  • in the freeze frame it looks a bit like u can see his bursting legs

  • How Zanardis leg moves OMFG

  • I was a CART official at Rockingham a week later and the whole paddock was in shock. During one of the rain delays we had a briefing on what happened and the rescue by Dr Steve Olvey and Simple Green Safety Team. I spoke to Tags during the Friday rain out and he was distraught so much so I had to call Dr Terry Trammell over to help him. Tags was glad that there was someone to talk to who was in CART but not a full time member. That month was a hard month for CART

  • And he still ended 4th in the New York Marathon wearing his leg protheses. Unbelievable, Zanardi is a true iron man.

  • @ursuss100 Zanardi used a hand cycle for those marathons haha.

  • He is one of the most blessed human beings Ive ever heard of. Floundering in Formula One in uncompetitive cars in the 90's. Nearly killed at Spa during practice for the GP. Came to the USA won the Indycar Championship convincingly. Went back to F1 but again didnt go anywhere except back to Indycar and then this! In an accident which absolutely should have killed him. Heart of a Lion.

  • To not die from such an impact & its consequences is unbelievable.

  • @flipsidedogchop Yeah he should be dead.

  • And Zanardi still drive WTCC

  • 0:25 ***** Shit Look the limbs in the left up side!!!!

  • I hate the cunt who hit him.

  • @MilibandDavid why? It was an accident. Alex spun off of the exit road and onto the track in front of Patrick. Pat is going nearly 200mph, you can't simply react that fast mid corner.

  • @TeamPBR2000 Patrick Carpentier was the first one....the one who hit Zanardi is Alex Tagliani!

  • Zanardi is to be commended but what about the response team and the German doctors? Those people saved his life.

  • That's bloody awful!

  • At 0:08 Zanardi tries moving.

  • alessandro zanardi!

    legend!!

  • How can anybody make a joke from this ! I genuinely had nothing but tears in my eyes & hands over my mouth when I saw this & if you Fuckers who make jokes really do find this funny then you need help BIG HELP as anybody who at least as any ounce of decency in them would contemplate on how lucky they really are in life ! & For me personally it actually makes me want to stop taking my body for granted by abusing it & actually do something with my life ! Although unlike him I probably never will.

  • At 0:27 is that his feet?

  • @eminemisboss313 what's left of them yeah.

and Eminem is boss, btw.(I'm sure you prolly heard that before, but it is true)

  • Both his legs litterally exploded on impact so yep it's not jello it's body parts flying in the air.

  • terrible pictures :(

  • @Wallbreaker91 F2ck you, pussy!

  • @bugpartsoup U mad? O_o"

  • @bugpartsoup dude, wtf is wrong with you? dont be like that ewing90 or whatever his name is asshole

  • whenever you watch these types of crashes, you think "if only he knew what was going to happen" or in a horrified tone you want to shout "look out"

  • 00:08 you can actually see blood running down the track, cant believe he would still be conscious and moving what was left of his legs then. The guy is made of steel

  • look nine seconds into the video here you see somthing move up and then back down right in the front of the race car anyone know what that is?

  • Alex needed to be reanimated seven (!) times. When you look at sheer statistics, the chances of a successful reanimation are in the region of 10 to 20 percent. If you want to know how much luck one needs to finally stay alive after all this, do the math.

  • 00:08 is he actually moving what is left of his leg? damn!!! i thought he fainted immediately. was he conscious? and you can even see pieces of his leg at the end of the video jeez...

but he's a tough one, he went back to life the way no one would imagine. hero.

  • In The Picture 0:27..The flying red things..Are part of Zanardi´s legs??

    If so.....Im just scarred.

  • @xXPaRaDoXiCXx i believe so

  • @xXPaRaDoXiCXx Yes :(

  • @xXPaRaDoXiCXx yes it is, as confirmed by a lot of photographer and race reviewer.... so horror...

  • @xXPaRaDoXiCXx

There's nothing else in a champ car "Squishy" enough to look like that during a crash. You're probably looking at the remants of the fat and musculature of his legs.

  • the workers had probably seconds to save his life

  • Is that pieces of leg at 0:27?!

  • @SlowNerveAction7 Unfortunately it is.

  • @SlowNerveAction7 yes...

  • @SlowNerveAction7 Yes it sadly are...

  • he's one of the coolest race drivers... thank God he didn't die at this crash and we can still see him racing...

  • Zanardi is a great guy with a great attitude towards life. I've never seen this angle before and I'm glad it wasn't zoomed in any farther, there's already some things showing that is very "real"

  • he is a hero

  • Zanardi = HERO in WTCC

  • they had about 15 seconds to save him, unbelievable they could do it!

  • @keytek9:Did he really said that?It wouldn,t surprise me with such boost of adrenaline.

  • @keytek9

Fuck you don't make a joke out of this.

  • cazzo alla fine si vedono brandelli di gambe cazzo!!!

  • the rest of his legs....horrible.....=(

  • Hardest crash I've seen since Geoff Bodine at Daytona a year ago

  • I'm so sorry for Zanardi cos he's crashed and we know the consequences. But i'm so glad that he still lived for that matter! Even been racing after that hideous crash too! Respect!

  • well that was a big one check the speed difference his car just accelerate like hell.. i am not sure in F1 car in this situation have better chances , but agree F1 cars are safer!

  • Unlike F1, CART cars are not safe! There's no way an F1 car would break up like that.

  • the f1 is desinged to brake up but not in high speed..

