The new audio standard is MPEG-4 audio layer, with file extension .m4a Does WMP-11 support this?

For example, iTunes now uses the .m4a MPEG-4 audio exclusively. *Not* mp4's. And .m4a's are said to be smaller. They are the new lossless format, and are also said to sound better. So why is Microsoft going the mp4 route?!

I converted an mp4 video from my sony erricson phone in to MPEG which is now compatible with windows media player. This proved to be a waste of time; in centre there is giant water mark logo which will only go if I spend $30 on a fully activated version GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!

@sekwah09 just dont convert it to mpeg. once you install this, you can play mp4 in media player.  Or use a proram called "Super"

You should try VLC Media Player. The audio output is much clearer than Windows media player. It also has a louder sound. If You combine this with the Mozilla Firefox' web browser add-on "1 Click Youtube Video Downloader" you can then download your favourite Youtube vids and watch them whenever you like with great sound output. In my personal opinion VLC is an overall better media player for watching videos, films etc.

To install the Basic Package I had to remove the Windows Essentials Codec Pack, which I had originally installed to get WMP to play AVI files. Those AVI files are still working okay in WMP.

it nearly worked, when i try to play an MP4 movie (i bought it off itunes) in media player 11, it starts playing but the screen is black with no audio but the little bar down the bottom says its playing. Does apples DRM protection affect the codec????

Well I have the same problem although its an M4A and M4P files that i cant seem to play. I use Quicktime to play the files but you could us your MP4 file with iTunes or Quicktime aswell hope that advice should help you :]
