I was a CART official at Rockingham a week later and the whole paddock was in shock. During one of the rain delays we had a briefing on what happened and the rescue by Dr Steve Olvey and Simple Green Safety Team. I spoke to Tags during the Friday rain out and he was distraught so much so I had to call Dr Terry Trammell over to help him. Tags was glad that there was someone to talk to who was in CART but not a full time member. That month was a hard month for CART
He is one of the most blessed human beings Ive ever heard of. Floundering in Formula One in uncompetitive cars in the 90's. Nearly killed at Spa during practice for the GP. Came to the USA won the Indycar Championship convincingly. Went back to F1 but again didnt go anywhere except back to Indycar and then this! In an accident which absolutely should have killed him. Heart of a Lion.
@MilibandDavid why? It was an accident. Alex spun off of the exit road and onto the track in front of Patrick. Pat is going nearly 200mph, you can't simply react that fast mid corner.
How can anybody make a joke from this ! I genuinely had nothing but tears in my eyes & hands over my mouth when I saw this & if you Fuckers who make jokes really do find this funny then you need help BIG HELP as anybody who at least as any ounce of decency in them would contemplate on how lucky they really are in life ! & For me personally it actually makes me want to stop taking my body for granted by abusing it & actually do something with my life ! Although unlike him I probably never will.
00:08 you can actually see blood running down the track, cant believe he would still be conscious and moving what was left of his legs then. The guy is made of steel
Alex needed to be reanimated seven (!) times. When you look at sheer statistics, the chances of a successful reanimation are in the region of 10 to 20 percent. If you want to know how much luck one needs to finally stay alive after all this, do the math.
00:08 is he actually moving what is left of his leg? damn!!! i thought he fainted immediately. was he conscious? and you can even see pieces of his leg at the end of the video jeez...
but he's a tough one, he went back to life the way no one would imagine. hero.
There's nothing else in a champ car "Squishy" enough to look like that during a crash. You're probably looking at the remants of the fat and musculature of his legs.
Zanardi is a great guy with a great attitude towards life. I've never seen this angle before and I'm glad it wasn't zoomed in any farther, there's already some things showing that is very "real"
I'm so sorry for Zanardi cos he's crashed and we know the consequences. But i'm so glad that he still lived for that matter! Even been racing after that hideous crash too! Respect!
well that was a big one check the speed difference his car just accelerate like hell.. i am not sure in F1 car in this situation have better chances , but agree F1 cars are safer!
@glogmulch34 Nonsence. It's just impossible to constuct a car stable enough for such a situation. They were driving at about 350 km/h; there you cut though everything like it's butter.
This was really horror. I remember seeing this crash live on german tv. Just a minute after the crash the tv-station (ARD) stopped the whole coverage because of the horror that went trough the world (11th September, USA). Very late in the evening I heard the first news that Zanardi is alive. It was so poor from the ARD to stop it. God bless Zanardi, a good guy and brave in his destiny.
No I was referring to the meaning of his name, not his intentions as a driver. You said that the meaning of his name was ironic, I was making a comment on that.
It puts a new meaning to the term ironic because that's not what ironic means. If Tagliani meant 'to never crash' or 'near miss' then that would be a display of irony and, therefore, ironic.
I didn't mean to be heartless, what i said is what Zanardi joked about on David Letterman show! He said that his son asked him if Alex Tagliani meant to cut his legs because his name was Tagliani, he of course told his son the truth! You should see that interview, i mean, Alex Zanardi is one of my heroes, he was able to make jokes about not having his legs and be so optimistic about life. People might learn a thing or two from Zanardi's example!
At some point in the interview Zanardi said that the germans pumped so much german blood in him that he should have a german passport! I laughed my ass out when i saw it! The optimism in the man is just staggering!
@brav0wing hahahahha did he really say that? when i saw his accident in one of the documentaries on natgeo, i could tell he's such a positive and optimistic man. respect for him!
@brav0wing He truely is amazing the way he has not let this horrifc accident stop him from achieving anything he has set out to do the fact he has gone on to win races in the world touring car and is preparing to try and win a medal at the London 2012 paraolympics many people would have sat and mourned to loss of their legs I have the most amount of respect for him in awe of him really
An electronics store by my house actually has one of his old indy cars new tires and everythin they even let me sit in it! I was so honored to sit in car that this man sat in.
But what really has given me shivers on my spine was at 0:08 when he flits his exposed fleshless left femur. That's far beyond the concept of excruciating pain
Yes, fordrule888, i can tell u. I saw him at a WTCC race at Hockenheim. I was standing near to the park fermé, so i got a look of his car. The Steeringweel of the BMW 320 was modified especially for him: With most of the driving functions in a video game style handset on the steering wheel, Zanardi's BMW will have its accelerator and clutch attached to the steering wheel. The additional hand controls make it possible for Zanardi to drive without legs. Fantastic Driver!
He lost his legs from above the knees and lost a massive amount of blood. But he survivied and continued racing with prostetic legs. He even drove a specially designed F1 car in testing.
this was a very bad crash...Zanardi lost his legs...the other Car is crashed to him with 200 mph (ca. 320 km/h) firstly everyone thought he is dead but he had "only" lost his legs
I would never go to that hospital then. What kind of hospital is that where you go in with two healthy legs and when you come out you don't have them anymore!?!?!?