  • @glogmulch34 Nonsence. It's just impossible to constuct a car stable enough for such a situation. They were driving at about 350 km/h; there you cut though everything like it's butter.

  • Absolute racing hero.

A tough and resolved racer to the core.

  • Thank God for that medical team and Zanardi great ATTITUDE!

  • he has lost his left and right leg

  • He lost one just above the knee and the other, just below. No reason to get a negative star because of your correct reply.

  • 0:26 omg!! you can see flesh.. i think o.o im glad he's okay though :)

  • The CART series could not outlive without such a personality as Zanardi in the long run, and in 2008 CART was finito.

  • He almost died cause blood loss...

  • This was really horror. I remember seeing this crash live on german tv. Just a minute after the crash the tv-station (ARD) stopped the whole coverage because of the horror that went trough the world (11th September, USA). Very late in the evening I heard the first news that Zanardi is alive. It was so poor from the ARD to stop it. God bless Zanardi, a good guy and brave in his destiny.

  • No I was referring to the meaning of his name, not his intentions as a driver. You said that the meaning of his name was ironic, I was making a comment on that.

  • The name of the drive that hit Alex Zanardi was Alex Tagliani. Tagliani in italian means "cutting"! Puts an new meaning in ironic!

  • It puts a new meaning to the term ironic because that's not what ironic means. If Tagliani meant 'to never crash' or 'near miss' then that would be a display of irony and, therefore, ironic.

  • You think that Tagliani meant to hit Zanardi?

  • i dont think anyone could be that heartless

  • I didn't mean to be heartless, what i said is what Zanardi joked about on David Letterman show! He said that his son asked him if Alex Tagliani meant to cut his legs because his name was Tagliani, he of course told his son the truth! You should see that interview, i mean, Alex Zanardi is one of my heroes, he was able to make jokes about not having his legs and be so optimistic about life. People might learn a thing or two from Zanardi's example!

You should check that interview, is fantastic!

  • At some point in the interview Zanardi said that the germans pumped so much german blood in him that he should have a german passport! I laughed my ass out when i saw it! The optimism in the man is just staggering!

    You gotta love Zanardi!

  • yeah man NOTHING!!! can bring zanardi down lol thats what i love about him he's definetley one of the best

  • YEAP...

    ZANARDI, ONE OF THE BEST!

  • @brav0wing hahahahha did he really say that? when i saw his accident in one of the documentaries on natgeo, i could tell he's such a positive and optimistic man. respect for him!

  • @brav0wing Well said!

  • @brav0wing he also joked about tagliani's name in italian meaning cutting

  • @brav0wing He truely is amazing the way he has not let this horrifc accident stop him from achieving anything he has set out to do the fact he has gone on to win races in the world touring car and is preparing to try and win a medal at the London 2012 paraolympics many people would have sat and mourned to loss of their legs I have the most amount of respect for him in awe of him really

  • An electronics store by my house actually has one of his old indy cars new tires and everythin they even let me sit in it! I was so honored to sit in car that this man sat in.

  • as is saw it in tv i thought they only will find peaces of him but good thankx is is still alvie

  • 0:08 something is moving, maybe can be his leg

  • 0:27 if you look you can see some of his legs that has been split off in the top left hand side... horrible site.

  • it's pieces of flesh and bone

  • His legs weren't split off but damaged beyond repair.

  • i remember seeing this live.. wat a fookin shame. and it shows the courage of this man to come back and still be competative.. an amazing man

  • fuck man that's sad.

  • It was one of the most horrific things I have ever seen on automobilism. Zanardi is a true hero and an outstanding human being!

  • omg looks like chunks of flesh above tire on the left side of the screen in 0:26

  • thats parts of Zanadi's legs, so yes its flesh.

He lost both legs below the thigh in this crash.

  • Comment removed

  • Would anyone be able too tell me how he can still drive WTCC?

  • He has a prosthetic leg that he can use to break and has hand controls for acceleration i think

  • yes, thats right.

  • Yes, fordrule888, i can tell u. I saw him at a WTCC race at Hockenheim. I was standing near to the park fermé, so i got a look of his car. The Steeringweel of the BMW 320 was modified especially for him: With most of the driving functions in a video game style handset on the steering wheel, Zanardi's BMW will have its accelerator and clutch attached to the steering wheel. The additional hand controls make it possible for Zanardi to drive without legs. Fantastic Driver!

  • He lost his legs from above the knees and lost a massive amount of blood. But he survivied and continued racing with prostetic legs. He even drove a specially designed F1 car in testing.

  • I think I've seen something quite horrible. What is the red stuff on top of the right front tyre. I'm hoping your reply is part of his car...

  • sadly it is not... appears to be flesh. so horrible...

  • omg.... at 0:26 look at the left hand side you see like part of his leg!!!!!

  • this was a very bad crash...Zanardi lost his legs...the other Car is crashed to him with 200 mph (ca. 320 km/h) firstly everyone thought he is dead but he had "only" lost his legs

  • Very unlucky driver

  • Think before you reply.

  • So noone died as a result of this crash? If that is true it was a miracle.

  • one of the most sad moment of my life, i thought my idol was died, but fortunatly a miracle bring him back to life!!!

    ALEX ZANARDI FOREVER

  • on bbc four eh

  • alex zanardi did crash

  • Zanardi has hurt himself and he lost his legs he crashed at 2001 when he was taken to hospital

  • Err he kinda lost his legs from the crash?

  • Your comment is so stupid dude...

  • 00:10 ouch...
