleflash7 1 year ago
You seem to be saying that these people should stay out of politics rather than become involved for the first time in their life. Have you listened to the Tea party? They are terribly informed, but since they go to lots of rallys they're fine with you right? 40% of our country missed the last election, the nation is slacking, don't be angry at the people who finally want to start acting.
Androski098 1 year ago
@Androski098 but they ARENT getting involved.. they are all sitting on the fence tring to play nice, none of which gets anything done
KaylinJH 1 year ago
@KaylinJH I believe that the first step to becoming involved is to become informed. To be informed is to understand that there are two sides to every issue we see, so you're right, nothing may come as a direct result of this rally, but it gives us some momentum in the right direction.

So cliche

So the response to criticism and verbal antagonism is violence? If that wasn't a set up with a friend, I'd be filing charges. If you think that's an over-reaction, reverse the roles and then tell me that "she deserved the punch".

Yes, the daily show eggs on opposing viewpoints -but includes funny, random jokes and punchlines. Davis is just mean spirited and condescending. He deserved to get punched. it's that old truism (paraphrasing)
if you like somebody your kneejerk response is to agree
& then to cut slack if you find later you really dont agree all that much
if you dont like somebody your kneejerk is disagreement
& then to pounce on him/her figuratively - or literally if youre
like the woman in this vid - on how/why s/he is such a misinformed
loser moron ...
solution? have to listen to both sides' view then step back
find the commonality to work with
JustAintthatWay 1 year ago
@SunshineCasy the diffrence is how much its eggs the veiwer on. It's the diffrence between flat on calling somebody out on thier stupidity, or just suggesting it. Both work for diffrent sorts of people, people who are sheep go for flat out stating the issue. People who are educated, who can see the satire, and comedy of the worlds situation and how ridiculous this all is, who like to live their lives, watch the daily show because it's funny, they know where they stand, and can stop and breathe.
proft123 1 year ago
@proft123 So calling out your opponent directly is a sign of less intellect? That's a very complacent idea right there. Personally I think it's more polite to directly address me if someone thinks I'm mistaken - I'd rather they do that than constantly deride me and imply that I'm making a mistake. I can't say that implying someone is stupid is any less condenscending than saying it directly. I think it's just a way of avoiding confrontation and running away from conflict.

dunskie 1 year ago

Both lie.

bigdipper117 1 year ago
This was awesome. I love how you got a lot of people (including myself) to see that no action in politics, such as not voting for who you feel represents your view, will lead to a government totally opposite from your ideals. Also how that rally itself opened our eyes to political apathy (finally) and in sense becoming a gate way drug (your words) to a more politically engaged life. Great Piece!!! It was thought provoking and honest.

actual listening openly would be nice too

Just discovered your videos today and I'm a fan.
I use to watch the Daily Show and Colbert in my teenage years when I started to become interested in politics. Sure they are funny and humor has a place in public discourse, however there comes a time when laughing is not an appropriate response to what is happening in the news. I think you've demonstrated that a great many of their viewers haven't quite reached that point where they realize the news isn't merely a show on television.
wort148 1 year ago
@wort148 laughing is an appropriate response to how the "news" is reported.
beenz07 1 year ago
@beenz07
